Forth for the Atari From the FIG Tree *** TURBO-4TH 6-JAN-85 PARENT=ATARI USAGE=489 Announcing turbo-4th for all Atari computers I have implemented a new version of fig FORTH for the Atari computers. It is compatible with the fig model and Team FORTH (which I wrote to/I-H, all it turbo-4th because it is fast It is at least 2 times faster than other Atari FORTHs because it is not threaded, it is a true compiler. I have written a 96 page manual that attempts to completely describe everything, includes source listings! I intend to support this program, and if there are enough sales set up a turbo-4th bulletin board. The price is($25. plus your local Calif. sales tax (6 1/2% or 6%) plus $2.00 for handling (its a 3 ring binder) Send checks to: turbo-4th c/o Steven R. Calfee 884 Cape Diamond Dr. San Jose, Cal. 95133 *** TEAM-FORTH 6-JAN-8u PARENT=ATARI USAGE=477 YOU CAN GET THE TWO TEAM FORTH DISKS by sending $5 to Bay Area Atari User group c/o John Cr... 5886 Texas Ct. San Jose, Ca. 95120 Also see turbo-4th message here. Steve Calfee *** TEAM-FORTH-RIP-OFF 9-FEB-85 PARENT=ATARI USAGE=403 I RECENTLY PURCHASED TEAM FORTH FROM ANTIC MAGAZINE. WHAT A RIP-OFF! FOR $10.00 I GOT THE fig.FORTH DISK WITH PRACTACALY NO DOCUMENTATION. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT AN ADDITIONAL $20.00 FOR "DISCOVER FORTH" BUt I GET THE FEELING I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BUY TURBO-FORTH OR SOME OTHER IMPLIMEN- TATION TO REALLY GET GOING. CAUTION TO OTHER BEGINNERS, DON'T BUY AN INFERIOR FORTH! *** MvP-FOR-ATARI 15-FEB-85 PARENT=TEAM-FORTH-RIP-OFF USAGE=378 I think MVP (Mountain View Press) might sell a Forth for the Atari ... i'd suggest getting a Forth '83 or Forth '79 model, if you are considering getting a ST (68000 atari) when it comes out, that's what will be avalable. *** NO-RIP-OFF 5-MAY-85 PARENT=ATARI USAGE=280 YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. $10.00 AIN'T BAD, EVEN IF YOU CAN GET IT FROM A.B.A.C.U.S. OR BAAUG FOR $5.00. THE ANITIC TEAM FORTH DISK DOES HAVE SOME NICE THINGS. HOWEVER, TURBO-4TH. IS A MUCH BETTER DEAL. DAVE & DRAKE FROM K.C., CA *** O.S.ATARI 18-OCT-85 PARENT=ATARI TSAGE=124 I have QS forth with which I have never experimented much because, after being "turned on" by descriptions og the wonders of forth, I was "turned off" by the reality of the lack of compatibility to the great ATARI operating system. I would like to try some thyng in forth but can't bring myself to part with the convenient ATARI file structures. Is there a "fix" for this in the forth world? *** SURPRISED0 19-OCT-85 PARENT=O.S.ATARI USAGE=121 I don't know OS forth or the Atari machine, but I am surprised that you can't get your Forth to handle files. One of the powers of Forth is that you can write in assembler or high-level according to your needs, and link thum all together in a natural way. When you mention "Atari File Structure", possibly you are talking about BASIC and not about operating system calls. In that case, your complaint is legitimate. When a BASIC is written for a given machine, many useful features are includy graphics, sound, etc., are also implemented if the computer has those features. It is regrettable that vendors will omit these from the Forth that they sell. There are two excuses: One is that Forth traditionally has used a virtual memory method of file handling (i. e. blocks), which has a lot of advantages. Second, writing a text-file handler is a lot of work and involves a number of arbitrary choices. There are exceptions. I just purchased Micromotion Master Forth for the IBM and it has facilities for block, text, and data files. There must be many others. You should write the maker of O.S.Forth to see whether they can help you. Meanwhile, some user of this board mqy be able to assist you. *** FORTH-RUN-BBS 29-DEC-85 PARENT=ATARI USAGE= 50 For those who don't mind calling Long Distanke, here is an Atari run BBS written in FORTH. 215-630-9149 The sysop there wrote it.
