Minutes of the FIGGY BAR RT Conference. Date: 08/03/89 Time: 22:18EDT Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[Kevin] APPERT] [[Dennis] D.RUFFER] [[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN] Items discussed: Chuck Moore conference 8/24,OOF package, Fortran on GEnie, Ada at DoD,Missing SIGFORTH newsletters,Forth resource update, space shuttle CPU's, Freemont box benders Minutes: is here. <[Kevin] APPERT> him Dennis Hello Gary, Kevin <[Kevin] APPERT> oops Him=HI <[Gary] GARY-S> Denni - I'm here - go unpack, whatever <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> no, you've got it wrong...this time I'm packing to go home tomorrow YEA! <[Gary] GARY-S> go pack then <[Kevin] APPERT> where are you ? <[Gary] GARY-S> guess you saw who our August conferee is <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> I'm in Rochester right now kevin <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yes, how did you convince Chuck to do it? <[Gary] GARY-S> asked him - he's nice, so am I (any arguments ) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> no argument from me :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> He was hoping to be able to make an announcement, but that is not to be <[Kevin] APPERT> Forth is rather good, as religions go. You can't talk to Buddah or Martin Luther any more. is here. <[Kevin] APPERT> hi Dave <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Hullo <[Gary] GARY-S> guess you also noted the problem I had with GEnie yesterday - it's fixed <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ah yes, you have access now? <[Gary] GARY-S> yep <[Gary] GARY-S> What the hell do they do with those flags anyway ? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> just danl and company playing around again <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> you know them programmer types... <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> just can't leave well enough alone :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> Dave W's shortfall as a writer in need of space is going to be our library windfall - right Dave ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> The OO code will be uploaded *REAL SOON NOW*. I need to make sure that what is in is working, add polymorphism and auto-initializ ation, and then tighten up the code a wee bit. (Then later add a heap manager, integrate that with the OO code, through the whole thing on top ogf the virtual memory system) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> err throw. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Right. All code will be uploaded. The modules and record code are fine and working nicely (at least every time I've checked...no bugs so far have crept back in). <[Kevin] APPERT> Flags? <[Gary] GARY-S> enable/attend flags for conference/category areas Kev <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> And they can be uploaded whenever it is I have a chance. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Danl is the GEnie system programmer kevin, and he is responsible for all this stuff we complain about <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> The OO code is still being revised, expanded, and cleaned up. And I still have to write an article about a moving platform. :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Have pitty on the man...isn't this system done in Fortran? <[Gary] GARY-S> Timing is great Dave - there has been a resurgence of OO interest - witness the messages in the NEON Topic (I expanded into OOF) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (no no no...one t...one t... stupid fingers) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Fortran and C (mostly now) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Yeah. It's been all over Usenet. I'm busy today and tomorrow (a good friend is getting married), but given time I hope to have it uploaded in the next week. <[Gary] GARY-S> I don't think the Fortran is doing the forgetting <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (The resurgence in OO code) <[Gary] GARY-S> I think disk swapping is the problem <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Real Programmer's Rule #1: Blame everything on inferior languages like Fortran. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Real Programmer's Rule #2: Avoid Ada like the plague. (Ada is a trade mark of the bloody DoD) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Fortran is something no one will trade mark because they are not willing to take the blame) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Danl is really quite good at it, and admits when it IS his mistake <[Gary] GARY-S> DoD is trying harder and harder to enforce ADA only to find resistance mounting - I love it <[Kevin] APPERT> Bacas admits blame <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Ada is a monstrosity. Shout it from the hilltops. Shout it in the classrooms. Shout it in the design meetings. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> DoD has created so many loop holes, even Forth can get in <[Gary] GARY-S> ForTran is still a helova bit twiddler/pure cruncher <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Ahh...but it is also a monstrosity. It is possible to be both (just look at a Cyber) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> actually, anywhere they can, they have rewritten the GEnie code into C <[Gary] GARY-S> After twenty + years it is pointless to try to patch lousey I/O <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> tis a pity that no one has written Forth for the Honeywells yet :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> "I don't know what scientists will be using in the year 2000, but they'll call it Fortran" <[Gary] GARY-S> Fortran 99 <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> There was talk of that a while back... remember. It died a horrid death when we found it out we'd have to code it in Fortran. <[Gary] GARY-S> Hmmm - quiche eaters - not in pure binary ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Anything else new out there? (I'm on a quick schedule tonight...I need to run lots of errands and then get ready for tomorrow) <[Gary] GARY-S> Dave - where the heck are the SIGFORTH newsletters ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> George is on that one. I got one by a back handed method. The information... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ACM sent me regarding local SIGForth chapters... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...included two big packets of newsletters, including the first SigForth newsletter. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Which to my surprise made me Local Chapter Coordinator) <[Kevin] APPERT> I got mine thru normal distribution <[Gary] GARY-S> Tell George he's going to start getting the JFAR treatment - every FIGGY there will be a bitch <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Which reminds me...ACM is extremely good at legalspeak. I still haven't finished my legalese->techie translation of the local Sig guidelines. (Also needs to be done this weekend). <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> It is ACM you should blame...they do they distribution. CAll *them* up this week and bitch. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> -y <[Kevin] APPERT> what if you don't speak techie? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> What??? You want me to translate into *english*??? :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (I could translate it into yiddish) :-) <[Kevin] APPERT> oi <[Gary] GARY-S> no - American <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> no - Forth! <[Kevin] APPERT> empty do-nothing loops? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> : LOCAL-SIG BEGIN GET-FORM GET-PERMISSION GET-PERMISSION FILE-FORM GET-FORM FILE-FORM GET-MEMBERS GET-APPROVAL AGAIN ; IMMEDIATE <[Kevin] APPERT> looks endless to me <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> reverse polish legalese? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> It's not *that* bad. It's just thick. If you have a local ACM chapter...it looks pretty easy. <[Gary] GARY-S> Remeber - it is time to update the BBS/resource list, so pass on info <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> If you don't then it gets a bit more complicated. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Ok. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Well...I need to go. Buy <[Gary] GARY-S> I talked to Druma, dave <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Err Bye...I need to go buy) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Oh? Are they linking into ForthNet? <[Gary] GARY-S> I suggested it <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> SO did I. Maybe they'll decide to. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Later. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> do you want vendor boards on the list gary <[Gary] GARY-S> They can be reached by StarLink <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> /run-errands <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> see ya dave <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> has left. <[Gary] GARY-S> you bet ! <[Gary] GARY-S> any and all <[Gary] GARY-S> we already have LMI and RCFB which is essentially Vesta <[Gary] GARY-S> does Harvard have one ? <[Gary] GARY-S> Jim Callahan's H/S not the Univ <[Gary] GARY-S> hello ???? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> i can give you the number of Forth, Inc's board (213) 318-6884, but can't remember the sysop's last name (it's randy something) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> haven't heard of H/S hanving one <[Gary] GARY-S> e-mail it so I can compile the whole thing - include baud rates. ..etc <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ok, when I get back to have the right names ok? <[Gary] GARY-S> is Ray LMI's SysOp since Ron is gone ? <[Gary] GARY-S> enough of that -,anything new shaking at Rockwell ? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> I could check this weekend. Maybe they have the sysop's name on the front door??? <[Gary] GARY-S> please do Dennis <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> wrote a note to do it <[Gary] GARY-S> I think we are sans kevin <[Kevin] APPERT> hi <[Gary] GARY-S> anything new ? <[Kevin] APPERT> couldn't think of anything to say, so I was busy not saying it <[Gary] GARY-S> Did that code job ever make it out the door despite management ? <[Kevin] APPERT> a while back the software was "released" <[Gary] GARY-S> Are those still AIM's on the shuttles ? <[Kevin] APPERT> I'm fighting flakey RAMs now. <[Kevin] APPERT> AIM's? <[Gary] GARY-S> that's what I was told <[Kevin] APPERT> GRIDs <[Gary] GARY-S> for controllers <[Gary] GARY-S> really <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> which GRiD do they use? <[Gary] GARY-S> Doesn't Tandy own GRID, now <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yes <[Kevin] APPERT> they were flying trs80-100 laptops before the accident, but not any more <[Gary] GARY-S> hope they didn't need fast screens <[Kevin] APPERT> you had to swap out the plastic shield over the LCD, but other than that you could fly as is <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> my GRiD flys with me all the time <[Gary] GARY-S> how come the choice(s) 0 rugged ? <[Kevin] APPERT> no, the lens swap comment was about the trs80/100 <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> why did they switch? <[Kevin] APPERT> they were ill disposed to fly a cheap plasti computer in a man-rated vehicle after an accident, I guess <[Gary] GARY-S> do the grids actually do any more ? <[Kevin] APPERT> a bit, they are PC compatible <[Gary] GARY-S> I kno they can - do they <[Kevin] APPERT> they have floppy drives instead of audio cassette <[Kevin] APPERT> they were always flying grids. they just stopped the trs100s <[Gary] GARY-S> Now - I would worry about floppy's taking the G's <[Kevin] APPERT> floppys can generally take more Gs than people <[Kevin] APPERT> Grids are able to withstand the vibration and forces, they are pretty rugged <[Gary] GARY-S> which model - the compass <[Kevin] APPERT> don't know, think that's the one <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> mines starting to have connector problems though <[Gary] GARY-S> use goldwipes Dennis <[Gary] GARY-S> from texwipe <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> problem is getting to them...pretty tight spacing <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> I've got some at home, if I can only locate the right box : -) <[Gary] GARY-S> then burn a hole in the ozone and zap them with freon tf <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> that may be the only way...I've never seen such small spacing on header connectors <[Gary] GARY-S> till 1992 it's still legal anyway <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> better go stock up on some <[Gary] GARY-S> do NOT use contact cleaner !!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> heck - no shelf life <[Gary] GARY-S> no freon will keep indefinitely <[Gary] GARY-S> except in a hermetically sealed vessel - and what good is that <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yep, but I'd better find a can when I get home <[Gary] GARY-S> make sure it is Freon-tf <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> this disk drive just suddenly decides it want to cycle power <[Gary] GARY-S> you may have pwr sup foil path cracking instead <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Since I'm fairly close to Fremont CA, I might just drop in for a PM <[Gary] GARY-S> just call me the sunshine man :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> surprised they haven't moved operations to Ft Worth <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> there is a little bar inside that turns red when exposed to excessive vibration, and one of them is red (it dropped a little while back) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> not to mention the constant vibration over curbs :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> PM might be more than advised if you aren't up to cleaning foil paths <[Gary] GARY-S> with a soldering iron <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> my handy dandy Radio trash volt meter is almost dead anyway <[Gary] GARY-S> How come there's so many pc makers in the Freemont area - anyone know ? <[Kevin] APPERT> cheap labor? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> the chip maker used to be there, now there are a lot of spare engineers <[Gary] GARY-S> lot of industrial pc packagers there <[Kevin] APPERT> well, this evening seems to be kinda dead. See ya'all soon. I'm gonna scoot <[Gary] GARY-S> any thing more forthish ? <[Kevin] APPERT> has left. <[Gary] GARY-S> yeah - let's close the Bar <[Gary] GARY-S> g'nite <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> did we boore him <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> good early night gary <[Gary] GARY-S> take care <[Gary] GARY-S> have a good trip === End of Steno notes. ===
