Minutes of the FIGGY BAR RT Conference. Date: 05/25/89 Time: 22:39EDT Attendees: [[Gary] GARY-S] [[len] NMORGENSTERN] [D.RUFFER] [[jax] FIGCHAPTERS] [W.BADEN1] (This was a meeting of the deacons !) Items discussed: FIG's financial health and GEnie, ANSI as a not-so-non-profit organization and other axes. Minutes: is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> Hi Len Hi How goes? Are you still on call? <[Gary] GARY-S> you bet, but not tonite Good, you can relax. I remember the days when I was on call If the phone rings, you feel it in your stomach. <[Gary] GARY-S> Phone hell ! I wear a pager Ah modern times! <[Gary] GARY-S> They can ALWAYS find me I have always thought of the phone as an instrument of the devil Fortunately, I have never had to use a pager. <[Gary] GARY-S> It is - the devil of it is , it is now a necessity much of the time I plan to cancel Sunday Figgy. We never get many attendees on a holiday <[Gary] GARY-S> Pagers are good and bad - they relieve you from the tedium of having to... is here. <[Gary] GARY-S> stay close to a phone and/or check in... Hi Dennis! <[Gary] GARY-S> That is definitely better. Right. HI SYSOPS <[Gary] GARY-S> Again , there is no respite, though. ... <[Gary] GARY-S> You are ALWAYS available. <[Gary] GARY-S> Hi Dennis. At my medical school, the interns were 2 to a room, hi guys, just us workers showed up? the operator would ring 1 or 2. They learned to sleep through when the ring was not for them. Nobody here but us roosters, Dennis. <[Gary] GARY-S> I actually got where I slept through the diving klaxon... <[Gary] GARY-S> on the submarine I was on, and... <[Gary] GARY-S> with God as my witness, it was only 3 - 4 feet from my rack. <[Gary] GARY-S> Enough of that - any Forth stuff to cuss/discuss ? <[Gary] GARY-S> Dennis - how do our figures look to you (author's report) and remember this is public. a public "review" huh <[Gary] GARY-S> why not well, we are not costing more than we generate yet but we are pretty close we seem to be holding our revenue base but our costs have been increasing as we add files we still make money every month and our usage statistics are still going up. if you want to see some real statistics I could go capture some? <[Gary] GARY-S> Let me comment and ask a question in that order... <[Gary] GARY-S> The statement : I was real encouraged by traffic the past few days/weeks... <[Gary] GARY-S> but noticed it had fallen off tonight. <[Gary] GARY-S> The question: Would it be to our advantage... <[Gary] GARY-S> or a dis-service to catalog and.. <[Gary] GARY-S> remove inactive files. ?.... <[Gary] GARY-S> I know IF I were a paying user and had to.. <[Gary] GARY-S> ask for a file and then come back for it... <[Gary] GARY-S> I'd just take my business elsewhere. well even Jerry has been putting some of his files... into offline archives, or re-organizing them better. we are lucky, that we don't have to pay for storage... however, big brother is still watching, and he will become... concerned if we start costing more than we can generate... when I say our earnings ratio climbing... is here. I started the OFFLINE lists, and it has seemed to help... so far, only one person has asked to have something... uploaded again. Then we even got more downloads... many of the other RTs have been experimenting... with ideas like this. Some will take files offline... others will just reupload the "dead" ones. the reupload sounds like a "trick"... <[Gary] GARY-S> So does LAPTOPS here on GEnie. IBM PC and CP/M do not.<- store files, that is. ... The LAPTOPS has less traffic than we do... the IBM and CP/M are up on the top of the lists <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> x3j14? cell size? they can support many more files than we can <[Gary] GARY-S> They also have thousands of files on-line I think IBM is sitting close to 15K files right now <[Gary] GARY-S> true - and CP/M 7000 <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> page 556 @ 7 or 8 k I have no idea what their revenue is... but I'll bet it is doing pretty good. I've been told that we should be doing closer to... <[Gary] GARY-S> I guess what I'm wondering is this... <[Gary] GARY-S> is there a direct correlation between files available.. <[Gary] GARY-S> and traffic in the BBS. is here. not really the files are only one source of revenue it tends to be the largest source... <[Gary] GARY-S> You also say they are a storage albatross but a healthy BB traffic pays a lot of bills <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> dennis ... try ADVERTISING .. i.e. FIG GE RT ... Largest on-line repository of Forth files IN THE WORLD!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> That's arguable yea, I've noticed we are not hardly even mentioned in 4D anymore :-( <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> by`whom? yes it is argueable <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> by whom? <[len] NMORGENSTERN> Advertise where? The number of Forthers who are not members of FIG <[len] NMORGENSTERN> are legion. I believe ECFB has a larger library than we do <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> how about ESP magazine? INCREDIBLE response to vesta's ad. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ECFB doesn't have a larger lib on line. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> What is ESP? <[Gary] GARY-S> Cost's bucks and we are NOT selling a product <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> besiteh hell we ain't! Actually <[Gary] GARY-S> Embedded Systems Programming we have started to discuss adverts with GEnie <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> what you mean "we aren't selling a product?" sheesh. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> thanx but I have not followed up on it <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> we sure are ... on line services. besides handing it off to Kent... I guess that is a mistake <[Gary] GARY-S> Not like a sbc like vesta where we can recover ad costs ! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> yes we can! how? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> if you double readership, you double revenue, right dennis? yes, but will we actually double it? <[Gary] GARY-S> Jax - get real ! I have run ads and they are EXPENSIVE mothas <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> you had better. I agree that is the goal, but not always reality <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> i think that some business sense is lacking in FIG. If I find some time, I will bug Kent about it again <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> why bother? <[Gary] GARY-S> Do we NOT have a business manager ? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Is that really Kent's job? yes it is supposed to be <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Kent's job is not, jaxthinx, to fillin for a lack of creativity on FIG's part. He is there to be of technical assistance. To buy the ad you design. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> That would also be my impression actually it is the job of a publicity person, which we are sorely lacking right now <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> You have to have something to publicize. the ads have already been designed <[Gary] GARY-S> Well, Mr. Board member, I believe we have aired (publicly, no less) a complaint about performance of the business manager... some very nice ones from GEnie <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> "Hurry to FORTH, the Camille of programming languages ... " :-) but we haven't tried to use them yet <[Gary] GARY-S> will you please forward same at the next meeting ? yes and I will see what I can do about it NOW! <[Gary] GARY-S> ting ewe <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> oh ,bs. Kent does his job. It's just no one is giving things much direction, hiuh? you are right jax <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> FIG has yet to demonstrate it has a genuine strategy to save declining interest. I can only blame myself <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> But maybe ... <[Gary] GARY-S> I said management - not - job performance, jax <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> that is only my perspective from 1500 miles away. it is my job to follow up what I have asked the FIG offices to do <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> advertising in GEnie magazine is silly. I will do it (anyone have another round toit?) <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Anyone on GEnie who wants us will find us within three months. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> We pop up in the logo that often. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> We need to advertise where control programmers and project planners will see us. <[Gary] GARY-S> I also perceive a lack of direction, jax - either what you have is contageous, or the fact is genuinely noticable <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> and teenagers. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> teenagers. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> teenagers. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> teenagers. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> I don't know if you know it <[len] NMORGENSTERN> but CompuServe now bills monthly or quarterly lack of direction is noticable gary <[Gary] GARY-S> is the pean for new blood ringing in mine ear ? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> try a board election! :-) <[len] NMORGENSTERN> They used to charge for what you used, which could be $0 we tried to do something about it <[len] NMORGENSTERN> This may cause a movement away from them. but I don't see many results yet we are hoping it does len <[Gary] GARY-S> I sure closed my CIS account ! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> len, compuserve and bix have both introduced innovative new billing schemes. they are all hurting <[Gary] GARY-S> all expensive I might add while we are gaining ground :-) <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> well, not bad for a year's service as a sysop, $499 (?) on BIX <[Gary] GARY-S> Phil Wasson's area on BIX is barely a shadow of its former self. <[Gary] GARY-S> sad, too <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> maybe the mainframe bbs is not profitable any more ... s..t we do better than that <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> GEnie seems to be doing ok, though. at least FIG does <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> We are probably killing Phil's board, us and ForthNet. GEnie doesn't have to worry about supporting a network <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ????????????????????