The room here is almost identical to the one that you just left, except that there is a large amount of rock (lava flow as determined by Elhmo) that blocks up some of the area (if you can remember back to the last map where the main exit (apparently) was blocked up by lava, this is similar, but there is much more lava and it is inside the room too.) You can still reach the passages that lead to those underground tunnels etc. that reach the passages, and you can reach what you think must be the exit room from this section. The area is in worse condition than the one that you left however, and the blue flame no longer burns next to the glass hoop in this exit room. As far as you can tell, the only exit from this area is through the room that would logically be in the same place as the one in the other section that contained the metal cabinet. Checking this section out, you find nothing of interest. Moving out of the room down to the corresponding 'rod room' you are dismayed to find that this rod room has been broken. There are exits from the rod room to the west (where you came from) and to the North and South. [If you want a map, you'll have to wait for a few days. Otherwise, just look at the previous map in a mirror and imagine that there is even less room to move because of the lava flow. In fact, you have to use the passageway to reach the seperate rooms in this section.] Michael Wright wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au From <@helios.edvz.univie.ac.at:IO01108@MAINE.CAPS.MAINE.EDU> Sun Oct 17 17:30:38 1993 Received: from localhost by email.tuwien.ac.at with SMTP (PP) id <03969-0@email.tuwien.ac.at>; Sun, 17 Oct 1993 17:29:55 +0100 Received: from MAINE.CAPS.MAINE.EDU (NJE origin MAILER@MAINE) by AWIUNI11.EDVZ.UNIVIE.AC.AT (LMail V1.1d/1.7f) with BSMTP id 7118; Sun, 17 Oct 1993 17:30:23 +0100 Received: from MAINE.CAPS.MAINE.EDU (NJE origin IO01108@MAINE) by MAINE.CAPS.MAINE.EDU (LMail V1.1d/1.7f) with RFC822 id 1846; Sun, 17 Oct 1993 12:31:12 -0400 Subject: ATG: Te-rasti: Which Way? This room is similar to the ones that you have already seen. It has two concentric circles with runes in between, and a large triangle inscribed into the ground. The opening into the passage is strange however. It continually grows and shrinks, as if changing in size. Stepping through you have no problems. A short way down the strangely growing and shrinking passage, you spot a hole in the wall. Apparently this is some sort of emergency passage, which is now open. The passage leads to the space between the two tunnels. Another 'rod room' is in here, and a set of steps leads upwards leaving the east section of the room. Naturally, you begin the ascent. The steps ascend for a way, though not nearly as long as the previous set of steps down. You find yourselves at a stone door, which is moved with some difficulty. The smell of fresh air greets you. Opening the door, you walk out. You are standing at the head of a valley which is enclosed on three sides by steep rocky walls, which have been torn, fissured and worn into fantastic shapes and angles. Looking down into the valley you are amazed to see distant, weird mountains floating on a sea of pale, dense mist. Some peaks are rounded and smoothed, while others are angular and rugged. In places, massive overhands turn back on themselves to form strange, convoluted shapes. Without any warning, a grey mist springs up around you and rapidly obscures your vision. It invades your noses and mouths, scouring your throats and burning your lungs. Fearfully you cast round for the source of this vile sorcery but discover to your relief that it is no more than fine dust thrown into the air by your own movements. Travelling through this dust, you quickly sink to your knees, and discover that you will need some means of keeping this stuff out of your lungs. The valley that you are in runs south westerly then curves around to west further down. The huge mountains that can only be the hellfurnaces are now to your east. You have travelled several hundred miles through the solid rock of these harsh mountains. This wasteland is where the ancient Suloise once lived... The ground beneath the dust seems to be fairly solid however, and those of you higher than 4' tall have little trouble with the terrain. You look for areas in the rocks that may serve as resting areas to camp out overnight, but find none in the valley that you are travelling down. It is a couple of hours before you reach the end of the valley and enter the 'Sea of Dust' proper. By this time you have just about emptied all of your water supplies. Taufee makes a note to pray for her water creation again. You are all feeling a little hungry from