Minutes of the FIGGY BAR RT Conference. Date: 07/27/89 Time: 22:21EDT Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[Mike] M.MELLEN1] [[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN] Items discussed: The Computer Journal, Harris RTX, Harris BBS, Austin Druma Forth BBS, possible conf guest Koopman ? Minutes: is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> Welcome is here. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Hullo <[Gary] GARY-S> Dave what is <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Well...the OO code is going to be... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...too big to fit in the magazine... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...so it will be released in a few weeks. <[Gary] GARY-S> how come no column last issue ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> We postponed it into a double issue for next one. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (The first column was weak) <[Gary] GARY-S> Kilber didn't even have any Forth goodies <[Gary] GARY-S> Hi mike <[mike] M.MELLEN1> howdy <[Gary] GARY-S> how's fla ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> hot and humid! (and busy) <[Gary] GARY-S> These Thursday FIGGY's are open cesspool - just jump in like on an old party-line telephone <[mike] M.MELLEN1> This is my first time here, so I'll probably listen for awhile <[Gary] GARY-S> Dave - anything in the Austin wantads ? <[Gary] GARY-S> On guest nights we keep things neat, mike, but on FIGGY nights we permit interlacing (overtyping) .. <[Gary] GARY-S> it can be confusing but you get more bang for your buck that way <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> BTW One mistake in the intor to Forth that I caught though (shamefaced look). Since I already called Art with *one* set of correcti ons... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I am going to try and call him again. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I made the mistake of describing a construct from my all to fallible memory. <[Gary] GARY-S> at least you get to preview <[Gary] GARY-S> I have yet to see a galley on any magazine I ever wrote for <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> What preview. I found one mistake, and I just now found another. (Sad look). I had stated that Bin a BEGIN...WHILE...REPEAT loop, the BEGIN..WHILE section was only exectued once. <[Gary] GARY-S> short damn loop <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I have not gotten galley proofs. Just looking back over the disk in preperation for the next column. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> No. That the BEGIN...WHILE would execute once, and the WHILE...REPEAT would repeat while the flag was true. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> When of course BEGIN...WHILE always executes once, and the whole thing executes so long as the flag is true. <[Gary] GARY-S> writing your own constructs now ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Goes off to make phone call). I'll be back later on if I can. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> disconnected. <[Gary] GARY-S> I can't wait to see what you do with <[Gary] GARY-S> just us mike - so waht do you do ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> me heap (no pun intended) programmer at Harris Semi - RTX 2000 <[Gary] GARY-S> Are you sure this is your first time here ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> When I'm not out hyping the part to customers <[mike] M.MELLEN1> In this life at least. (this life? I've been listening to my wife too much) <[Gary] GARY-S> We had another Harris RTX troop on then <[Gary] GARY-S> I'd like to see some RTX non-proprietary goodies posted to the library <[mike] M.MELLEN1> Come to think of it, I was on briefly a coupla months back <[Gary] GARY-S> Uploads are free , and you would be hyping to a target audience <[mike] M.MELLEN1> Sorry, I missed the first part of the sentence.. <[Gary] GARY-S> ok - try to upload some RTX info and non-proprietary code to our library... <[Gary] GARY-S> uploads are free time and... <[Gary] GARY-S> you would be hyping a prime, target audience <[mike] M.MELLEN1> We have an RTX BBS, and my boss is after me to get some code on that first. <[mike] M.MELLEN1> Then I can transfer some to a wider audience <[Gary] GARY-S> talk to him - this is an opportunity Harris should not forgoe, especially since... <[Gary] GARY-S> the library here and text gets respawned a couple of times through the... <[Gary] GARY-S> ForthNet. <[Gary] GARY-S> we also would like to see about getting your BBS into the net <[Gary] GARY-S> interesting ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> The trouble i <[mike] M.MELLEN1> sorry, I missed the first part again. <[Gary] GARY-S> stay with me a minute... <[Gary] GARY-S> The code and stuff loaded into our... <[Gary] GARY-S> library is replicated through the ForthNet.. is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> therefore you reach a much larger audience than GEnie... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Satisfied look) Caught Art in time to get the correction in. <[Gary] GARY-S> you also get the ECFB, NCFB, RCFB and part of metroLink <[Gary] GARY-S> .. <[Gary] GARY-S> we also want to get Harris' BBS into the loop if possible <[mike] M.MELLEN1> most of the non-proprietary stuff is benchmark andd simple application, probably not <[mike] M.MELLEN1> much interest to Forth community at large. <[Gary] GARY-S> there is an audience for that - you are wrong, wrong, wrong ! <[Gary] GARY-S> tell him dave <[Gary] GARY-S> RTX stuff <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Mike: We are a small enough community that *everything* is of interest. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> And RTX stuff especially. <[Gary] GARY-S> and forthnet <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Especially to those of use who cannot afford them) :-) <[mike] M.MELLEN1> okay, hopefully our users will be uploading some good stuff too <[Gary] GARY-S> I can promise Chuck's buffalo chip and SC's SC32 will be getting posted to the library... <[mike] M.MELLEN1> what kind of stuff would you like to see? <[Gary] GARY-S> does Harris really want NOT to ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> not to what? <[Gary] GARY-S> get the same audience <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Well...aside from the offers of free systems (1/2 :-) ), examples of uses, extensions, tricks, and such that are being used. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> It is important in a commmunity this small... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...that we keep each other up to date with what... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...is being done... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ...can be done... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> ,...and should be done. This way we have more ammunition to use Forth in non-Forth shops. <[mike] M.MELLEN1> (backing into a corner) okay, okay I get the message <[Gary] GARY-S> Dave - you missed my shot - I said I couldn't wait (based on your BEGIN WHILE REPEAT... to see your :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> You think I'm a hard sell. Wait until Jax gets here... :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Not to mention the DO..ME-A-FAVOR loop (an infinite construct). <[Gary] GARY-S> Jax and Vesta are a prime shop for your RTX 2000 <[mike] M.MELLEN1> ? you've been reading the spec for our 32-bit processor <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Anyway...it should be corrected by the time it gets to press. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> No. But we'd like to. :-) <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (grin) <[Gary] GARY-S> Is that an infinite lop <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> No. A lop is a kind of bunny. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Although considering the way they breed they could be considered infinite) <[Gary] GARY-S> mike - who is the SysOp of your BBS ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> Beta site: It can be arranged <[mike] M.MELLEN1> At the moment I'm SysOp, until we hire a slave to take it and other unpleasant tasks over <[Gary] GARY-S> What are you running for a board ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> RBBS-PC on a Compaq. Single phone line at the moment. Better equipment if we <[mike] M.MELLEN1> get enough usage <[Gary] GARY-S> any chance you might go PC-BOARD ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> There's always a chance for change. why PC-BOARD (other than it's very popular) <[Gary] GARY-S> Because ECFB, NCFB, RCFB are all connected via PC-BOARD, that's why <[mike] M.MELLEN1> good reason. At the moment, our board is in the 'set it up and see if anybody usees it' stage <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> What is the phone number? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> 407-729-4949 <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Thanks. <[Gary] GARY-S> If Harris will spring for the call why don't you log onto... <[mike] M.MELLEN1> 24 hours a day, except when our summer intern accidentally takes it off-line to use the printer <[mike] M.MELLEN1> (can't train these software people!) <[Gary] GARY-S> ECFB at 703-442-8695 and check it out <[mike] M.MELLEN1> I have. Good selection of stuff. <[Gary] GARY-S> You would see how that would put you in the loop <[Gary] GARY-S> You will notice GEnie and ECFB pretty much echo each other <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I've been prodding at Druma to link into the network (they are already running PC-BOARD, and it would give Austin a local node). <[Gary] GARY-S> SCFB ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I don't know what they would want to call it. <[mike] M.MELLEN1> We've probably had enough u use to convince my management to spend some bucks on a real system. <[Gary] GARY-S> I will have starlink soon - what's the number ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Druma Forth BBS: (512) 323-2402. Almost no activity whatsoever. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> (Seriously...it is deader than a door nail. If plugged into the xCFBs though...) <[Gary] GARY-S> clear it so I don't have to do the confirmation/validation dance, can you ? <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I don't remember there being much of a confirmation/validat ion dance. <[Gary] GARY-S> ok - there is on some boards <[Gary] GARY-S> what about yours mike ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> no problem getting on. I check it every morning and validate most new users on the spot. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Yeah. I've gotten around that in Austin through "second hand validation". I send sysops mail on a board we have in common to tell them that the person applying really is me. <[Gary] GARY-S> tell you what mike - soon as I get a little time I'll log on... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> I'll give it a call tonight. <[Gary] GARY-S> see if you can get a couple of short (70-80 line files) and I will post them on the BBS here <[mike] M.MELLEN1> okay, but there's not a lot on it right now <[Gary] GARY-S> just when you get time... <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> So. What *is* the latest news about the RTX family? <[Gary] GARY-S> after I get on and validated - <[Gary] GARY-S> post them to my e-mail ASCII <[mike] M.MELLEN1> wok <[Gary] GARY-S> is the RTX 32 bit ready <[mike] M.MELLEN1> the RT? <[Gary] GARY-S> that's it ???? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> could you repeat the question re: 32 bit <[Gary] GARY-S> just what is the status <[mike] M.MELLEN1> rtx4002 (or 4001, I forget) will have prototype silicon by December, available <[mike] M.MELLEN1> to real world around May/June. RTX4000 (floating point ALU) available next <[mike] M.MELLEN1> summer sometime <[Gary] GARY-S> what libraries (ASIC) can marry ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> I'm not a silicon person. Sorry. I don't know the answer <[Gary] GARY-S> hanks heaps ;-) <[mike] M.MELLEN1> if you call me during working hours at 407-729-4189, I can direct you to <[mike] M.MELLEN1> one of our ASIC experts who can answer you <[Gary] GARY-S> think anyone out there would like to appear as a conference guest ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> Phil Koopman (Mr WISC aka RTX4000) is now a Harris employee, and might <[mike] M.MELLEN1> be interested in talking about some of his architectural ideas <[Gary] GARY-S> he'd be good - ask Phil <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> He'd be very good! <[mike] M.MELLEN1> I'll see him tomorrow. <[Gary] GARY-S> any last shots, folks ? <[mike] M.MELLEN1> none from this part of the twilight zone <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> Nope. I'm off and back to work. <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> See you around the net... <[Gary] GARY-S> take care and thanks for comming tonite <[Dave] DHWEINSTEIN> has left. <[mike] M.MELLEN1> adios <[mike] M.MELLEN1> has left. <[Gary] GARY-S> g'nite === End of Steno notes. ===
