As the situation looks like it may be getting ugly, the warriors move forward and attack. The warriors both look to be very skilled at the use of their spears, and handle them excellently. Both strikes hit their intended targets exactly where they are supposed to (8 hit points damage to both Junior and Torgan) The two of you swing back. I don't have the map with me but from my memory, the canyon goes a few _miles_ into the mountains and there is nothing but swamp, bog, and hydra... after all, the Atem are jungle- warriors and afraid of "The Thing from the canyon" (=hydra). It is possible that the warriors never tried to get _past_ the hydra so they simply don't know what is beyond, or, they never go into the mountains because there is no vegetation to hide, no animal herds to hunt,... Suggestion: let the party flee into the bog the Atem _don't_follow_ because they are afraid of the hydra perhaps give the party the opportunity to rest one day in a small cave in the canyon (I don't know how many spells, daggers, stones they have left) on the next day let them meet the hydra, perhaps the hydra smells them in or near the cave it should be possible to climb the walls of the canyon, perhaps find a small ledge to gain missile advantage It is not impossible to defeat the hydra, only the Atem don't have the right weapons or spells (or they never tried to kill the hydra because of their fear) A combination of missile fire from the canyon walls and something to distract the monster should do it (I would disallow normal fire in the bog, it won't burn, but magical fire and smoke is okay) The hydra does not have sooo many hp and it is a single target which is attacked from many sides. After (hopefully) defeating the hydra let them find Vanck (he is _very_ friendly to guests). If they behave correctly they could stay for a week or even longer to heal their wounds. Now time to get back into the game...] Okay, the scene as I think it is: Brevan's in a room. In this room are two savages who are just standing around, doing nothing at the moment. There's a big jaguar statue and a pile of loot that unfortunately we don't have time to examine right now. There are also two formerly-hostile warriors (another faction, perhaps?). One was on Brevan, but backed off when I beat him up. The other skewered Junior kind of like a mini-wienie on a toothpick. Brevan then wallops this warrior, and he backs off also. So right now, Torgan and Brevan are standing at the top of a stairway, Junior is at the bottom of the stairs bleeding profusely, and there are a bunch of warriors coming in through the doorway. But strangely, they don't seem to want to kill us... Assuming this picture is accurate, here's what Brevan does next: Brevan says, "Enough of this! Torgan, let's leave while we can, and take our chances in the swamp." Brevan heads down the stairs, where he slings his shield on his back, picks up Junior one-handed (keeping his sword drawn and ready), tosses Junior over his shoulder, and looks for the way out. -Vince/Brevan From le_gued@euterpe.cert.fr Tue Jun 15 17:35:45 1993 Received: from tls-cs.cert.fr by chenas.inria.fr (5.65c8d/92.02.29) via Fnet-EUnet id AA26498; Tue, 15 Jun 1993 17:01:21 +0200 (MET) Received: from euterpe.cert.fr by tls-cs.cert.fr, Tue, 15 Jun 93 17:01:58 +0200 Received: by euterpe.cert.fr, Tue, 15 Jun 93 16:57:15 +0200 Date: Tue, 15 Jun 93 16:57:15 +0200 From: le_gued@euterpe.cert.fr (Yannick Le Guedart) Message-Id: <9306151457.AA00589@euterpe.cert.fr> To: wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au, alex, vjg@cblph.att.com Subject: ATG : Torgan.32 Status: OR I'm afraid my mailtool didn't send my last message... Each day of full rest takes off 1 hit point for _each wound_ . Thus if you had one wound, you would heal at 1 hit point per day, if you had five wounds you would heal at 5 hit points per day. If a wound is healed for the amount of damage it was worth, you no longer get the heal for it. E.g. Karrak has a wound of 3 hit points and a wound of 1 hit point. On day 1 of his resting, he heals 2 points, bringing his wounds to 0 and 2. The next day he only heals 1 point, since there is only 1 wound left. His wound is now at 1 hit point. After day 3 he is fully healed. (This means that the time taken to fully heal someone naturally is the time that it takes to fully heal their worst wound). Healing spells look at the worst wounds first. By this means, healing becomes a little faster. I will post each of you after the turn with your current status] Junior peers into the cave after his chanting and strange gesturing. He then turns to you all and says, "It's okay, there's nothing in there." You all stretch out and prepare