Minutes of the FIGGY BAR Date: 09/08/88 Time: 22:13EDT Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[Len] NMORGENSTERN] [[Still Jax] VESTA] Items discussed: Larry Forsley conf in Oct, is ForthNet a lost cause ?, BTREE in Forth, Possible Ting conf Minutes: is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> Evening Leonard <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hi <[Gary] GARY-S> Did you see the guest notice ? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Yes. Larry ought to be v. good. <[Gary] GARY-S> I think so - good subject, too ! is here. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Yes. Hi Jax <[Gary] GARY-S> hey jax <[Just Jax] VESTA> foobar! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Gary, I finished my BTREE! I am now pre-alpha... <[Gary] GARY-S> colon foobar, please <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> testing it. <[Just Jax] VESTA> Just the "hired help" around, eh? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> So far. <[Gary] GARY-S> That's super - is it F83 ? I'd like to test drive it <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Yes. <[Just Jax] VESTA> Is BTREE a BBS? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I never know whether you are kidding, Jax. <[Just Jax] VESTA> Well, the old FIG BBS was called something-TREE... <[Just Jax] VESTA> ..?? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I will send around copies when it gets a little... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> better polished & documented. <[Just Jax] VESTA> what is this btree? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Jax It was called the FigTree <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> ok <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> A B-Tree is a way of storing information on disks... <[Gary] GARY-S> Len - wanna define Btree and make sure you sepeerate the common misconception (binary) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> It has the advantage of minimum disk access.... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> BTrees and Binary trees are not the same.... <[Gary] GARY-S> very common misconception <[Gary] GARY-S> ga len <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I will try to find the little message I put up about it... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> a few months ago... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> A good reference is Wirth. Data Structures + Algorithms, etc. <[Just Jax] VESTA> what is the basic algo? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Category 2 topic1 message 20 <[Gary] GARY-S> That implies you modified it from Pascal or Modula 2 code ??? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> in a nutshell. <[Just Jax] VESTA> brb <[Just Jax] VESTA> has left. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Well, Wirth has it in Pascal, of course. I find it very hard to read... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> pascal code, but his theoretical explanation... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> is very clear. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> The tough part is deletion! <[Gary] GARY-S> his newest books are in modula 2 and the typesetting is atrocious !!! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> My edition is Pascal, not too bad, but!!!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> He didn't improve with age is all I gotta say is here. <[Still Jax] VESTA> All I get is a prompt again. <[Still Jax] VESTA> foo! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Gary, if some things were deleted, might they... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> be renumbered? <[Still Jax] VESTA> i thought of that. <[Gary] GARY-S> Len - will you please fetch and display your message for this ( ? ) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I will look for it. It's probably in an .ARC file somewhere... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> on my disks. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> brb <[Gary] GARY-S> Jax - Phil sounds interested in putting BIX in the ForthNet loop :-) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> has left. <[Gary] GARY-S> just gotta get permission from the head BIXen <[Still Jax] VESTA> anyway, looks like we will have a Denver Forth Board within a month. <[Gary] GARY-S> do you plan to link with xCFB's <[Still Jax] VESTA> Possibly/probably. the important thing is getting it up & running first. <[Still Jax] VESTA> (obviously). <[Gary] GARY-S> How cum no enthusiasm for the BIX thing ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> I think that that sort of thing will never work by hand. Has to be software. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Doesn't work out on the WELL. <[Still Jax] VESTA> TOo much work. <[Gary] GARY-S> I will be out of pocket for a few weeks... <[Gary] GARY-S> either you will have to be the porter.. <[Still Jax] VESTA> or it dies. <[Gary] GARY-S> or just cool it till I get back... <[Still Jax] VESTA> see ... that sort of delivery went out with the pony express. <[Gary] GARY-S> you are probably right, but we have to start some where ! RIGHT ! <[Still Jax] VESTA> The start is already there. The problem is linking up with UNIX & mainfames. <[Still Jax] VESTA> -CFB stands on its own legs. <[Still Jax] VESTA> The problem will not be solved until the ForthNet is on more sophisticated <[Gary] GARY-S> sort of - Don is still on the edge in Minneapolis <[Still Jax] VESTA> hardware. <[Gary] GARY-S> Got a proposal ? you were all for this a month ago <[Still Jax] VESTA> I am for the idea. I see the practical problems as currently insurmountable. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Enthusiasm differs from stupidity only in degree. <[Gary] GARY-S> you even pushed for it as is ! is here. <[Still Jax] VESTA> True, but it *doesn't work*. <[Still Jax] VESTA> I was for the effort ... <[Still Jax] VESTA> but let's get serious and make it really work. <[Still Jax] VESTA> We need software events to do the shlepping. <[Gary] GARY-S> I'm for that, but as I said I will be gone a while <[Still Jax] VESTA> I don't have time to do it ... let the darn computers do it! that's what they built them for. <[Still Jax] VESTA> We have to have a transfer event that does UUCP mail with the WELL to make it <[Still Jax] VESTA> work on the well. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I couldn't find my notice on BTREES. I will... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> upload it in a few days when I find it. <[Gary] GARY-S> How does Lee make his BitNet message box go for BitNet and FIG-L ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> BitNet is interconnective with UUCP. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I posted it Sept 12, '87. Is there a time factor? <[Still Jax] VESTA> we are discussing ForthNet and how to implement. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> (almost 1 year has pssed. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> That's passed! <[Gary] GARY-S> close enough <[Gary] GARY-S> One last comment on ForthNet for tonight .... <[Still Jax] VESTA> Anyway, if we can do an event on the -CFB net just to upload to a directory, that might be enough. <[Still Jax] VESTA> ( on the WELL, that is). <[Gary] GARY-S> GEnie is not UUCP connected, and since this idea was mine... <[Still Jax] VESTA> If we get into the FORTHNET on the Denver Board, I will try to do that. <[Gary] GARY-S> I sure don't want to be left standing at the station ! <[Still Jax] VESTA> Well, you promised more work than you can deliver, typical of programmers! <[Gary] GARY-S> onward and downward <[Still Jax] VESTA> whither? <[Gary] GARY-S> yon <[Gary] GARY-S> did you talk to C. H. T. ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> The question is not if ForthNet is dead ... it is quite busy. Is FIG dead? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Who? <[Still Jax] VESTA> TING .. no haven't had time. <[Gary] GARY-S> Ting <[Still Jax] VESTA> Maybe after I hang up here. <[Gary] GARY-S> no prob - Forsley is on Oct 6 <[Still Jax] VESTA> He is often busy till 8:30 PDT. <[Gary] GARY-S> I can believe <[Still Jax] VESTA> That is over an hour from now. <[Still Jax] VESTA> When is open? <[Still Jax] VESTA> So i can suggest a date. <[Gary] GARY-S> pick a time after Oct 6 <[Still Jax] VESTA> Any day or just thursday. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thursday is best because people are used to it. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Len we were going to invite Dr. Ting. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> . <[Gary] GARY-S> Bradley is sorta pegged for mid-Nov, but that isn't cast in stone <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Do you mean etched in concrete? <[Still Jax] VESTA> Was it Kevin Appert who said he would lend Ting a modem? <[Gary] GARY-S> close enough <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I gathered that. Ting would be very good. <[Gary] GARY-S> yes <[Still Jax] VESTA> But I have heard that he is not comfortable with Telecom, may just be a libel! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> He may not be a good typist. <[Still Jax] VESTA> He gets teased, I think. <[Gary] GARY-S> it's worth a shot - just let me know when/where to call him after you've chatted - ok ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> Some lowbrow was criticizing Ting's books tonite on ECFB. <[Still Jax] VESTA> I replied, "Hie thee to the feet of Ting and there learn instruction!" <[Gary] GARY-S> And how many books has the critic written ? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Disraeli said, "It is easier to be citcal than correct." <[Still Jax] VESTA> I don't think there is anyone except MOORE who understands Forth so thoroughly. <[Still Jax] VESTA> as ting, that is. <[Gary] GARY-S> hmmm - that is a very broad swath you just cut. standing by it ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> Think about it. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Ting has implemented forth on parallel, VAXen, image processors, pc's ... <[Gary] GARY-S> I try not to exclude that many people in one breath <[Still Jax] VESTA> he has explained, or help explain every popular Forth system since about 1981. <[Gary] GARY-S> I'm not arguing against Ting's Forth awareness, I'm in awe of it.... <[Still Jax] VESTA> And his conceptualizations are the most profound in our limited literature. <[Gary] GARY-S> I am just also aware others know a LOT <[Still Jax] VESTA> The yang/yin description of metacompilation. <[Still Jax] VESTA> His characterizations of popular processors by their strength as forth engines. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> He demonstated a music program to us... <[Still Jax] VESTA> His introduction to _Footsteps_ ... <[Still Jax] VESTA> . <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> It uses multitasking, one task for each instrument... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> A timer signals each when it it time to do its thing! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> . <[Gary] GARY-S> I had a thought, Jax <[Still Jax] VESTA> He is very creative, but more than that, he always sees what is the *core issue* about life/comp sci in each feature he describes. <[Gary] GARY-S> If Ting is reluctant because he doesn't feel comfortable typing on telecomm... <[Still Jax] VESTA> we are guessing, here, gary ... may be untrue <[Gary] GARY-S> maybe he WOULD respond to someone else doing the keying for him <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> It was only a thought. <[Still Jax] VESTA> that is a good idea! Who would be the "phantom typist?" <[Gary] GARY-S> who's going to loan the modem ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> i forget ... was it kevin? <[Gary] GARY-S> eggs-zackly <[Still Jax] VESTA> got a better idea. I will write to him. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Let me hang up and I will write him a letter tonite. <[Gary] GARY-S> why not the call ? <[Still Jax] VESTA> I think it is intrusive. <[Still Jax] VESTA> Well, hell, maybe I will. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I will see him Sat. at the N. Bay Fig. He almost always comes. <[Still Jax] VESTA> I dunno ... I always feel *coarse* telephoning at home. <[Gary] GARY-S> whatever, but I will be gone before the letter is returned, so there is no hurry <[Still Jax] VESTA> where going? <[Still Jax] VESTA> Ok len, i'll call him, why don't you talk to him. <[Gary] GARY-S> I got some business to attend to <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Let's do both. <[Still Jax] VESTA> your parole officer catch up with you gary? <[Still Jax] VESTA> ... :-) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Gary, do you have someone to cover Sept 15? <[Gary] GARY-S> close enough <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I am reluctant to commit myself, but will if nobody... <[Gary] GARY-S> I left a message up Jax <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> else is available <[Gary] GARY-S> the 22nd is Covered and Len said he'd get the 29th if I'm not back by then <[Still Jax] VESTA> I'll take the 5th ... :-) <[Still Jax] VESTA> cu @ well, guy! === End of Steno notes. ===
