GEnie announces new protocols to go live, effective Monday, July 25th! In response to the many requests for newer protocols, GEnie has implemented both YModem Batch and XMODEM 1K for all download libraries! You will get a small menu from which you can select the download protocol after you tell GEnie you want to download. BEWARE! Some terminal programs *say* they support YModem, when in reality it is only XMODEM 1K. GEnie supports TRUE YModem, which requires that your terminal program also be able to support batch downloads. If for some reason you select YModem and your software balks, try XMODEM 1K, and see if that doesn't do the trick. Of course, do let us know what you find out, too! Software authors should be encouraged to label choices with the proper names. [Smile] Even many BBS systems make this same mistake, so do not always assume that just because it works on your local ACME BBS, you have YModem Batch! Tell us all about any abnormal results or mildly amusing anecdotes on the Bulletin Board! YModem batch will also support just a single file transfer, when you browse, or it will support multiple files, by selecting the #6 Library menu command, Download. If you want to test out batch, Browse first over the file descriptions, skipping over them. Select which ones you want to download, writing down the filenumbers. When you are ready, and have a disk with enough room in it (!), go back to the menu and choose #6, Download a File. At the prompt, you can specify the filenumbers you want, separated with a comma, and BINGO, YModem and GEnie and your software do all the rest of the work. YModem will call your files on disk the same thing we have them here in the library! [BEWARE some file names may not work on your machine, you will have to rename them after you sign off] If you are one of the few people that do not use half duplex on GEnie, but force an echo with a CTRL R when you login, you will find that using either of the new protocols will leave you typing blind when the transfer is finished. If your software doesn't support local echo and you are forced into this, take a minute to go over to your GEnie settings and make sure the new item, HOST ECHO, is set to ON. That should tell GEnie that when you come out of the transfer you need your echo back. This really doesn't apply to most of our RoundTable users, since reliable software supports local echo already. We applaud GEnie's response to the many requests! Hope you enjoy the increased speed and highly improved ease of use of the new protocols. YModem Batch has me spoiled rotten...! I truly cannot think of anything else you will need to know about using these protocols. Your FIG Sysops on GEnie
