News over Networks with Limited Bandwidth

  Another problem arising with the Usenet's steady growth is the provision of a full news feed to a news server being connected by a low bandwidth link (e.g., a modem line or ISDN). The required bandwidth for a full news feed currently is about $400\mbox{KBit}/\mbox{s}$% latex2html id marker 4065
\setcounter{footnote}{2}\fnsymbol{footnote} for 24 hours a day. This requirement makes it impossible to provide news to a large number of people over a low bandwidth network. A cache server has to be used in this situation to reduce the network traffic caused by repeatedly requested articles. This setup is shown in figure 3.5.
