After seeing all those crashed cars in the PRO division, I was too scared to drive with damage on in the CHAMP division. I just refused to jump into my car. Better a coward and alive than a dead hero ;-) Here is my Indianapolis PRO division result file (no season file, as allowed by ICRS-Indianapolis rules addendum point 3; FYI, the most laps lead point would have gone to Tracy, more than 100 laps leading...) ------------- PRO division result file -------------------------- Indianapolis Motor Speedway Speedway, IN 200 Laps Temp: 72øF Wind: NO WIND NO RAIN Indianapolis Final Standings (200 Laps) 1. 3 * Paul Tracy Penske94/Ilmor D 197.877mph 2. 0 Herbert Pohlai Penske94/Menard -0.9 3. 1 Nigel Mansell Lola T9400/Cosworth XB -30.9 4. 17 Dominic Dobson Lola T9400/Cosworth XB -34.1 5. 88 Mauricio Gugelmin Reynard94/Cosworth XB -2L 6. 10 Mike Groff Lola T9400/Honda V8 -5L 7. 8 Michael Andretti Reynard94/Cosworth XB Crashed 8. 2 Emerson Fittipaldi Penske94/Ilmor D Crashed 9. 6 Mario Andretti Lola T9400/Cosworth XB Crashed 10. 15 Mark Smith Lola T9400/Cosworth XB Crashed 11. 9 Robby Gordon Lola T9400/Cosworth XB Electrical 12. 16 Stefan Johansson Penske93/Ilmor D Engine 13. 4 Bobby Rahal Lola T9400/Honda V8 Crashed 14. 31 Al Unser, Jr. Penske94/Ilmor D Crashed 15. 5 Raul Boesel Lola T9400/Cosworth XB Crashed 16. 71 Scott Sharp Lola T9400/Cosworth XB Crashed * = Polesitter Herbert Pohlai Best Lap: 0:00.465 mph ------------- PRO division result file end----------------------- The best-lap-bug strikes again :-( I remember a 222.3xx lap, but maybe there was a faster one, that I didn't see... The story: At the start I was very careful and reduced my boost setting to 5. After some laps, my tires warmed up to operating temperature and I started to pass other cars after I switched to full boost. I was somewhere around 10th after 25 laps. I tried to pass Scott Sharp, but got onto the grass. I lost control and hit him. Raul Boesel crashed into my car, too. First pitstop under yellow. Could catch the pack before green. When everybody else stopped to get fuel (around lap 30) I took the lead. After realizing the bad AI, I provoked the crash with Al Unser, Jr. when it was time for the second stop. OOPS-officially I would say: Well, he was close behind me when I approached turn 4. I checked my fuel gauge and when I looked into the mirror again he was gone... I assumed that he tried to pass me on the outside. But when I pulled to the inside - there he was. Sorry, Al. Bobby Rahal was in the pits at the same time and hit me into the rear on the warmup lane (he was much too fast for the warmup lane!). Another point lost, but after all i had a comfortable lead (due to the pitstops of my opponents - almost all missed the yellow phase and stopped under green... :-). At the next 3 pitstops nothing special happened - ok, I lost 10-15 seconds each :-( I was 5th, but soon after my pitstop in lap 157 (where I decided to take 25 gal. only), I accidentially rammed Mark Smith. When green came out again, Mario had a much better acceleration and bumped into me. Fittipaldi hit my spinning car, too. Now I realized, that after this yellow phase there would be less than 38 laps remaining. So I stopped and got a full load, knowing that I would have to be careful with the boost setting to make it to the finish line. When I accelerated onto the back stretch, I came into the rough with my right rear, lost control and hit Michael Andretti. After the yellow phase, I had 39 gallons for 34 laps. I started out with boost 7 and stayed behind Gugelmin for a while, in the 4th position. When the fuel gauge said ok, I switched back to full boost, but Tracy had already built up a 20 second lead, and when I managed to pass Gugelmin, he was 30 seconds away. Mansell and Dobson refueled and I was second. 8 laps to go - I know: Tracy will have to stop too! How long will it take? 5 laps: I pass through turn 2 and there he is, leaving the warmup lane. I'm 2 seconds behind. Due to his cold tires, I can reduce the gap to 0.6 seconds, 2 laps remaining. But now he gets faster and faster and increases his lead to 0.9 seconds on the finish line. Obviously, there is no way to pass a 102 percent opponent driving a Penske94/Ilmor D on the track... Crash analysis (8 cars crashed): Michael Andretti stupid warmup lane rule, exiting between turn 1 and turn 2 would have been no problem :-( Emerson Fittipaldi hit my spinning car, not really my fault Mario Andretti common acceleration problem *Mark Smith normal accident Bobby Rahal stupid warmup lane rule :-( *Al Unser, Jr. avoidable 'accident' Raul Boesel hit my spinnig car, not really my fault *Scott Sharp normal accident *...possibly my fault
