His eyes glaze over for a short time, then he looks confused. He is too late however, to stop his warriors from their next surge toward you. The warriors attack from their mounts again, hitting Te-rasti and Elhmo once, and Torgan and Junior twice (damages are : Te-rasti 1, Elhmo 6, Torgan 5 and 4, Junior 4 and 2). Torgan lashes out with his sword, striking home with the edge of the blade (2 points damage). Although this warrior has now taken two hits from Torgan, he still stands. Elhmo stands as tall as he can muster his little body, and shouts "Behold!". With a little deft sprinkling of some powder on the ground and his staff, the dusty ground seems to burst open with a spring of fresh water. The dust soon becomes a mire of mud, and the warriors all stare at the sight with mouths agape. Aratek seems to be at a loss to say anything for a moment, but manages to eventually say "Capture them all, but do not kill them, especially not the provider of the riches!" Junior stands still, either thinking very hard, or concentrating on a spell of some sort. He soon breaks out into a smile, and readies his sling to defend himself properly now. Brevan strikes out at another foe with the flat of his blade. The task of trying not to kill someone by using a deadly weapon is difficult however, and Brevans first try misses. Te-rasti tries his luck with his longsword. A hit square in the chest with a longsword (8 points damage) sees the poor Hek tribesman into the afterlife. Brevan swings his longsword again, hoping to strike out more accurately this time. He manages a very narrow miss, probably due to the fact that he has to pull his swing slightly to avoid hitting with the blades edge. The Hek still seem intent on capturing you all, especially Elhmo, but Arateks seemingly sudden change of order from killing you to capturing you can easily be explained by Taufee... Their dull eyes stare out across the wasteland. With a grating sound, a gate in the wall swings slowly open. Swirling dust dances through, then settles as the gate swings closed with an ominous 'thunk'. The wall is about 20 feet high. "I sense no danger from these warriors on the wall. Let us look at the gateway." Not all of you are entirely convinced by the words of the little halfling, but no reaction comes from the battlements as you approach. The gateway is open, and all it takes to open it is a firm push. You enter the gate and pass through into what must have once been a town of some sort. Once-fine buildings line the sides of this desolate street. From somewhere comes the echoing sound of a door banging. Through the open doors and windows you see that the buildings are nothing more than empty shells. Any floors and roofs they once possessed have long since collapsed. You move through this desolate town which is situated in a canyon blocked off by the battlements now behind you. The canyon is small, and follows northward. You move up to the end of the canyon. Before you lies a low stone wall which has collapsed in several places. On both sides of the wall the dust has been blown into numerous long mounds. Across a grimy yard, beyond the wall, rises a temple entrance. Junior speaks up again. "I sense no immediate danger. Taufee has managed to turn most of the undead behind you. With a little effort, you could cut this battle down to one front rather than two. Junior has a couple of small scratches, Torgan is seriously injured, Elhmo is similarly near deaths door, Taufee has a couple of minor wounds, Brevan one gash in the side, but not too serious, and Te-rasti is scored with several cuts that, while not serious on their own, could add up to a lot of trouble for him. These creatures are quick! One at the back takes a swipe at Torgan and one at the front goes for Brevan. Fortunately both miss due to their haste. Taufee swings her quarterstaff around aiming at the heads of one of these shambling beings. It whistles past harmlessly, and the creature moves ever onward. At the same time the other creature at the back of the party claws into Elhmo, rending him horribly (3 points damage). Elhmo looks like he is in severe trouble. He is still standing, but only just. One of the front ones hits Junior and digs its claws well into the poor little halflings chest (6 points damage). Junior still seems well enough for the moment to survive however. Torgan meets one of the creatures at the back with the short sword that he found recently. Its blade is still true, and the beast is relieved of an arm (5 points damage). It still advances. Another one of the creatures attacks Junior, but its claws scrape harmlessly off Juniors skin! Another attack made at Brevan misses. The creatures seem persistent though and don't seem to mind leaving themselves open to counterattack. This could be to your favour given a good defensive position. Elhmo comes out of the shock of being clawed half to death and tries to make a last ditch attack at the creature. The toll of the injury is apparent however, and the Gnome cannot manage to hit his attacker with his spear. Te-rasti is attacked up at the front, but manages to avoid the clumsy claw. Brevan swings his sword out, nearly striking Junior and Te-rasti to his side. His blow tells deeply on the creature in front of him however (7 points damage) and the creature stumbles back. One of its fellows attacks Te-rasti in return, and is successful in gaining purchase on the nimble elf. Its claws rend Te-rasti horribly (5 points) and when it dumps Te-rasti back to the ground, he does not move. You can see that blood is freely flowing from his many wounds, and that if attention is not paid to these wounds quickly, Te-rasti could quite well die! Junior almost forgets one of his opponents in the panic, and is almost struck again, but fortunately the opponent he faces is more clumsy than the one that faced Te-rasti. Screaming in rage, Junior strikes out at the creature with his flail and hits (7 points damage). The creature moves back out of range to look for another angle, seemingly unconcerned about its injury. Brevan makes another attempt at the creature that still stands before him. His blade strikes true again (7 points damage) and the monster drops at his feet, unmoving. You now face 6 of these creatures at the front (3 of which are wounded) and 2 at the back (1 is wounded). Elhmo is near collapsing and Te-rasti is unconcious and bleeding. I would recommend a rest between this fight and going into the temple :-) Michael. Three of the warriors from the front come at Brevan and Junior in a rush. Brevan manages to move out of