Some glxgears results

It is often claimed that glxgears is not a benchmark, but the reality is that it is. It may not be particularly representative of useful 3D programs, however. On the other hand, glxgears has been available for several decades, and has done pretty much the same thing across these decades, so it gives us a way to compare hardware from wildly different times. And it measures at least the fill rate and to a certain extent also the triangle processing capability.

Default size

The default size of glxgears is 300x300 (has it always been that size?). By running it with
vblank_mode=0 glxgears
we get FPS numbers. Here are some numbers I have measured:
  fps  CPU; GPU; comments
 34500 Ryzen 8700G (Zen4); Ryzen 8700G (Radeon 780M); 100% CPU usage at 4700MHz in the glxgears thread; Eco Mode: 61W power limit
 13400 Core i5-6600K; Radeon HD6770
 12500 Core i5-1135G7 (Tiger Lake); Core i5-1135G7 (Iris Xe 80EUs); 12W power limit, Wayland
  6295 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon X850XT
  5424 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon X800GTO
  3800 Core 2 Duo 8400; Radeon X1650 Pro
  3775 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon 9600XT
  3500 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon 9250 (AGP); with "hyperz=true"
  2888 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon X550
  2358 Athlon 64 3200+; Radeon 9600 (AGP)
  2185 PPC7447A 1066MHz; Mobile Radeon 9200; iBook G4
  1500 Atom 330; GeForce 9400M (Nvidia Ion); proprietary driver
Numbers from X11 unless otherwise noted.

Further experiments indicate that the 8700G is CPU limited at the default size; increasing the size of the window does not reduce the FPS up to 320x320; only at 330x330 do I see a reduction in FPS.

For more numbers see the archived version of www.free3d.org.

1000x1000

To avoid problems with CPU limits, one can increase the window size, and here are results for 1000x1000, measured with
vblank_mode=0 glxgears -geometry 1000x1000
The result is, of course, even more fill-rate dominated that the default size.
  fps  CPU; GPU; comments

  4920 Core i5-1135G7 (Tiger Lake); Core i5-1135G7 (Iris Xe 80EUs); 12W power limit, Wayland
