How to install Mosaic-2.7b5 for X

X-Mosaic 2.7b5 is the version I recommend, although it is labeled beta. Its main advantage over 2.6 is that you can turn off table support (which works neither in 2.6 nor 2.7b5 in a satisfactory way). It also has some nice minor new features, and in my experience, it is about as stable as 2.6 (i.e., it crashes, but rarely).

Get the source code (unless there is a binary for your platform, which makes the rest unnecessary; here you can find a Linux/Alpha binary).
Get a Motif-compatible library, e.g., lesstif. I used lesstif-0.87.9.
The first thing to do is to ignore the installation instructions in Mosaic's README; they are not up-to-date.
Apply my patch to get rid of some errors in the source (I wonder how they ever got it to compile). The line to do this would be

zcat mosaic-2.7b5.diff.gz|patch -p0
```
Type configure --help to see the installation options.
Type configure options. I first tried to include PNG support, but that resulted in a link error (maybe my libpng was incompatible with the one wanted by Mosaic); if you don't use --with-pngdir, don't specify --with-zdir, either. If you don't specify everything, configure will ask you whether you want to stop it; answer "no". I used configure --with-x --with-jpegdir=/usr.
You may want to inspect config.h. I fixed it to declare MOTIF1_2 instead of MOTIF1_1.
Now type make.
If everything goes allright, there will be a binary src/Mosaic. Try it. If it works, install it in /usr/local/bin (or whereever you like it).
If you want to start again (from the configure step), type make -f makefiles/Makefile.linux clean.