the way of one of them, but the other two grab hold of Junior and begin to tear him apart! (5 points and 7 points damage). Junior screams, and faints from the pain. By the time these things release their hold, Junior drops to the ground, unmoving. It appears that he may still live, if only Taufee can come in time! Taufee chants over Te-rasti, but Norebo's whims do not favour her in healing today. Perhaps he'd like to see these things destroyed first... Nevertheless, Taufee managed to bind Te-rasti's wounds to prevent further loss of blood. Torgan hacks away at the creature that he has faced so far. The sword tells again, and the creature is reduced to a pile of rotten flesh and bone (7 points damage). Another of the creatures at the front attacks Brevan, but does not manage to make it past the brawny warriors defences. Brevan desperately tries to keep these hordes at bay to protect those comrades of his that have fallen already. The creature that has faced Elhmo moves in again for the kill, but is momentarily distracted by the slaughter of its fellow beside it. Elhmo takes the opportunity to dance to one side, careful not to cause more injury to his wounds. The creature advances now on both Torgan and Elhmo, who can now both attack it at the same time. Brevan attacks the creature that faces him. It has caused more than enough trouble, and the glory of this battle is quickly fading from sight. Now it is simply a matter of survival. The creature is too slow to get out of the way of Brevans mighty swing, and is struck full in the side (5 points damage). It drops to the ground too, victim of too many wounds. The fifth of the front creatures attacks Brevan again, but is unable to get close enough due to the body of its kin being in the way. It shambles around to get to the side of it. The last, seeing that Junior is no threat to it, moves aside and advances too on Brevan... The situation now : Elhmo (critically injured) and Torgan (healthy) face one creature from behind. As yet it is uninjured. Brevan faces 5 of these monstrosities from the front, two of which are injured. 3 of these 5 are moving around to try to get at Taufee, who is trying to take care of both Te-rasti and Junior who are lying on the ground unconcious. Things are beginning to look REALLY bad, but what's this glowing that's starting to surround Taufee? Michael. The staff strikes the creature square in the chest, and the thing literally explodes with energy. Nothing remains of it. Brevan is spurred on by this sight, and lashes out at one of the group that still advances on you all. Both Brevan and this thing attack at the same time, and both blows tell. Brevan takes 4 points of damage while the creature takes 9 from the razor sharp blade of the warrior standing before it. It still stands, as does Brevan. Another creature attacks Brevan too, and claws its way past his armor. The wound is only slight (2 points) but it nevertheless must be looked at before becoming infected by the rotting flesh of this creature from beyond the grave. Torgan is attacked by one of the encircling enemy, and manages to easily sidestep the clumsy efforts of the thing. Another of the creatures has managed to make its way to Taufee. It strikes out at her. Although the blow misses, its arm comes into contact with the glowing blue sphere that surrounds her, and the creature explodes in blue light. Once again, no trace of it can be found. Taufee glows even brighter now. Torgan attacks the thing that has come around to encircle you all again. His new short sword is especially keen today! Another hit makes your spirits soar (7 points of damage). The last of the original creatures that were attacking the back now moves into attack Elhmo, who seems to be swaying a little. The small gnome can't get out of the way of the fist of this thing in time, and is smashed down into the ground. When he does not move to get up, you realise that you have one more party member to care for before making your assualt on this temple, if you even want to attempt this folly at all! Brevan strikes out again at the creature that he hit before, and finishes off what he started. The creature falls to the ground, victim to another mighty swing from this longsword of destruction (7 points damage). Situation : Taufee is still glowing. Brevan and Torgan are still up. On the ground are Elhmo, Te-rasti and Junior. Only two of the creatures remain. One is at the rear moving to attack Torgan while the other is at the front being engaged by Brevan. I really don't appreciate the humor if this is dues paid!" Junior's voice cracks in his excitement and he stops to control his breathing. "I don't like it That's all." Here we go again.] The two creatures that now face you seem to be a little slow in attacking this round. Two crushing blows from Brevan and a touch from Taufee are all it takes to destroy these threats. Taking stock of the situation, you realise that Te-rasti, Elhmo and Junior will all live, thank goodness. The glow from around Taufee fades and you can all hear a faint chuckle, though it is impossible to tell the direction that this is coming from. Closer inspection of your three friends reveals that each of them has something very peculiar about them. They all have one six sided die each in their mouths. The dice are identical, all made of what appears to be a golden stone. Every side of the dice is marked as a '6' though... Taufee feels exhausted, and almost immediately falls into a deep sleep. Brevan and Torgan drag her away to the side of the wall, and tend to their friends. Eventually, the others manage to regain conciousness. You decide to move to one of the abandoned buildings and rest there. Taufee is still out cold, so you move her carefully, and set up base. Your wounds were all very severe, and it will take time for you all to fully fix yourselves up. It takes a couple of days for you all to feel nearly 100% again. Taufee woke up on the morning after the battle, with only vague recollections of what had happened. After using healing magic and good old natural rest, you manage to regain enough energy to feel confident about trying the temple proper. After all, surely that must have been the temples main defence? [Game terms : you are all at full health minus 3 hit points.] It is the third morning after the battle. All of you have memorized spells and prepared weapons [differences in spells, please mail me. If you aren't sure, send a full spell list]. The temple looms in front of you. There has been no disturbance since the battle. What would you like to do? Michael.
