Status: OR Hi everyone, just mailing you to tell you all that the characters are all finalised. All I have to do is transfer them to my personal (excellently designed) character sheets and decide on each characters magic items. We'll probably have our first turn on Monday. A few formal comments : - Game turns will be sent out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights (Aust- ralian time - I think I'm about 15 - 16 hours ahead of New York, making the turn mailout there about 7 a.m. on each relevant day. You can probably work out your times from there. - I will only send out a game turn if the party's decision is definite. For example, if there is a debate amongst the players about what course of action to take, the game turn will only be sent after : 1 : The decision is agreed upon or 2 : The party splits up. - You may, if you wish, elect a spokesperson, who will be the final arbitrator of events (I discourage this, as it makes one player more important than the others and detracts from the fun) - If you decide that you don't like playing, then by all means tell me, and we can arrange a peaceful removal. (I hope that this will never happen as it can only mean that I've FAILED in my task :-( ) - I encourage the sending of your charaters decisions to the other players as well as myself. For instance, if we reach a passage and can go left or right, I want to be able to have the players work it out amongst themselves without becoming a go-between. The mail addresses for the players are : Prometheus : thedm@leland.Stanford.EDU Te-rasti : IO01108@MAINE.maine.edu Taufee : sinari@snakemail.hut.fi Brevan : vjg@cblph.att.com Elhmo : gt6441c@prism.gatech.edu Torgan : le_gued@euterpe.cert.fr Junior : jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com We also have an observer (someone who recently DM'ed this module and is interested in how you all handle the problems that I'm going to throw you into) His address is : alex@mips.complang.tuwien.at.at (He will _not_ give you hints if you mail him, so forget it!). I'll be mailing the turns out to him as well as you. If you want, mail him to see if he wants to see your mails to me and the others. If anyone needs any help in setting up aliases for their mail system, I'll see what I can do (this is a bit easier than entering every mail address every time you want to post to the game). If it isn't possible for you to post to everyone, then the other players should be able to work out your decision by what I say in the next turn. - by now you probably know my email address (wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au) Since we've still got a few days until we get started, I thought that it might be a good idea to share a little bit about ourselves. This is what I have planned... A brief paragraph describing what you want everyone to know about your character in the game. Who you are in real life and what you do (if you don't mind telling us). I'll start the ball rolling by giving you an example : In the game, I play an omnipotent entity that controls the entirety of existence, save for 7 sould that exist on this puny world. My goal is to crush these irritations (only kidding!). Being all in one, I play characters of all races, all classes and all types. In real life, my name is Michael Wright. I was born in and live in Melbourne, Australia. I'm currently doing a degree in Computer Science (3rd year for the 2nd time). When I'm not ruling the world I like to play video games, see my girlfriend and go to dance parties. My favourite TV show is 'Married, with Children.' If any of you can think of any details that I've left out of this (lengthy) post, then please tell me, and I'll send out an 'errata' like all good 2nd Edition people do (the TSR way!) So if you could respond with a "received" I'll know I can reach you. I've heard from Jukka, Jon and Yannick. My name is Joe Carl and I'm a 29 year old Electrical Engineer with Harris Corp. I'm living in Melbourne, Florida. About 30 miles south of the Kennedy Space Station. I'm married and have a 10 month old son. I graduated from The Ohio State Universtiy 5 years ago with a masters. I'm really a hardware designer but lately have been writing real time development software for some cards I built. I'm currently building a new home and working way too much overtime! I like playing any kind social game, reading books, and playing rpg's. My characters name is Junior Jones. He's a halfing archeologist. He's extremely intelligent and wise. He's easily flabbergasted and likes to think of himself as in charge of things. He's not! He will be easily distracted and most likely will make a good straight man if there's a commedian in our group. He is 2' 10" tall and has curly blonde hair with hazel eyes. He worships Boccob and is very devote. If you pray with him, he will heal you of your wounds most of the time. Here is a little bit of his background. Life has never been easy for me. Being the most intelligent halfling in my village was cause for much ridicule. Since I was the least dextrous of halflings I was not accepted into any thieving guilds for trainig. And Since I am relatively weak compared to most others in my village, I was laughed at when I applied to the militia for training as a warrior. In my mind I was an outcast in my own village. So at about the age of 20, I set off for the city Greyhawk. Being mostly a country boy I quickly got lost. Somehow I ended up near the Theological College, where I met Professor Comatosa, one of the most interesting men I have ever met. Professor Comatosa took a liking to me and saw something very unusual in me, so he said. For one thing I was the only student that stayed awake during his lectures. The professor took me under his wing and taught me the trade of archaeology. During my studies, I learned the art of decoding all sorts of languages. The professor taught me of the perils of traps usually found in catacombs and lost cities. He also taught me some very