cross compilation fix #1: do not use AC_CHECK_FILE() to check for source
files. AC_CHECK_FILE() checks for any files in the host filesystem and is not
allowed for cross compilation. autoconf manual recommends using 'test -f' in
that case.
1: dnl Process this file with autoconf to produce a configure script.