/ GEISCO is dooing great at that <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> genie IS a network <[Gary] GARY-S> BIX's attitude isn't helping - it stinks of McGraw-Hill no GEISCO is the network <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> they pay geisco.you better believe they account for every penny! we just utilize their off hours excesses <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> not so ... i.e. new rate structure ... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> furthermoe ... right now, GEnie only accounts for about 10% of GEISCO's income <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> GEnie introducing new daytime semi-service, partial access to GEnie via 976 phone numbers in pilot run in Dnever currently. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> GEisco's net under-utilized, GEnie part of strategy to bring it back up towards capacity. that pilot is not going over very big jack <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> correect. they are getting more aggresive <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> right. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> GEnie is doing better than the others, gaining as the others decline. GEISCO is starting to notice us, and we are starting to impact their bottom line <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> "Let a Thousand BBSes Bloom" remember, we have NO costs, so GEnie's income directly affects the bottom line <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> x3j14? cell size? the new rates, merely reflect how they see us going <[Gary] GARY-S> how do you want it implemented <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> not at all <[Gary] GARY-S> call it / them what ? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> : CELL whatever ; <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> : CELLS whatever * ; <[Gary] GARY-S> why not part of the word set <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> controlled reference. <[Gary] GARY-S> to reflect say 32 bits on a 386 <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> or ONE bit on the NASA MPP <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ...:-) <[Gary] GARY-S> There are STLL lots of 8-bitters out there. ignore them ? they had better not, gary <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> can you see it? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Nasa Ames implementation of CELL ... CE;; and CELL+ are required words (this quarter). <[Gary] GARY-S> so - back to my evening's question ? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> : CELL 8 / ; <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ... :-) <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ..????? CELL+ ????? that's not standard practice, who came up with that novelty? has anybody reported on ANSI? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> CELLS yes. <[Gary] GARY-S> how to do so - dynamically as part of the kernel (I would hope) <[len] NMORGENSTERN> CELL+ would be used to move the address pointer up 1 <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> HEY BTW a guy who worked on the last FORTRAN standard told me THEY DISTRIBUTED BASIS ELECTRONICALLY ... but limited it to ONE OUTL ET> Correction CELLS AND CELL+. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> 1 cell+ that is <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> nice novelty. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> who needs it in standard. CELL CELLS but CELL+ ??? <[Gary] GARY-S> They didn't on ANSI 'C', and we all know what a happy success story that rewrite of Pascal is No , 1 cells or 0 CELL+ <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> i can see we is in a heap o' trouble already. <[Gary] GARY-S> I hope this is not already cast in portland cement, wil <[len] NMORGENSTERN> Address arithmetic and arithmetic arithmetic are not necessarily the same <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> yeah wil, put on your armor and fight in our crusade for a little X3J14 glasnost! DEFINITELY not. What What is most bothersome? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> TC hiding from telecom. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> you're here, ray duncan is here, bailey *used* to come visit ... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> mike n. pops up once a threemonth. <[Gary] GARY-S> Bailey was THE TC liaison for a l-o-n-g time. So I refuse to badmouth Greg <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> where is he now? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ... :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> I guess he and Ted both got tired of writing to a vacuum <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> they weren't <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> the lurkers were reading. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> telecom is 90% lurkers. <[Gary] GARY-S> often, they were - or the choir. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> really. <[Gary] GARY-S> You bet ! - Lotssa preaching to the choir <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> that's because we are so un-creative about marketing Forth. <[Gary] GARY-S> what does paleotaurus think ? the feeling was that we were not getting any feedback... remember that i wasn't on a board until recently. i assure you that outside proposals get more attention than ... those for members of the committee. ... i just got basis 8. and we are down to quiblles. bob berkey ... made a lot of proposals. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> I'll bet you VESTA each put the BASIS on line and you'll get more feedback than you know what to do with. You're shutting one of the fastest-growing FORTH communities out of the process.: EUROPE. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> oops. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> start at PUT BASIS ON LINE> i would love it. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> then let's do it. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> FORTRAN did it. uh <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ONE OUTLET. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> GEnie FIG RT!!!!!! <[Gary] GARY-S> GEnie is ONE outlet <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> copyright, no further electronic distribution. the problem we were warned about by ANSi. ... was changes. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> it can be arranged. <[len] NMORGENSTERN> Jax, I cannot see why on-line BASIS would make a great difference <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> len ... right. That's because a lot of people involved in GEne FIG RT don't really grok telecom as she is spoke. E.g. UNDO has been change to UNLOOP, and ASCII and [ASCII] back and CHAR to [CHAR]. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Wil ... ANSI straw dog. I demeurre. CAVEATS in HEADER warn of possible changes, disclaimer of responsibility. <[Gary] GARY-S> That seems a moot argument, Wil, if anyone can acquire the reports ! - I do, and I think it is insulting to presume I'm too ignorant to sort through changes in a dynamic proposla !!!!! DONT pick on me. i'm for it. i'm just giving their reason. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> If you hide your light under a bushel ... :-) <[Gary] GARY-S> Please pass on these comments <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> Wil ... not YOU straw dog! ANSI objection being STRAW DOG! wil do. understood. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> COMMENT was to you. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> sorry! :-) <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ANSI is concerned about its profits, not the quality of our standard. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> if i understand correctly. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> do i ? YES YES YES/ <[Gary] GARY-S> what is ANSI's position as you see it, wil ? disconnected. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> we got him all worked up! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> sigh. <[Gary] GARY-S> Hmmm - ran off another <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> i am a menace. <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> <<< stop him before he flames again! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> currently ... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> involved in telecom flamefest with Tyler Sperry ... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> ansi TC ... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> half of WELL ... we need to be able to stay a little calmer folks <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> why is every body always picking on me? :-)] <[Gary] GARY-S> charlie brown - do-ta-do-ti-do maybe because you pick first??? <[len] NMORGENSTERN> Jax, there was a man who went around with a sign... <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> won't SOMEONE please tell me what DIDDY-WAH-DIDDY means ... :-) <[len] NMORGENSTERN> that said "Don't kick me". He wondered why everybody kicked him! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> i have fun ... BBSes are the greatest video game ever invented! <[Gary] GARY-S> last call do you want some statistics of how we are doing gary? <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> gnite! <[jax] FIGCHAPTERS> has left. <[Gary] GARY-S> post away <[Gary] GARY-S> we will close with them dennis just for the record, while you guys were yelling at each other I put together somethings we could probably disclose if it gets me in trouble, well, I never said it right??? <[Gary] GARY-S> uh-huh is here. just a moment while I post USA Canada Japan Module Hits Prime NonPrime Prime NonPrime Prime NonPrime -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- General 1748 0.34 19.06 0.03 0.58 0.06 0.08 SW LIB 941 0.85 138.72 0.00 1.98 1.05 1.62 BB 329 0.00 38.72 0.00 1.26 0.00 0.01 RTC/TP 25 0.00 16.27 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 Users: 300 B 1200 B 2400 B Total 0 286 40 326 There are about 368 topics in the BB. What an embarrasing ... time to lose carrier. It took me all this time to get back. <[Gary] GARY-S> It's closing time - Push your chairs to the bar, gentlemen Do you still want to know ... what i think about ansi? <[Gary] GARY-S> I'm closing the RTC for tonite - glad it was only lost carrier : -) - next week maybe ( if that meets your approval - or you can do it now <[Gary] GARY-S> ga wil <[len] NMORGENSTERN> Wish I could stay (have to leave just when it's getting really interesting) To me ANSI is a a non profit organiztion whose purpose it to ... make money. ... this money is to cover administrative costs. ... i think that unknown inner circle ... are making out very well. ga <[Gary] GARY-S> Thanks for an honest appraisal - g'nite all === End of Steno notes. ===