special techniques for archaeological research, Although my skill laid in different disciplines, he taught me well. On one of my latest information gathering trips near the jungles of the Hellfurnace, I found the skeletal remains of one of the jungles victims. So close to civilization, yet not close enough. The jungle can be a creul place to be. I searched the body for some clue as to who should be notified for a proper burial. I found a small carved idol clutched in his hand with a scrap of parchment wrapped around it. The parchment turned out to the fragment of a map indicating a lost city. Obviously the map was of historical significance, so I did not forward it to the next of kin like I did with the rest of his belongings, minus a few gold for expenses of course. After assembling a party of adventurers to follow the map, I and my my fellow explorers set out into the unexplored territory to find a lost city. That's how I find my self in this god forsaken jungle. But sill I push on through the humid, insect infested, loud and obnoxiously green Hell. But Oh, the riches to be discovered. Plus if you would like to know more about little ol' me, then I could send you my "finger", and we could become life long friends..... anyway, Heeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrre's Prometheus!!! *************** CHARACTER'S NAME: Prometheus Cornelius ShadowFlare PLAYER'S NAME: Marcus Trevino RACE: Grey Elf AL: Chaotic Good CLASS: Ranger/Mage Prometheus ShadowFlare is the Grandson of the famous Elfin Armorer Cornelius ShadowFlare. Cornelius is famous throughout the elfin nations as the innovative mind behind the ShadowStalker Armor. An extraordinary maker of elfin chain, Cornelius developed a method by which elfin chain and black studded leather armor, obtained from wild bulls, were masterfully combined so that the elite Rangers of the Elfin Elders could manuever with as little encumbrance and as little sound as possible. The Armor, known Simply as ShadowStalkers, weighs slightly more than elfin chain but considerably less than normal studded leather. ShadowStalker offers maximum protection as well as maximum movement. The concept behind the armor is rather simple. Cornelius created an endoskeleton for the special studded leather, it is imperative that the leather is made from wild bull, for the skin of wild bulls is the strongest form of leather as well as the most supple. The endoskeleton is a reinforcement made of elfin chain that adds little, if anything to the encumbrance of the armor. At major appendages, such as the joints of the elbows and knees, blackened elfin chain is clearly visible. Cornelius used elfin adamantite in the construction of the ShadowStalkers for the Elder's elite Ranger Unit. The armor also come with an attached Hooded Cloak that is also reinforced with elfin chain. If used as a shield, it bestows the AC benefits of a buckler shield, an improvement of one. However, the main reason behind the development of the cloak is not so that a Ranger could use it as a shield. It was developed so that a Ranger's Back would be protected from the back attacks of Drow. Legend has it that the cloak cannot be cut or sliced by ordinary edged weapons, nor can it be pierced with ordinary pikes, spears, and the such. Many claim that it takes a weapon of Superiour Quality, and possibly magical enchantment, to sever the cloak. Prometheus, as he was called by his father ( his Grandfather called him Cornelius) had the good fortune to be taught both in the ways of magic as well as in the ways of Being a Ranger. Although his love for armor- making slightly edged his love for magic, both loves drove him furiously and he soon began to develop a tremedous reputation among his peers as one who was as quick with tongue as he was with the sword. He also had to deal with two different environments. While learning with his Grandfather, Prometheus was spoiled beyond belief. Anything his heart desired he received, so long as he was with his Grandfather. His Father was a different story. Azmandies believed in diligence and hardwork and totally despised lack of discipline. Cornelius taught Prometheus to let his emotions guide him. Cornelius believed that an elf's emotion could cause him to achieve feats and accomplishments far beyond those of normal elfin abilities. Prometheus began to accept the teachings of his GrandFather more than that of his father, and his father began to look upon Prometheus as a young lad who needed discipline, thus it was decided, without the consent of Cornelius or Prometheus, that he would be sent to the Elfin Military Acadamy, where Azmandies hoped Prometheus would learn discipline. Since his Grandfather was one of the most wealthy and influential elves in all of the elfin kingdoms, Cornelius had it arranged that Prometheus would accelerate while at the acadamy. Although saddened at the fact that his beloved grandson was going way, Cornelius was also heartened by the fact that his grandson would learn the entricacies of combat. Azmandies too wielded great power in the elfin nation and had it arranged that Prometheus would be learned in the arts of magic while he was at the acadamy. Azmandies said in not so many terms, that Prometheus' stay at the acadamy was to emphasize Discipline, NOT only combat, and that his studies of magic must not be interupted. So Prometheus was also an apprentice to the elfin mage known as Master. That was 7 elf years ago, the equivalent of 70 human years, and now Prometheus graduated from the acadamy; in the top 5% of his class acadamically, and in the top 5% of fighters, Prometheus never outgrew his brash and emotion driven behavior. As a graduation gift from Cornelius, Prometheus received a custom made version of his GrandFathers famous Armor, ShadowStalker. His GrandFather spared no expense in the preparation of ShadowStalker; for while Prometheus was at the acadamy, Cornelius would come on daily visits to teach Prometheus the craft of armor Making. Prometheus