the lack of food, but are nevertheless confident that you will survive this trip. By this time it is late afternoon. You reach a large rock that juts out of the dusty plain and rest in its shade. From here you can see a little of the mountainside to the north of you. It seems as if the whole mountain area contains deep valleys like the one that you emerged from. The dust in the air obscured your vision slightly, and you are unable to make out details, but the mountains continue this way as far as you can see. Having decided this, you set out north until the light becomes too poor for you to see properly (it should be noted that infravision is not good at showing fine detail, especially when the ground is all the same heat). You cannot find any shelter, but cover yourselves with blankets to ward of the chill of the night air (yes Brevan, it does get cold in the Sea of Dust!) and wait for first light to set out again. You awaken in the early morning and set out again. After travelling for about an hour, a movement behind catches your eye. Turning you see a number of grey shapes in the distance. As you peer at them they seem to fade into the clinging dust. In the next hour or two you notice the cloud behind you, but it is not until you stop for a break that the cloud comes any closer. Approaching you across the dust is a line of grey clad riders mounted on two-legged beasts. They halt 50 feet away and one of the riders holds up a hand in friendly greeting. With an archaic form of the common tongue, the rider greets you. "Hai. We be the Hek'islett. Riders of the dust. You away from home? Come, come to our place. Is a good yachem. You have food and water? Is good. Come, be our sulltos and join us." The Hek'islett are a group of small men (about 4' tall but with human characteristics). They are dressed in a clothing that seems to be made out of a fibre from some plant, like hemp or the like. This seems to be the only material used for clothing. They do not smell very pleasant. Counting the man now addressing you, there are 13 Hek'islett. The mounts that they use are unusual. [The best way to describe the mounts is : very tame Velociraptors. They do not have forearms and their mouths are beaks (no rip shred teeth and no gouge slash claws). The size is similar to that of the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park (see it if you haven't). On the way you learn that the man that has spoken to you is named Aratek and that he is the leader of the Hek'islett tribe. The conversation is a little hard to follow since Aratek only speaks his archaic form of the common tongue as well as another language that you suspect to be another derivation of the Ancient Suloise. It is impossible to follow however, and as such you are only able to speak to those who know archaic common, the leaders of the tribe (there are 2 others here with Aratek). Travelling North West along the mountain range, you head out westerly eventually to a huge rock outcropping that is seperate from the mountain range. The rock outcropping is still a few miles long though. Along the South face of the rock there is a crevice, measuring about 100 feet wide at the entrance and heading back about 200 feet. This steep box canyon holds the Hek'islett tribe. The camp is made up of several tents that are pitched seemingly at random on the ground. You are brought toward the center of the camp where Aratek announces something to his tribe. Women, children and men all crowd around you, fascinated by your appearance. Although they cannot communicate with you, they continue to babble at you as if expecting an answer. Aratek turns to you after his announcement. "You be free to walk through here like you live here. You are like Hek'islett. You obra guests. Come, I show you around". With that Aratek shows you around the camp. Toward the back of the canyon there is a pen with the mounts that you have already seen the Hek ride on. a tunnel in the eastern wall leads into the rock. "That be where we keep our food and riches. We will eat tonight. You can look in if you want. Let me show you your tent." With that, Aratek leads you to a tent just north of the tunnel. It is a reasonably sized tent, which contains bedding and fibre mattreses for you. Most importantly, it provides a respite from the fierce heat of the sun. Some Hek'islett women come in shortly and provide you with food. It appears to be some sort of fungus, and is bland, but seems nutritious. You hungrily wolf down the food and immediately feel much better. After a rest, you realise that children will be the same all over the world. Already they clamour around you, fascinated by you. Hopefully you will be able to get a chance