Date: 09/05/91 Time: 22:35EDT Items discussed include why Ray Duncan not likeley as a conference guest, LMI UR-Forth, BASIS 17, retrofitting milling machines, Control Flow, ok prompt, free/shareware impacting commercial opportunity. Attendees: [GARY-S] [[MIKE] M.KELLY36] [[doug] D.GARRETT] [W.BADEN1] Minutes: is here. Hi Mike - how goes it ? is here. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> No complaints. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Like to see Ray Duncan as a guest. I would like to see Ray as a guest too, but that is totally out of the question <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Where are u from Doug? <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Why Gary ? <[doug] D.GARRETT> Bloomington Indiana. I see you're from New Jersey <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> How did you know that ? It's a long story, but in essence Ray would just rather not have any dealings with FIG, even ancillary contact such as this. is here. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Native hoosier myself. Spent most of my " wonder years " in Carbondale Ill. though. <[doug] D.GARRETT> Ray, as in Ray Duncan? (I came in late) <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Yep. Wil can support my statement - Ray Duncan, yes Doug <[doug] D.GARRETT> Hmmmm....I was thinking of buying his LMI UR/FORTH. Any opinions out there? <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Seems like a decent guy. Many dealings of late with him. Right. it's a personal issue with him. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> EXTREMELY GOOD PACKAGE !!!! Excellent package - and superb support It's a very good Forth. I wud hav ben happy to hav adopted it for ANS. I regret it, but I also recognize Ray's position and respect it <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Buy it and buy it NOW!!!! <[doug] D.GARRETT> I appreciate the opinion. Okay okay tomorrow I get the check book out!! It is the Forth with the most sales. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Seriously, for more info on it from a " user's " point of view, I can give u my work or home #. <[doug] D.GARRETT> LMI has a coupla other Forth systems. Y'all are talking about UR/FORTH yes ? Yes though LMI PC-Forth plus isn't exactly shabby <[doug] D.GARRETT> Yes, Mike, I'd like to chat via voice sometime soon. I'll hafta <[doug] D.GARRETT> sell the idea to my partner in this endeavor. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I use the UR/FORTH system now. Originally the PC/FORTH system. Also have experience with the 8096 metacompiler and have just ordere d the 68xxx metacompiler. <[doug] D.GARRETT> But we generaly agree that UR/FORTH is longer, lower, wider, and better. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> All very good products ( well supported too ). Last Friday I got the draft proposed ANS Standard. Donald long has his entire Florida Drum, extrusion plant running on a single 386 running UR-Forth <[doug] D.GARRETT> Gary: does your company/employer sell milling machines? no <[doug] D.GARRETT> Ah Laser CNC milling - yes machine milling, no <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I can be reached at 609 346-2212 ( home east coast with 9 mo. old so bear that in mind ) or work 609 767-6800 x 2286. <[doug] D.GARRETT> Thanks, Mike. Reall soon, I'll call. Whuz the scoop with ANS Standard, Wil? Is Donald Long back in the US? He was in Bad-Hamburg last time I called, but he was due back shortly Ther hav ben lots of editorial changes from Basis17, but nothing substantial. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Halfway through it myself. (I met Donald at German FORML 1985.)\ He said you had met there Still dpANS has many typos. I'm back with pseudo-status on X3J14.\ I hav to respond to comments on Control Flow. Hmmm - never say, "Never!", huh, Wil ? Yeah. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> They mispelled EXPECT. I'm unhappy that D+ and DNEGATE are no longer in the core. Flow control is sure a hot damn issue with John Wavrik He sure took issue with what TC did with START; Is he repeating himself, or am I dense? meaning ???? <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I think that the " ok " prompt should be stricken in favor of a prompt vector. I like the ok prompt, but could live with either <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I say ( again ) we lock Greg Bailey and John Wavrik in a room with a thesaurus and a dictionary and let 'em have at it. I saw that comment in the weeds,as it was ;-) Mike, no problem. Just write a one-line shell that interprets keyboard, \ responds the way you want. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Agreed, but " ok " is a relic. A prompt that gives you BASE and DEPTH info is far better. Wil - You're a Mac user - or are you ? Yes/ You do know Lowenstein is my Sept 19th guest ? Agreed, but no problem. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Orioles outfielder? You and names - NO! Bob Lowenstein who is promoting a revamped Neon as Yerk Yes. I intend to be here. (Next Thursday I will be at Orange Apple Computer Club board meeting.) <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> To me " knowing " what is to be expected from a standard is all that I really care about. It doesn't really affect me or my work in an embedded application. (I'm the local Big Mac, or more probably, Fat Mac.) <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Doug , you still here ? Really enjoyed those eels and sparrows, huh ? <[doug] D.GARRETT> yes. Just wondering how fat, Wil? <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> What is your application Doug ? For dog catcher\ <[doug] D.GARRETT> Well... Milling machine retro-fits. More than I want to make public. I frightened little children in China. The seventh son ! <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> BUDDHA IS BACK My belly's big enough, but my ear lobes are too short. <[doug] D.GARRETT> I quit my part-time MUMPS job a few months ago. Back to full <[doug] D.GARRETT> time electrical contracting. My knees hurt. <[doug] D.GARRETT> A buddy (ex-machine shop operator) tells me there are bookoo <[doug] D.GARRETT> Bridgeport mills OUT THERE, wanting to be upgraded. <[doug] D.GARRETT> Am I crazy to attempt it? About 50 of them at American Airlines repair center in Tulsa alone (if I remember correctly) (Gary, the cow tendons, ox blood clot soup, and sea slugs in brown sauce were my favorites.) <[doug] D.GARRETT> Are they sitting in corners, un-used and forlorn? mmm-mmm, makes my mouth water, for sure. Gooood cracker. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I agree. ( Stop me if I start to sound like anything even resembling a zealot ) But... I have long thought that Forth is a great ch oice for metal shop work automation of ANY kind. Most of an operator's time is spent " in laying out " a cut. <[doug] D.GARRETT> yeah yeah, pump me up! Matter of fact they were in use, Doug <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> I'm not kidding. Our own shop experiences this very thing. Mike, there is a tremendous after market doing just that ! Creating front-ends for CNC controllers <[doug] D.GARRETT> My buddy has found 9 Bridgeports and 3 Burgmasters <[doug] D.GARRETT> scattered throughout the state, sitting in corners with <[doug] D.GARRETT> busted controls. Bridgeport won't touch them... <[doug] D.GARRETT> The shop managers tell him YES YES sign a contract right now! That sounds like, "Name your price !" <[doug] D.GARRETT> Well, he says they've been quoted $30k to $50k per machine. Seems like <[doug] D.GARRETT> there's some room for profit there. But maybe I'm overlooking something... <[doug] D.GARRETT> I know how to bid electrical power & light installations, but this is... <[doug] D.GARRETT> something entirely new. I'm logged in tonight on a NEC UltraLite I picked up from a liquidator (IME). Nice little laptop. Doug - do it smart. Bid at quote plus parts <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> The BIG down side is .... once they're automated ... the operator's need to be trained. And I gotta tell you when blue collar sees jo bs going out the window, you are gonna meet Resistance. <[doug] D.GARRETT> My turn to cook dinner, so I gotta go. Hmmm... I didn't completely follow... I heard that - BUT a machine to operate beats the heck out of boat anchors <[doug] D.GARRETT> what you meant, Gary. <[doug] D.GARRETT> about "bid at quote plus parts", that is BID at say 28K plus travel/parts. That way you are assured of a nice profit. No hidden losses. <[doug] D.GARRETT> ah, I like it. Mike, as far as resistance by blue collar types goes... <[doug] D.GARRETT> These shops are already automated. The Bridgeports have been shelved (they <[doug] D.GARRETT> are obsolete NC and CNC), and newer machines are in use right now... <[doug] D.GARRETT> Upgrading the Bridgeports will just add more production capability at "minimal" cost. Maybe even add jobs. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Great ... if you have ???'s about LMI et al. give me a buzz at home or work. <[doug] D.GARRETT> Mike, can I call tomorrow nite (Friday). And both of you, thanks for the positive comments. nite Doug <[doug] D.GARRETT> Nice to have you back, Wil. Sorry I gotta fly. Hunger hurts. Bye. Sounds like he may have an inside road to some nice security <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> So Gary, why is Ray D. reticent about participating in a discourse such as this? He does NOT like FIG - pure and simple This RT is FIG sponsored <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> But there HAS to be a reason. I don't think it is my place to discuss Ray's position, though Gresham's law applied to program products. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> ???? That's a fair assesment, and well said. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> It may be fair but ... .XX: do you mean Wil ? Free software drives out commercial software. That, in essence, is the sum and total of the standoff, as it were. I can't quibble with Ray's position, personally. Nor can I. I can tell you, he's always been totally upfront with me. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> FIG CAN'T have taken that big a bite. A " REAL " company would be crazy to use aFIG Forth ( unless it was their own ). You asked, and you have a bonified answer. I can't add to that. How about eForth, cmForth, Pygmy? F83, FPC? GK-Forth, which is a commercial class kernel. and BBL <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Wil, if I went to my boss and said " Mervin here downloaded this software off a BBS, I think we ought to go with it ... my boss wou ld have another employee real quick. Support, upgrades ... mean a lot . Right, but vendors do see free ware as a threat. Mike, BBL and GK-Forth are both major pieces of work, that have no doubt impacted the price/demand level of Commercial products The primary distributor of this free/shareware is FIG. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Who wrote 'em ? Who backs 'em ? Who is RESPONSIBLE ? A board of director's would want to know. Roedy Green, Guy Kelly, Frank Sergeant, C.H. Ting are all well respected names. Wil Baden Mike Perry <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Don't get me wrong. FIG is great. It is the initiation for most of us into Forth. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> And all of these people ( no offense Wil ) would STOP what they are doing to provide me ( the downloader ) with support. I obviously agree, as a SysOp on their public media; but it is rather myopic not to consider other opinions. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> As Descartes said ( just before he disappeared ) " I think NOT !!! " <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> ( Old joke ... but it fit ) I dunno - Mitch Bradley does some pretty serious support for his Forthmacs, and it is VERY inexpensive. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> Gotta go ... nice typin' to ya both. See ya next Thurs. or Sun. So long, Mike. <[MIKE] M.KELLY36> has left. sounds like a good place to nail the door shut. === End of Steno notes. ===