became very skilled in the production of leatherworks as well as armoring. ShadowStalker signified Cornelius' best effort as an armorer. ShadowStalker was made with the finest adamantite elfin chain as well as the hide of the legendary wild bull, El Terror. The Cloak was crafted out of the finest combination of elfin cloth and silk. This armor is Prometheus' most prized possesion for after Teaching Prometheus the art of producing elfin chain, Cornelius moved on to the second elfin world. Azmandies gave his son Cornelius' famed Black Marble ring, which Cornelius received from the lair of the Tyrantical Ancient Green Dragon, Elphias. While at the acadamy, Prometheus also became very proficient with all forms of hilted blades. He also learned the ways of the Ranger, and became very adept with a blade in each hand, one a longsword and the other a shortsword. His incredible Dexterity allowed him to master the florentine weapon style with little effort. Conversations with his Grandfather, influenced his hatred of ogres in parti- cular. So much, that he considers all ogres to be his arch nemesis. It was the attack of Ogres that forced Cornelius to leave the ranks of the elfin elite unit of Rangers, and focus his abilities to armoring. His Father is very upset with Prometheus' decision to forego a total commitment to Magic and has thus expelled his son from the family, although with a heavy heart. Prometheus is now considered Displaced, and any noble elfs will first look upon him as a traitor to his class, although they might change their minds if they get to know him. Prometheus' one fatal flaw is his unyeilding devotion and dedication to all those who are oppressed, and he will break and bend the laws of the land in order to try and ease their oppression. And Once Prometheus has befriended someone, he will stick with them through thick and thin, and will fight to the death for those he cares for. That'd explain my mistakes and my accent... About the magic items and all the like, it's up to you now. I hope you'll answer soon... Email Michael and have him send you my background as that will probably be faster. I would have sent it originally but there was a typo in your address. Sorry about the delay. Sean. The parchment is in very good condition. Considering the weather that it has been exposed to here in the jungle, it can't be more than a few years old. Still, the elements have taken their toll on the map, and only a few sections of it remain. The following descriptions detail the two larger sections that remain quite legible. The first section begins the map. It looks as if Ketts rapids is depicted here by a picture of the towns totem pole. The Utdoo river is then shown leading down South into the jungle. A branch of the river is shown, followed by a picture of a feather. A few more river branches, then some squiggle in the river course (possibly rapids). The next branch shows a very large squiggle. After this, a picture of a bush and a mouth follows. Then a picture of some stairs leading to a path. After this comes a Wall, followed by what seems to be flat, sparse land. Steps then lead off the edge of this scrap. The next section of map is quite strange. It depicts some stairs leading from under the ground to emerge from the western side of a string of mountains. The mountain range is shown, but the most unusual picture on this piece is that of a huge, thin mountain and a drawing of treasure underneath it. DM here. Unfortunately for me, my "Tikul's map" has been lost over the years (knew it was stupid to cut it out). I will mail you immediately with my description of the map (to the best of my memory). Could you please return any comments on it or corrections to me? Also, do you think that I should give them the second section of map immediately or leave in in the wind walkers passage somewhere. Giving it to them from the start sort of tells them that they are going to the Sea of Dust, but do you think that the game will be better if they do or don't know this? Thankyou very much for the corrections. Actually, I'll just slightly edit this post you've sent me and use that for the map descriptions. Michael. Ready? Status: OR I've just sent out each person's magical item. If any of you don't have access to the DMG and can't work out what your item does, mail me and I'll give you the description in the DMG. There are one or two minor things that I'm waiting on from a couple of players (names witheld for their safety). I think that they should be in by the time that I'm scheduling turn 1 (that's Monday). Just before I mail out turn 1 I'll also send a description of the map you have. This message won't have a subject line, as I can't seem to include subject lines when I mail out files. Just a last note on style of play. Unless I'm barraged with complaints, I'm going to mail out the hit points gained lost by you and the enemies during combat (eg Torgan hits with his sword, digging into the [insert your favourite monster here]'s side and drawing blood (3 h.p.). The beast's talons rake Torgan's chest however, leaving a set of bloody gashes behind (4 h.p.). In this (not so good) example, Torgan has hit something for 3 hit points damage and has been hit in return for 4 points. Note that since Torgan won initiative in the round, his description came first. This way you can work out amongst yourselves who is about to die and who can last out a while longer. You don't have to tell anyone how many hit points you actually have, so your 'close to death' status can remain a secret if you wish. If you wish to perform a secret action that you don't want the party to know about then put the word 'SECRET' at the top of your post. Lastly, a small request. When mailing me, could you please put the name of your character at the beginning of the post? This is just so I don't have to think too hard about which addresses correspond to which characters (yes, I'm lazy). Okay, I think that's it. See you in 24 hours! Michael.