to do some sleeping! [Anything you want to check out here? The tunnel? Now that you are slightly settled you take the time to examine them a little closer. Judging by handshakes etc, you can determine that their body temperature is very high. This is probably explainable in this climate. Living in a heat that is constantly higher than your own body temperature can be very damaging. They all smell rather unpleasant. You do notice that their skin seems to be covered in some sort of waxy resin. This may be the source of the odor. For a tribe of people who live in such a hot and dry area, they seem to drink practically no water. You have noticed some evidence of water (eg cups and such), but you have not personally been offered water yet, and have seen people take no more than sips from containers after working in the sun for hours. The basic lifestyle of the Hek'islett seems to be gathering. You can determine that there is some sort of farm inside the rock tunnel which provides the food source for the Hek'islett. Parties of men and women return back to the camp carrying what appear to be the roots of a hardy desert plant. You can also see some of the Hek weaving and creating clothing and shelter out of these roots. In all, the community seems to be fairly peaceful. There are no guards posted at the entrance to the canyon, and while there are weapons about, nobody carries them on their person. The meal that night is held in Aratek's tent. He is accompanied by two of his advisors, plus what seems to be a 'wise man'. The childeren have been asked to leave you in peace for a while, a task that is not easy after Elhmo's performance. The Hek will not say any more about Yatish d'Ladet. The conversation turns to other things now, to the legends of the tribe and history of the Sea of Dust. You talk into the evening, and eventually return to the tent for a good nights sleep. The next day you have a look in the tunnel where the Hek's riches are. You find a moderately wide tunnel. There is a door set into one side of the passage with two guards standing next to it. They make no move to stop or help you. The door is locked. Further on, you find a workroom, where members of the tribe are working on the roots of some plant, making clothes and straining juice from it. This juices smell is overpowering, and you realise that it is what every Hek smells like. From observation, you discover that the Hek cover their bodies with this juice to prevent them from sweating. You feel that sweaty bodies would smell much better than this stuff! The last cavern contains numerous fungi, growing under the careful eyes of gardeners. This fungi is the staple diet of the Hek, and your meal last night and this morning. The floor is a green mush, which must be from some of the extract of the other plant from the other room. If you get this, let me know! -Vince/Brevan From jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com Mon Nov 22 20:25:37 1993 Received: from jabba.ess.harris.com by ess.harris.com (4.1/SMI-4.0) id AA04810; Mon, 22 Nov 93 14:24:25 EST Received: from pizza.ess.harris.com by jabba.ess.harris.com (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA10572; Mon, 22 Nov 93 14:24:34 EST From: jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com (Joe Carl Jr.) Message-Id: <9311221924.AA10572@jabba.ess.harris.com> Subject: ATG: Junior -> Trying to talk his way out To: jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com (Joe Carl Jr), wright@latcs2.lat.oz.au (Michael Wright), alex (Alexander Forst), IO01108@MAINE.maine.edu (Sean Cheetham), gt6441c@prism.gatech.edu (Jon Edwards), vjg@cblph.att.com (Vince Guinto), sinari@vinkku.hut.fi (Jukka Sinisalo), bonafos@cesr.cnes.fr Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1993 14:24:33 -0500 (EST) In-Reply-To: X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL13] Content-Type: text Content-Length: 531 Status: OR Junior: > He cries out, "Junior! "Elhmo! you still have you decanter of endless water. Right?" Junior asked leadingly. Junior concentrated again breifely before pulling his sling out. If so, I'm sure... ahhhhhh :) In a last ditch hope, IF Elhmo still has his spear (I think he does) he will strike the butt of the spear to the ground yelling "BEHOLD" and drop a pinch of the illusion dust. The illusion will be that of a gushing spring where the spear hit the ground. The water will really be gushing. Perhaps this will atleast catch some of them off guard... Elhmo will carry the illusion as far as he can. The warrior's mounts will get wet legs, and if they try to drink it it will appear to quench their thrist. Jon PS- Color Spray is still dancing around in the back of his mind though...
