Minutes: is here. hiya gary notice on door = Welcome tro another open FIGGY BAR. B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Belly-aches). Your Forth-tender is Gary. Hi Dennis is here. Cliff Buenos Noches <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Buon giorno! humm, we seem to be a little slow tonight :( <[Wil] W.BADEN1> is here. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Hi Gary, Dennis. Glad to meet you Cliff. Go for it <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Who is supposed to go for what? The floor is open - someone take advantage sorry cliff, some background chit chat is overwheliming at the moment :) <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Have any of you guys met me before? I've joined in ... is here. is here. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> I thought there was only 1 pope. greetings. first time lurker. is here. d.pope could you tell us your first name? Dan type /name Dan then :) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Hi John! Flint Michigan hiya John, wil was here...he'll be back <[John] JDHALL> Hello, everyone and Gary. D.POPE7 type /nam First name ah, how's good old Flint doing these days Dan? ie: /nam Dave or Don or... Thanks Dan thank you Dan...makes it easier :) Who wants to talk about Forth ?????????? Lets party what's that? :) <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> First let me ask Dan: How much Forth do you know? Forth...not partying <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> (A fool and his money are some party) <[Dan] D.POPE7> Very little. Just learning with student version of HS/Forth. How do you like HS Forth ? <[Dan] D.POPE7> So far quite well. Got frustrated trying to get PD system together. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> What's PD ??? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Cliff, you are from Michigan too...where is Berrien springs? Have you needed to call Jim and company for support ? If so how were they ? <[Dan] D.POPE7> Public Domaine ?? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Thanx <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Near Benton Harbor / St. Joe <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> North of Niles. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> PD: Pretty Deficient. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> ah, I know that area, I'm from Kazoo (a few years ago) <[Dan] D.POPE7> Actually trying to learn Forth and MS-DOS at same time. Most experience on Apple //. Quite a change, then <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> What is this? All the programmers with all the words have nothing to say? <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Dan, The Sunday conferences are slanted more towards <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> beginners than this on. Hope you can come then. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> 8:30 Eastern time, every Sunday eve Why did you not go with one of the Apple Forths ? Just curious <[Dan] D.POPE7> OK. Didn't know there was Sunday cnf. What time? Len offers a super forum for questions Dan - I highly recommend you check in next Sunday <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> but don't go away anyways Dan or Cliff. We are a little pre-occupied at the moment, but it is not normally this quiet :) It isn't the rats nest these Thursday FIGGY's are <[Dan] D.POPE7> i do have Master Forth for A2 but HS/Forth has much better editor and documentation and it's time to move on to MS_DOS <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Send me EMail with specific questions if you have them. <[Dan] D.POPE7> I'll try to make it Sunday Master Forth is a decent product, so I certainly appreciate your views. That makes HS sound pretty solid. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> so...a little tid bit of news... <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Elizabeth is off to Sun Microsystems tomorrow.... <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> the X3J14 TC is meeting (at least) one more time... <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> there will be (at least) one more go around on BASIS. Why SUN, besides Mitch is there <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> that was the next scheduled meeting place <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Countrywide rotation. I guess it's the turn of the Bay area <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yes, they had planned it in case the forward to SPARC was not succesful SUN Boot-ROM is rapidly becomming the most widely distributed embedded Forth system in existance - such a strange twsit <[John] JDHALL> Also if there was a NO vote! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> 200 K systems out there!! <[John] JDHALL> I think Bob Berkey probably voted aginst. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> does anyone know what Berkey wants? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> can he be bribed? :) John - I think the <[John] JDHALL> A no vote requires an answer. lacking a better term, open President's office will help FIG. I want to thankk you. <[John] JDHALL> Thanks for the encouragement! I wonder how many of the nay-sayers will read FD though <[John] JDHALL> It seems many do! <[Dan] D.POPE7> Is there still a FIG chapter in South East Michigan ? <[John] JDHALL> But seriously, I think it will help also and I am trying... That _is_ "our" print forum <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> I don't know, Dan <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> no Dan...was there _ever_ one there? <[John] JDHALL> to heal any wounds that are still open without opening others. ... <[John] JDHALL> I am not sure that is possible! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Detroit/Ann Arbor is the only one listed. Is that close enough? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> only 3-4 hours away Len :) <[Wil] W.BADEN1> is here. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Maybe for Dan, but is a major distance for me. <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> rehi wil <[Dan] D.POPE7> 40 minutes from me. Hi again Wil <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> High, Wil <[Wil] W.BADEN1> <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> The chapter chairman is Bill Walters 313 731-9660 <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> or 314 861-6465 (eves) <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> Cliff, living in Kalamazoo is what convinced me that we _needed_ to be on GEnie :) <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> John, somehow I missed the subject you are discussing... <[Dan] D.POPE7> OK. Thats my area code - I'll call him. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> could you explain. <[John] JDHALL> We were talking about the President's letter in Forth Dimensions. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Hi all/sen 2 John did not try to dissuade me. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> The FIG president? <[John] JDHALL> Yes, for the moment that is me. Wil has requested the floor for an announcement ga wil <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Attention, please. I have an important announcement....For the better health and prosperity of the Forth Interest Group...I resign from the FIG Board of Directors....Attention, please. I have an important announcement.... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> For the better health and prosperity of the Forth Interest Group...For the better health and prosperity of the Forth Interest Group ... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I resign from the FIG Board of Directors.... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> I have looked forward to and enjoyed these twice-a-week gatherings... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> and will miss them.... <[Wil] W.BADEN1> Health, Joy, and Peace. <[Wil] W.BADEN1> has left. <[John] JDHALL> Wil and Dennis had informed me of Wil intention... I do wish an explanation had accompanied such an announcement ! <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Same here! <[John] JDHALL> I have reappointed Jack Woehr as the Chapter Coordinator... <[John] JDHALL> As the president, that is my perogative (sp?) and Wil was not happy... <[John] JDHALL> with my decision. Others of the Board of Directors were! <[John] JDHALL> Dennis? <[Dennis] D.RUFFER> yes? <[Dennis [i]] D.RUFFER> are you asking if _I_ and happy with your decision John? <[John] JDHALL> What do any of you think about my decision? <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> I don't know enough about the people to have an opinion. I will reserve comment, except to note Wil's exodus is a loss. <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> agree full heartidly gary ;( <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> What is the bone of contention?.... <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Jack's heart is in the right place and his intentions <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> are good, but he can be very difficult sometimes <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Or is that something too sensitive to be discussed? <[Dan] D.POPE7> HELP: How do I turn Capture on with ALADDIN? <[John] JDHALL> It is a loss and he has help over the years? <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> Dan hit Esc then A :) <[Dan] D.POPE7> M160;1 This will be in a transcript no later than Saturday anyway Dan - look for BAR0502.91 <[Dan] D.POPE7> Thanks Why are you trying to go to the Unix RT Dan ? <[Dan] D.POPE7> don't want to exit. don't know how that happened. new to Genie and aladdin <[John] JDHALL> Can I tell you about Yerk Forth? Not to change the subject. <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> ah, then you did an A in the Unix RT page of Aladdin (I know that one :) <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Isn't Yerk Forth a version used in Sweden? :) <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> Yerk is a Mac Forth (originally Neon) No- Yerk is Neon reprised and cleaned up <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> OIC <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> how's it work John? <[John] JDHALL> Yerk stands for Yerkes as in Yerkes Observatory at U of Chicago. It is the original Object Oriented Language written in Forth, but as Neon lacked garbage collection <[John] JDHALL> Bob Lowenstein got permission to put Yerk in the public domain.. <[John] JDHALL> Yes, it was formarly