FORTH ON HP COMPUTERS From the FIG Tree *** HP 22-OCT-84 PARENT=SYSTEMS USAGE=367 Has any one used the FORTH module for the HP-71B? Ifso, what is your opinion of it?? The module also sontains an Assembler (Hence the name FORTH/Assembly> written in FORTH to allow extensions to the FORTH operating system (new primitives) and Language EXtension files (new keywords) to the Basic operating system. The module has the ability to use a Dumb-Terminal as the HP-71's keyboard and display devices with an HP-IL/rS232 Converter making it a suitable development system for application software. all internal documentation is avaliable for sale through Hewlett-Packard ! *** HP110-FORTH 17=DEC-84 PARENT=HP USAGE=269 There is an implementation of FORTH for the HP110 in the XA1 database of the Interex SIG on Compuserve. Although I have not used it, other users seemed pleased. Intend to download it after the first of the year; will report back here. (Note: fee is VERY reasonable) More details to follow... Thanks for the Tree. -Wes Erickson *** NOTE-ON-71B-FORTH 10-MAR-85 PARENV=HP USAGE=197 SOME COMMENTS ON HP71B FORTH/ASSEMBLER MODULE: 71B R: NIBBLE -ORIENTED MACHINE WITH 20-BIT ADDRESSES. FORTH ON 71 IS A 20-BIT IMPLEMENTATION. SEVERAL NIBBLE WORDS ARE PROVIDED TO ADDRESS THIS CAPABILITY, SUCH AS NALLOT, N@, N!, ,NFILL,NMOVE,5+(INCR ADDR BY 5), 5-(DECR ADDRESS BY 5). FORTH BLOCKS OR SCREENS ON THE 71 ARE STANDARD TEXT FILES, AND CAN HAVE UP TO 96 CHARACTERS PER LINE, WITH AS MANY LINES AS YOU LIKE. FULL FLOATING POINT OPERATOR USES NATIVE BASIC SYSTEM ROUTINE FOR EVALUATION OF ANY FORTH NUMBERS WiTH DECIMAL POINTS. CONFORMS WELL WITH 83 STD. IF YOU AREN'T INTERESTED IN THE ASSMMBLER, CONSIDER GETTING THE "TURBO-41" PACKAGE FROM EDUCALC (800-633-2252). PLUG-IN ROM INCLUDES HP-71 EMULATOR AND TRANSLATOR FOR HP41 PROGRAMS, WITH ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS, AND A SIMILAR FORTH IMPLEMENTATION TO HP'S ROM. COST IS 30$ LESS THAN HP ROM. SEE DESCR IN CHHHU CHRONICLE, V2N1 JAN/FEB'85, ARTICLE BY WILLIAM WICKES, WHO PROGRAMMED THE MODULE. -SCOTT T. SCHAD, TULSA, OK. *** HPSERIES-80-FORTH PARENT=HP USAGE=184 In an upcoming issue probably May/June) of PROFESSMONAL COMPUTING magazine, for HP-pc user's, writer Don Person will be devoting his column to a letter I wrote concerning FORTH implementations for HPSeries-80 computers. The main FORTH (and almost the only one) used for series 80 comes from the HP-User's Library, and has several drawbacks, notably its inability to load when there are enhancement ROMs (like the Advanced Programming or I/O ROMs) in the machine. In response to my letter, Mr. Person contacted the original authors of the HP80-FORTH binary, and learned they had since CODED A ROM-BASED VERSION OF FORTH, WHICH COULD BE CARRIED IN A SERIES-80 EPROM MODULE. Mz. Person obtained the code, and is considering burning-out some CHEAP FORTH EPROMS ($30), IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT INTEREST (READ "SUFFICIENT LETTERS" FOLKS...). Person has already tried out a preliminary EPROM, and reports that it is fully COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER ADDED ENHANCEMENT ROMS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE A ROM-BASED FORTH ON YOUR SERIES 80 COMPUTER, OR KNOW OF A SERIES 80 USER WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED, PLEASE CONTACT: DON PERSON, A GENTLE WIND, INC., BOX 3103, ALBANY, NY 12203---OR CALL (518-482-9023)--TO LET HIM KNOW THERE IS A MARKET FOR FORTH-EPROMS, AND THAT THERE ARE INDEED MANY HP USERS INTERESTED IN FORTH --Scott T. Schad, Tulsa, OK. *** HP80-4TH-FOLLOWUP 15-APR-85 PARENT=HPSERIES-80-FORTH USA\T A further note on Forth for Hp 85,86,87 computers. I have obtained the Forth eproms for the HP 86/87. Both work fine and let you recover a lot of low memory. Cost is $30 from Don Person, c/o PROFESSIONAL COMPUTING, Camden Communications Ins., P.O. Box 250, Camden, Maine zip: 04843. The implementation is very standard FIG model, so you wil| probably want to order the Series 80 User's Library for $50, in order to get the utility screens and some documentation. Address is: Hewlett-Packard Co., Series 80 User's Library, 1000 N.E. Circle Blvd., Corvallis, OR 9736. Remember that this is not a plug-in ROM for the ROM drawer, but an eprom which must live in the series 80 eprom holder. If you have trouble installing the eprom, contact Don Person, or me: Scott T. Schad, 3943 S. Delaware Pl., Tulse, OK 74105, (918)-747-0207. Work phone: 742-0019.
