The Institute of Computer Language at TU-Wien, Faculty of Computer Science, performs teaching and research in the areas of implementation, verification, application of programming languages. Main research areas comprise implementation techniques for efficient interpreters and compilers, development tools for embedded systems, data flow analysis, type systems, and concurrent programming.
A.o. Univ. Prof. Dr. Eva Kühn is the head of the "Space Based Computing" group at this institute . The objective of this group is to develop, establish and promote an innovative architecture paradigm for parallel and distributed programming that is based on the principles of a virtually shared data space. Current activities concern the development of Open Source software in this area. Main research issues concern agile middleware architectures, software development methodologies, and collaboration patterns with a special focus on SBC.

underground_8 is the producer of Gibraltar firewall, a professional security gateway product line. To this day, Gibraltar is used by over 1000 companies, organizations and private users to secure their IT networks. Gibraltar firewall is based on Linux and other open source components and can be executed either from a live CD-ROM or USB image or is shipped pre-installed on custom hardware appliances. With developing the Gibraltar firewall products, underground_8 establishes itself with expert knowledge in all fields of IT security, network protocol analysis, and embedded systems development.