called Neon. he has brought the version up.... His group were using it at the Observatory and thought their version desreved wider distribution <[John] JDHALL> from 2.2 to now 3.3.2. He ia an astronomer at Yerkes and the Flying Observatory <[John] JDHALL> that flies out of Moffet field in CA. ... Apple users "should" get a copy <[John] JDHALL> I have talked to him and he uses it for all of his observing. ... <[John] JDHALL> As an example, U of Chicago has a "remote" observatory in New Mexico... <[John] JDHALL> and a couple of weeks ago over New Zealand... <[John] JDHALL> he disn't have anything to observe on the plane, so thru modem and ... <[John] JDHALL> internet he was able to control the NM observatory and get pictures which... <[John] JDHALL> he compressed and transmitted to the plane. All this done in Yerk and all... <[John] JDHALL> this communication occured in less than 15 minutes. He has a compression... is here. <[John] JDHALL> technique that can compress and effectively transmit at 37.?K bytes per sec. .. <[John] JDHALL> He does all the programming himself. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Just the kind of thing Forth is good at! <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Forth sure is used for a lot of data aquisitioning... <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Why isn't Forth used for something like account payable? <[John] JDHALL> It is a Forth with Objects and Classes. It is - and insurance actuary tables There are just other tools in wider distribution, and you don't get paranoid about programmer maintenance <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Someone has to write it, Cliff. One of the best Ashton-Tate's Rapid File is written in MMS Forth <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> spreadsheets was written in forth, and was so good <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> that Lotus scuttled it. <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> (What Lotus wants, Lotus gets) <[Dan] D.POPE7> I teach middle school general science and LOGO (and Basic when forced to). Love Logo. Forth seems similar. Would like to teach Forth s omeday. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Is that the real reason why it got scuttled? VP Planner was too intuitive Len - Heck, normal people could use it <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> I doubt that Lotus would have gone after it if it <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> were not so successful. One of the most skilled Forth programmers I know started in Logo, and he totallly agrees with your assessment, Dan <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> What company made the spreadsheet that got scuttled? is here. Stephenson Software in British Columbia <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> Regret that I have to leave. Hope to see you all Sunday! <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> IC: Using the word "scuttled" made it sound like Lotus created it. Hello all. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Hi Jax <[Len] NMORGENSTERN> has left. <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> hiya jack How's Fene^tres, Dennis? Hi Cliff. <[John] JDHALL> Hello, Jack. Hell JD oops <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> Fene^tres???? Hello! ( == Fr. "windows" <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> In other words Gary, Lotus went after another company because the... <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> ah, bitting me every chance it gets :) <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> other companies' product was too much like 1-2-3? (((speaking of windows, jax4th is assembling in another window))) <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> some day jack...some day :) <[John] JDHALL> It was a 1-2-3 clone. It had other features, but it was ment to be a clone ... <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Is Jax5th in a bottle? :) <[John] JDHALL> like many feel 1-2-3 originally was a clone of Visicalc. no, after JAX4TH it's probably going to be JAXLOG <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> I use a 1-2-3 clone called ASEASYAS. It works great! ... <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> It's also written in Turbo Pascal. <[John] JDHALL> There were others that Lotus was after, Forgot the names. <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> jack, to answer your question, pF is running _in_ Windows... <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> but still not running _under_ Windows :( <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> if you know what I mean :) Like, "the mouse is living under the cat" ... you call that living? :-) <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> I'm running on a 9600 baud terminal connected to my AT... no, it is _not_ living yet. <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> ZZZZ Everything about DOS is a pain these days. It's like a 50-year old lady who is pregnant. Guys - I'm closing the steno - get in any last shots, now <[Cliff] C.MORAVETZ1> Pow! <[Dennis [i] D.RUFFER> oh sorry, didn't mean to disterb you Cliff :) You don't know if the next generation is going to be born ... or if the old gal is going to bust first. === End of Steno notes. ===
