Difference between NNTP and NNRP

In the first implementations of Usenet News only the ``Network News Transfer Protocol'' (NNTP) was available. In later revisions, this protocol has been extended to allow a faster access to the news database for news readers. Many news server and reader implementations (such as INN, tin, ...) call these extensions the ``Network News Reader Protocol'' (NNRP). Before using one of the extensions the news reader should issue the mode reader command, because some news servers do not provide the new commands otherwise (e.g., INN).
