Date: 12/06/90 Time: 22:24EST Attendees: [GARY-S] [[Dennis] D.RUFFER] [[Wil] W.BADEN1] [[Fred] F.SCHIFF] [[Robert] R.BERKEY] [JAX] Items discussed include Apple Conference, Harris & RTX, Silicon Composers & SC32 (APL32), debugging, 83i96, Forth workstation, Amiga 3000, 68008, Bill Muench, eForth, POSTPONE vs [COMPILE] Minutes: Hi Dennis - any thing shakin'? I'm only fighting bugs these days :-( \flu or computer ? computer of course! I fighting the PC's serial port interrupts (again) int 15 is a little known problem child little known, I've been fighting the thing for years Next week is Bill Muench - I do hope a few show for him do we hav a front door for it that I should be watching for? I will set 5 this week-end not that front door, GEnie's? yes I set it a month ago ok, I'll watch for it. Set to go off this weekend? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> is here. are you going down to the Apple conf. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> No. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I draw the line at that. I was thinking of doing something for them this year SURPRISE !! 0-* why, is it just a bunch of nerds (like us)? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> What, Dennis? There will be a GEnie booth of some sort <[Wil] W.BADEN1> You are the fifth person today to ask me if I was going. hum, maybe you SHOULD go See if you can't pry some of them off the Minitel clones what clones??? Minitel ah those :-) <[Wil] W.BADEN1> One person left a message at 9 am saying that since I wasn't in the office, he woud meet me at the conference. Like Prodigy and (Wil - what's the Apple heavy one ?) well then wil, it's settled...You're going! <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Americal Online. right yes, there will be a bunch of them down there too <[Wil] W.BADEN1> No, I have *real work* to do. too bad, I'm not sure quite yet either, sort of out of my league (if you know what I mean :-) is here. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> hiya Fred is here. <[Fred] F.SCHIFF> Lo <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> hiya Robert <[Fred] F.SCHIFF> What are we talking about? <[Robert] R.BERKEY> hiya <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Hi Robert. Wow - you're earlier than normal, Robert <[Robert] R.BERKEY> hehe, less than half an hour late. :) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> not much of anything yet Fred is here. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> well, we could talk about Fred, now that he's left. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> it is fun to make it home by 6:30 out here ya know :-) No chess tonite Jax ? No, got home too late <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> too late for what jax? Howdy Oll Too late to drive back all the way to the Chess club. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ah, they'll miss ya Not really, I kick butt too much. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> somehow, that doesn't surprise me :-) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> wil, what kind of people are down at that apple conf? Any Forthers? <[Wil] W.BADEN1> The Mac is a religion, like Forth, but Forth is not popular. <<< debugging in another window, don't be surprised if DISCONNECT <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> so what do they talk about then (if not Forth) :-) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> jack, I've got some files I need you to check for us also call waiting ? <[Fred] F.SCHIFF> I'm back (had to check out Elfquest) <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Very few Mac programmers, very high percentange of women members compared with other computer groups. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Elfquest??? <[Fred] F.SCHIFF> comics books, never mind...its another reality <[Wil] W.BADEN1> But it's mostly the men who go to the conventions. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> well, I can certainly understand (it WAS a comic book after all :-) Speaking of Forth - does anyone know what Larry (Forsley) is planning ? he mentioned something about the RTX kill by Harris not being the last dance <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I had 20 people out of 100 at my last meeting say they were going to SanFrancisco fo Mac Expo in Januar. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> what? another kill is going to happen gary? No - I gathered he plans to try to do something with the chip This is ALL rumor <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ah, now that WOULD be nice Actually, Harris' decision may be a boon to George Nicol <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> but, I'm not convinced we even need the RTX, we did ok before it (or any of the Forth chips came on the picture) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> George should do really well If you wanted a stovebolt chip with Forth on board there's still the super-8 <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> or at least better, does anyone know if he is making money on the SC32 yet? The last ads I saw were promoting the SBC32, not the SC32 <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yes, there are MANY ways to skin the cat, chuck's chips (and there ofsprings) are not absolutely neccessary <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> what is the SBC32 then? the single board add-in based on the SC32 as the engine <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ok, that is what I though it might be What's the word from FInc? