Minutes of the FIGGY BAR RT Conference. Date: 12/22/88 Time: 22:37EST Items Discussed: Hand-held nuclear detection in Forth, new F-PC manuals, ROM/ROMmable Forths, Vesta, Inner Access, NMI, SC32 & RTX, linking to forthers world wide, ACM conference update Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL] [[Len] NMORGENSTERN] [[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS] [C.TING] [[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN] Minutes: is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> Are you REALLY from Los Alamos ? hi gary , I'm new at this so i'll be a little slow until i get the hang if it. Yes I am from ' the mesa of DOOM' as newsweek called it. <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> I don't like systems that shorten my name!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> I ask because I'm a native New Mexican living in Arkansas... <[Gary] GARY-S> my parents/brothers are still in Albuquerque <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> I went to school in Alb. at UNM. Where are you an ARkansaw? <[Gary] GARY-S> Little Rock <[Gary] GARY-S> I went to NMSU <[Gary] GARY-S> do you work at the lab is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> hey Len <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hi there <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> I work in the lab as a Physisist, but I do all of may programming in FORTH. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hello. <[Gary] GARY-S> well - where have you been ? This is the Forth place ! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> No it is el loco primero -- the first place! <[Gary] GARY-S> By the way - as folks show up here messages will start interlacing <[Gary] GARY-S> mil gracias <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> De nada <[Gary] GARY-S> so what do you do in forth, ken <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> I build nuclear detection instruments that are portable and battery operated. <[Gary] GARY-S> from scratch ? NMI 100 sq boards, what ? <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> We started with nmi 100 sq boards, and sometimes prototype with them, but we build our own circuit boards and have them printed in house. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> pmi (pardon my ignorance) what is nmi? <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> the processor we have used most is the m68HC11 with max forth in rom on board the chip <[Gary] GARY-S> Randy Dumse's New Micros Inc <[Gary] GARY-S> Forth - FIG, F83, 79 ? <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> Randy claims it is 83 standard but it is pretty close ti fig with conversions to 83 in places. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanks <[Gary] GARY-S> I meant your own forth in ROM <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> Sorry, I meant we use Randy's MAxA-FORTH which comes in ROM. <[Gary] GARY-S> thanks - it's a good package <[Gary] GARY-S> Jon Bryan uses it at Sandia also <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> I have talked to Jon I think, He wrote an accelerometer package I believe. <[Gary] GARY-S> you're right - do you have a chapter at los alamos ? <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> We don't have a chapter at LA. There is one in Albquerque, but I avoide the city whenever possible. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I have never used a ROMable Forth & have some questions. <[Gary] GARY-S> I asked because FIG has a new chapter coordinator in the name... <[Gary] GARY-S> of Jax (FIGCHAPTERS in e-mail) and we are trying... <[Gary] GARY-S> to get as many as possible in touch with Jax... <[Gary] GARY-S> via e-mail.. he and I are.. <[Gary] GARY-S> both reacable on Usenet.. <[Ken Butterfi] K.BUTTERFIEL> Len, ask away, Gary what is usenet? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I assume that a ROMable Forth... <[Gary] GARY-S> UUCP user network - it is tied into Internet (TCP/IP) (arpanet) that you have at LA <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> runs on a PC or whatever, and then metacompiles into... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> a small image that can be burned into ROM. <[Gary] GARY-S> You are the user here ken.. <[Gary] GARY-S> ga <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> MAX-FORTH is a full interpreter running in 4k of ROM. The way I use it is to compile into ram on top of the existing kernal. I soter variables in a separate region of memory that will remain ram in the final system. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> The whole package is compiled and I copy out the program section into a ROM at the same address that the Ram occupied. <[Gary] GARY-S> len ? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I see. Then it REALLY is a ROM based Forth... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> and not merely a Romable one. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Yes, in 4K complete with disk capability but no assembler, That takes another 4K and has to exist outside of the rom built into the chip. The smallest package I have built has one chip, the processor, a crystal a resitor 2 caps and a detector. I takes 20 ma or 6 ma if the pr ocessor is in a wait for interrupt state. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanks <[Gary] GARY-S> ken - let me suggest you break up your longer... <[Gary] GARY-S> messages into segments with the three dots... <[Gary] GARY-S> indicating more to come.. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Sounds good to me... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> You have answered my question... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> A related one is something that was asked... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> last Sunday... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Is there a Forth that will give small files on disk... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> What I mean is, like a Romable, but on disk rather than in ROM.... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I hope that's clear. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> There used to be a FORTH for the PET (comodore)... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> That could save words above FENCE and reload back to the same address... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Is this any help ga <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I have MicroMotion (Martin Tracy's commercial product)... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> that has overlays. ... <[Gary] GARY-S> Len, Vesta has a Forth that will do exactly as you ask.. <[Gary] GARY-S> if I understand jax correctly and.. <[Gary] GARY-S> so does feierbach at Inner Access. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> That's not quite. Thanks. I will mention those to the person who asked. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Overlays can be small, but the Forth that uses them... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> is not necessarily so. <[Gary] GARY-S> Both those houses specialize in several varieties of Controller boards.. <[Gary] GARY-S> with ROM Forth AND ROMable Forth.. <[Gary] GARY-S> to your specs. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanks again. <[Gary] GARY-S> Ken - if you need to /want to reach me via arpa my address is well!gars@lll-crg.arpa <[Gary] GARY-S> Usenet addresses are gars@well.UUCP or gars@wet.UUCP <[Gary] GARY-S> we are trying to link to as many forthers as possible <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I don't know my arpanet address, but i will try to ... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> get it. I don't use the large LA computers much... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I don't trust a computer I can't cary! ga <[Gary] GARY-S> I heard that and those Mainframes are heavy ! <[Gary] GARY-S> anyway please pass the word if it occurrs to you and opportunity presents itself.. <[Gary] GARY-S> with my appreciation. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> We're getting into a Cray Area here. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I will do that.. By the way Semore Cray hand delivered the 1st machine... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> but he needed a flatbed semi. ga <[Gary] GARY-S> I was at CDC when Seymore said the 7600 was his last little/slow machine... is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> he wasn't just kidding ! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hi Jax <[Gary] GARY-S> Jax - ken at Los Alamos is going to e-mail me on arpa - I will pass thye address on to you <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Hi len.... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Ken, are you a member of a FIG Chapter? <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Not a local chapter just the national. ga <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Hmmm I have compiled a list ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> of FIG Chapters that I can reach by email. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> I tried it out last week ......... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> and it worked fine . <[Gary] GARY-S> Did you mail me ? <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Do you want to be on the Chapter mailing list? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> How does one reach it, Jax? <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Len, I have three lists: <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> It may be that the best way to reach me will be on GENIE. <[Gary] GARY-S> Why do you think I sent all those addresses to you ? <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> 1) net 2) GEnie 3) xCFB <[Gary] GARY-S> I'm chapter coordinator in CAFIG ! <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> If I want *you* Gary, I know where to find you! <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Ok, gar, you are on, I'll mail you here on GEnie. <[Gary] GARY-S> That doesn't mean I don't want the mailings is here. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hi Ting! <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> The good Forth Doctor! hi len <[Gary] GARY-S> Well hello Dr. Ting ! <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Hi Ting, ken butterfield here, I met you at FORMAL. <[Gary] GARY-S> Your conference has been accessed quite a bit - so thanks again <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Dr. Ting, perhaps you can answer a question hi, ken. I was trying to split my window so I can see what's goining on. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> use a baseball.. it worked when i was a kid. Jax, go ahead. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> The Christians have christmas @ the solstice, the romans had saturnalia @ soltice, the muslims jews and hindus observed solstice . .. is there a chinese Solstice festival? Jax. We wait for the Lunar New Year. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Thank you. <[Gary] GARY-S> This is open conversation - anyone can jump in <[Gary] GARY-S> try to stay on Forth Folks, I want to make an announcement.. <[Gary] GARY-S> ga <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Is'nt the Lunar new year harder to measure than the shortest day? F-PC is finally out. It is frozen at Version 2.25. I have the revised User's Manual and the Technical Reference manual for sale. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I downloaded f-pc last weekend. was that 2.25?? <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Is this now a commercial system, of is it still uploadable? <[Gary] GARY-S> Dr. Ting - post your address and prices Ken, we wanted to make it available. F-PC diskette set (4 disks) $25. <[Gary] GARY-S> Ken - you got 2.15 / 2.25 will be on GEnie later F-PC User's Manual, 2nd Edition $20. F-PC Technical Referrence Manual, $30. is here. Order from Offete Enterprises, 1036 South B Street, San Mateo, CA 94402... Tel (415) 574-8250 <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Hullo y'all ga <[Gary] GARY-S> hey Dave <[Gary] GARY-S> how goes ACM Tom Zimmer promised not to change it. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Hey. Goin' ok. Looks like I have become the Austin social planning director for the conf. :-) <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Has Dr. Nichols shown the proto-board for the SC32? I called Silicon COmposers the other day and nobody answered the phone! <[Gary] GARY-S> ga ting SC32 is not ready for sale yet. They will have to build more chips. It is not clear who will build it for them. <[Gary] GARY-S> Jax - a question came up earlier about ROM Forth vis-a-vie ROMmable Forth. Did I err when I said Vesta deals with both ? <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Our Forths are all Rommed and all Rommable. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Though of course we can metacompile on the PC for our 80x88 boards. <[Gary] GARY-S> Len care to explore ? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> No, that is the information I need. Thanks <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Metacompile on Amiga for our 68008 boar. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> (board). <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> . <[Gary] GARY-S> any one ! Jax, will you send me information on your ROM Forth, please. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Sure thing! <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> I have Offete press address, ok? Thanks. I am working on an 80188 board, which can use a good Forth in ROM. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> We have an 80188 with ROM forth ourselves. Jax, Offete's address is fine. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Is this a product, or are you just making this for yourself? <[Gary] GARY-S> Ken - you may be interested to know Randy Dumse will be a conference speaker here on February 9 Jax, this is a job at Maxtor. but I don't think Maxtor will pay for it. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Aha! Well, our Forth is derived from L&P, with extensions, some kinda neat. I converted the F83 meta compiler to compile 8080 ROM Forth... It could be used to ROM 80188, but I am kind of lazy now. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> The thing about our Forth is that it presupposes ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> a rather IBM-like BIOS underneath, which we also wrote for our boards ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> our 68008 board will have ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> 32-bit standalone indirect-threaded Forth, no BIOS planned as yet. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Thanks Gary I am interested. Has anyone tried a Harris RTX yet? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Dan Miller has, but he's not here today. <[Gary] GARY-S> Any one here ? I know Dan Miller has, Ken. He can be e-mailed here as DANMILLER <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Who will be coming to the ACM conference this February? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I probably <[Gary] GARY-S> I wish <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Come on gary...you live in Little Rock, its not that far. <[Foxy Loxy] FIGCHAPTERS> Not I! <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I burned my travel time at FORMAL and the forth conference <[Gary] GARY-S> I am the only field engineer for 600 miles in any direction, though <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Do you get new travel time at the beginning of the year, or the fiscal year? <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I get it when I can talk my way into it, but I used all my chips. <[Gary] GARY-S> I think that's to you ken <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Ahhhh. Oh well. <[Gary] GARY-S> it's witching hour - last shots anyone ? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Can the ear detect the difference between the sound <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> of one hand clapping and the sound of no hand clapping? and a RTX cmForth... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> Enjoyed It KB <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanks for a good conference, Gary. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> What about RTX cmForth? <[Gary] GARY-S> e-mail me ken <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Come on down to Austin. Remember, the air is clear, the grass is green, and the music is astounding. <[Gary] GARY-S> thanks len <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> has left. <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I'll try to Gary. Jax, there is a cmForth for RTX. Anyone interested? <[Gary] GARY-S> g'nite folks and thank you all very much <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Interested, yes. I have a Novix ... <[Ken] K.BUTTERFIEL> I am very interested in an cmFORTH for rtx <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> <- could use any sort of Forth chip, but can't afford even the old ones, much less a new one. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> and am going to RTX Seminar in Denver in Jan. Mr. Bladh in Sweden sent me the cross compiler from NC to RTX. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> To publish? It will appear on the next issue of 'More on NC4000' next January. <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> INtriguing! <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> I have an order out for Fast ROMs ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> so that I can upgrade from the original cmForth ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> to the later version. ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> are there an;y particularly tricky parts ... <[Jax] FIGCHAPTERS> in compiling the latter from the earlier? === End of Steno notes. ===
