Sub: Minutes of FIGGY BAR RT Conference. Date: 12/20/90 Time: 22:26EST Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[Len] NMORGENSTERN] [[Wil] W.BADEN1] [JAX] Items discussed include forthcoming conference guests Kelly, Haydon and Martens, and Sanderson, and potential future guests, SUN SPARC's Forth bootrom, adding workstations to a SUN cluster, Zen Forth, EDITORS !, Forth Dimensions, JFAR. Minutes: is here. Just we two. It's a little early. <[Gary] GARY-S> Guess you saw I followed up on some of your guest suggestions Yes. I think Guy Kelly will be excellent! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> is here. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Sorry I missed last week -- User Group Board meeting. <[Gary] GARY-S> I'm looking forward to all three guest meetings <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Yes, so am I. <[Gary] GARY-S> We already know Glen Haydon calls them like he sees them <[Gary] GARY-S> Guy and Dean should both provide some perspectives we have not seen Wil, was there anyone else at Asiomar that you think would make a good conference guest? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Several, but let me sleep on it. <[Gary] GARY-S> Think I will try to get Charlie Johnsen for the one right after MVP. There is room to look at chip offerings in light of Harris' decisions <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Richard Haskell gave three outstanding presentations: Teaching Forth in a Required Course; <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Implementing E-Forth, <[Wil] W.BADEN1> and a program to bet on horse races. Idea: Frank Sargent won the Harris contest. You could sound him out about a conference on that, but, from talking to him, my guess is that he wouldn't. BUT maybe some of the others might. <[Gary] GARY-S> Do either of you have a number for Dr. haskell - all I know is U/Mich, Rochester Oakland College, Rochester, Michigan. <[Gary] GARY-S> I've had Frank - and I sort of hesitate to repeat on guests I agree, anyway not quite so soon. <[Gary] GARY-S> I would REALLY like to have a few more lady guests Did they announce a runner-up to the Harris contest? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Didn't Rob Chapman win (also?) ? The only women I know in Forth are Eliz. Rather and Terry Sutton. don't know if Terry is still programming Forth. <[Gary] GARY-S> Wait till you see the note I post tomorrow from Koopman (Also Mrs. Miller--I don't remember her first name. <[Gary] GARY-S> She declined to participate when Dick was a guest <[Wil] W.BADEN1> (And Linda Web.) <[Gary] GARY-S> Linda Web ? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> (An in joke.) <[Gary] GARY-S> Expand a bit <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Robert LaQuey has some extraordinary ideas and loves to expound on them. Yes, very vocal! <[Gary] GARY-S> Phone numbers ????? (The joke is that Linda Web is one of Wil's pseudonyms when he is in a joking mood) <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Try FIG office? My Asilomar proceedings are in the back room. <[Gary] GARY-S> I thought there was also a Lori Chavez associated with Palo Alto Shipping Has Mitch Bradley been a conference guest? Every Sun SPARC has an embedded Forth. An installed base of 200000!!!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> Yes Mitch has and has also declined a repeat <[Gary] GARY-S> His topic was Forth and Unix Yes, I remember now. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> We added 10 new workstations on the week-end and the installation had us ... <[Gary] GARY-S> I have even had Linda Web it seems <[Wil] W.BADEN1> go into "new command mode" to get the prom version number. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Of course, Forth wasn't mentioned. <[Gary] GARY-S> How easy is it to communicate with the SPARC bootrom Forth ? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Very easy if you want to do it ... is here. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> but you don't want to do so. Why not, Wil? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's really just for bringing up the system and debugging. But couldn't it be used in a "regular" way> <[Wil] W.BADEN1> FunctionKey 1 and A gives you the prompt <[Gary] GARY-S> Mitch claims it's a full kernel sans mass storage <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Enter b for boot, c to continue, n for new command mode. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> To get out type go. <[Gary] GARY-S> 'go' not 'bye' interesting <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's very extensive. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> 'go' goes back to UNIX. <[Gary] GARY-S> Mitch also advises they are teaching a Forth cram class to a LOT of folk <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Good!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> It will also be in tomorrow's Usenet port <[Wil] W.BADEN1> There is mass storage. You can clobber anything. <[Gary] GARY-S> That's a lousey plan - especially with Unix <[Wil] W.BADEN1> That's why I said that you don't want to get into the boot Forth. <[Gary] GARY-S> Think I'd develop a tic knowing the Forth was there yet untouchable <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Think of it as universal hardware controller. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It doesn't matter what CPU or peripherals you have; the boot prom can handle them all. <[Gary] GARY-S> I presume it has some tables and mask bits ? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> huh? <[Gary] GARY-S> I presume the periphs are controlled in part with tables and masking <[Wil] W.BADEN1> The Forth is tokenized so that it's the same on all platforms. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I don't know the details, but presume it's done by issuing appropriate Forth words with symbolic names for the devices. <[Gary] GARY-S> Back to the add-ons. How smoothly did the 10 worksations add in ? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> We took the week-end to do it, and the users were using it Monday. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Some path's had to be re-defined. <[Gary] GARY-S> That's pretty smooth - networks can be a bitch <[Wil] W.BADEN1> rc.local, fstab, and one other had to be touched up on monday. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> When I want something done right, I ask someone else to do it. :-) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> The trick is to ask the right person! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> (We hired a consultant for the week-end.) <[Gary] GARY-S> I doubt that <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Precisely! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> This week is very strange -- I've had two Monday's and one Friday already. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I'm not going to learn vi; a screen editor is fine for creating programs, but ... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> for editing existing files, I will use ed and sed. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> pmi, what's vi? arf arf arf <[Gary] GARY-S> I frankly don't know how you can use Unix without vi or emacs Why did Forth never realize full potential of EDITOR vocab? <[Gary] GARY-S> full screen Unix editor - one of Bill Joy's gifts talk about a "programmable macro language" ... woof! Nothing like F R X U O etc. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Sun work stations have WIMP text editors. <[Gary] GARY-S> They ALL have ed, ex and vi Wil, you wrote what to my (limited) knowledge is the best Forth screen editor ever. Has anyone surpassed it yet? Are you ever going to release t he update you were working on? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I have no plans at present. (Thanks for the kind words.) Are you ever going to let anyone look at your update? <<< still uses the Congenial Editor! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's essentially the version in Zen 1.1. will have to check that out ... I don't examine the DOS software as well as I should. BTW has anyone gotten a FORTH Dimensions in the last three months? . <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I have, regularly <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I got one today. aha, maybe mine will come soon. widdle bit late, huh? <[Gary] GARY-S> My last was Vol. XII No. 4 When 4D comes late I'm always afraid FIG finally went broke and no one told us! :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> Shades of JFAR ? That's different. He *never* kept a publishing schedule! :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> Didn't keep me as a subscriber, either (( Larry must be doing ok, IFAR picked up FVG tab for several outstanding outstanding sumes). s.b., "sums" <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> FVG? <[Gary] GARY-S> Forth vendor Group <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanx <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> (Have to leave a little early. Thanks all ) just checked RCFB for Zen 1.1 ... is that the same as ZEN1_10.ZIP ? <[Gary] GARY-S> jax - how bout porting the 8051 eForth to GEnie ? don't you have it yet? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's the version Jack Brown uploaded. <[Gary] GARY-S> hmm - stupid me I'm working on porting eForth to 80196! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Two disks. I'll chekkit out, Wil. <[Gary] GARY-S> It never occurred to me - sorry. I've got a few other things occupying the few living brain cells I have <[Wil] W.BADEN1> No Jax. 1.1 is not 1.10. <[Gary] GARY-S> It's getting near the witching hour - any killer closures ? aha ... so 1.1 is a more recent cut? or older? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Older. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's my extensions to 1.0. SBC916 with Vesta Forth-83i96 RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> It's the Forth I've used since 1986. Ok, I'll have to make sure RCFB is equipped with it. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> on PC. aha <[Wil] W.BADEN1> ECFB does(did) have it. I may have it somewhere! <[Gary] GARY-S> Grapevine and GEnie do now I have a LOT of ZENxxx.xxx entries. will have to examine more closely. === End of Steno notes. ===