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> fighting bugs converting an application right now jack Me too! Just finishing up the first rev of Forth-83i96. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> we might just be firing up that project too I sqoze a 96-k Forth into a 64-k mem model. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Jax, tell me again, r u hot for Atari or Amiga? Today's computer column in LA Times had glowing rewiew of Video Toaster. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> but that's not my bug, I back to fighting the PC's serial port interrupts Amiga man. #*$&*#&$(*&(*#&$ 8250 ... :-) <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Thot so, that'z the one for Video Toaster. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yep, I agree completely :-) Right. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> hmmm, my current problem is not the interrupts, but the modem beyond them. Amiga geting good reviews. Byte says it's better than a Sun for the money. ( that's the 3000 ... jax hax a 1000) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> that con be even harder robert ( Son Ivan has a 500) ( one 2000 at work, another on the way). Amiga's biggest rap is from the computer media who insist on labeling it as a graphics toy It's a programmer's toy is what it is. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> LA Times sez Video Toaster for $1500 is every bit as good as $100,000 studio equipment. Has the Unix port been accepted ? How buggy ? Amiga UNIX is now available they say. How buggy? I dunno. is it Interactive's SysV R4 as reported Supposed to be. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> (Gotta go -- wife expecting important call. 10 and counting.) I dunno, I'm more interested in a Forth workstation, parallel proc. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> seeya later wil <[Wil] W.BADEN1> has left. May build one. Amiga as a Forth workstation ? expand a bit Got all these 68008's sitting around that we ain't gonna sell! Use Amiga as terminal to a multiproc forth workstation. If you can set up a chat it should be a gas <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> well, I've got to go and help my son cook (before he burns himself), see ya all later Well, maybe we'll build a new BBS that way! :-) bye Dennis bye call me . <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> as soon as something REAL happens jack :-) Why the shelf full of 68008's ? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> see ya all later..............................poof <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> has left. Robert - anything on your mind ? You've been mighty quiet Prototype. They run. We sell 68000's ... 68008 too slow. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> not particularly. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> just wondering where Forth is going, where X3.J14 is going, the usual. LA is the answer! Bill Muench will be our guest next Thursday if you guys want to cuss/discuss eForth <[Robert] R.BERKEY> Plastics is the answer. aha! is 8051 eforth pd, shareware, or foobar? <[Robert] R.BERKEY> He knows a lot about the hardware chips, besides being involved in eForth. he also is responsible for Steve Robert's latest Winnebiko the electronics, him and Bumgardner I would guess Jax - it is my understanding any eForth is pd... We need to get Ting to post some of the ports Robert - re: X3 J14, have you been following the latest exchanges in 10-2 and 10-35 ? <[Robert] R.BERKEY> I've been skimming them, yes. I wondered - I FIGURED THE STUFF ON POSTPONE WOULD ELICIT A RESPONSE FROM YOU sorry - didn't mean to shout <[Robert] R.BERKEY> I'm not sure what that would be. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> They've made [compile] less obsolete is all I've noticed. That pleases you - right ? <[Robert] R.BERKEY> That's fine with me. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> The problem is that POSTPONE has been claimed to be a substitute for both <[Robert] R.BERKEY> COMPILE and [COMPILE] . <[Robert] R.BERKEY> That's where I expected some comment from you reference to state smart <[Robert] R.BERKEY> As long as it's less than 100% compatible, then it's not a substitute. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> Interestingly, I've heard of a technique that allows COMPILE to be What is it that [compile] can do that you can't do with POSTPONE? <[Robert] R.BERKEY> implemented by native code compilers. There's going to be a lot of code the runs now, fail under X3 J14 without some serious prelude work <[Robert] R.BERKEY> jax, POSTPONE [COMPILE] is not the same as POSTPONE POSTPONE . <[Robert] R.BERKEY> Mitch makes the interesting comment that COMPILE, does everything that POSTPONE No, but [COMPILE] FOOBAR is pretty much the same as either FOOBAR or POSTPONE FOOBAR. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> does. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> The implementation for COMPILE is done with two passes, one to create threaded <[Robert] R.BERKEY> code, and then it's the threaded code that is translated to native code. gotta go play a game o' cards with the youngun's. jaxoff! has left. <[Robert] R.BERKEY> bye <[Robert] R.BERKEY> yep, there are many Forth-83 words that the committee no longer directly supports. Yeah - I know, too many well - it's time anyway, unless you had something to add <[Robert] R.BERKEY> no, I'll be seeing you. good nite === End of Steno notes. ===