to rest. Elhmo and Brevan step outside, Brevan with his tent, which he sets up to act as a funnel for any rain that may come. Elhmo practices a few throws with his new spear, but does not appear to be much good at it. Meanwhile inside, Junior looks himself over and hums and chants some more. One of his wounds closes up considerably, and is almost gone now. Junior then turns to Prometheus, who is looking very bad from that jump from the top of the wall. He places his hands on Prometheus and chants again. Nothing happens. His eyes furrowed in frustration, Junior begins his chant again, and Prometheus' body begins to heal before everyones eyes. However, as Prometheus looks better and better, Junior begins to wilt and look worse! By the time Prometheus is fully healed, Junior looks ready to collapse! He smiles wanly as he sees his healing working and quietly says to nobody in particular, "I just need to rest now." With that Junior lies down and goes to sleep. Torgan and Taufee both lie down and go to sleep, while Prometheus, now invigorated, goes outside to see how Brevan and Elhmo are doing. Te-rasti looks at his spellbook, then decides to get some sleep first. The rain eventually comes later on in the night. Brevan makes sure that all of the waterskins are filled up before coming back into the cave to sleep. Everyone decides to call it a night and exhaustion ensures that nobody is kept awake more than mere moments before lying down. Morning comes, and Elhmo and Prometheus go out to look for food. They find quite a few bones of animals scattered through the bog. Most of these animals seem to be smallish, although there are some that look like tigers skeletons. A few small animals are caught (mammals), and are then cooked over a fire made up by the others waiting back at the cave. As soon as Junior woke up, he sent himself into a deep trance, and has not moved since early morning... The problem with complete healing isn't your fault though. The problem I have is with the mechanics of it's description. I'm out for 24 hours without being able to interact. That puts the group in a very difficult position especially with Atem warriors soon to follow. They might end up haveing to leave me, or hurt me to break the trance. With the low value of my HP compared to my PSP score I can heal myself using Cell adjustment. This would mean I need to heal 18 HPs at a cost of 5 per for a total of 90 PSPs. Which I don't have all of that but darn near full. But I can rejuvinate my full PSP in almost 6 hours, and complete the process of healing myself and still have more PSPs than if I choose Complete healing. So Looking at it from a rules point of view I can 1) Use Complete healing and be useless for 24 hours and end up with 41 PSP at the end of it all or 2) Use 60 PSP to heal 12 HP using Cell Adjustment. Rejuvinate for 5 hours. Use 30 PSP to heal 6 HP using Cell Adjustment, and end up with 41 PSP at the end of it all but 19 hours earlier, and I could interrupt the process at any time. There are numerous thing we can do to fix this, Because I wouldn't want the complete healing to dissappear. But as the rules are written I can't see using it currently. Here are some ideas for fixes with my reaction to them 1) Change the cost of Complete healing to only 1 PSP a) Very attractive but still 24 hours of uninterruptable non-interaction I'd still choose Cell Adjustment. The cost-risk ratio still favors Cell Adjustment 2) Reduce Complete Healing time to 6 hour a) Now it's closer to the Cell adjustment solution, but still Cell adjustment is better cause I'm still aware and can react to the environment 3) Reduce Complete Healing time to 1 hour a) I'd probably do this option in lieu of the Cell adjustment, but now it looks like a game-imbalancing option 4) Change the rules to Complete Healing so that I can move around and do anything physical. The complete healing will be complete in 24 hours but no other psionic powers may be used in that time or it is interrupted a) Cell adjustment still is better cause I've healed others in the mean time and I'd be moving around with Cell adjustment too anyways. Basically 24 hours is too long. Reducing the time frame to 1 hour seems like to big of a modification for this power too. 5) Here's a wierd one. Change Complete Healing so it works in 1 round but it uses up 1/2 Max PSP's. You glow like a continual light spell for as many hours has you healed HPs. (Dispel magic won't get rid of it cause it's not magical) a) It's got good possibilites for role playing. and forces the psionicist to answer some tough questions when dispel magic doesn't work, and darkness does work but not the way expected (It really is dark and doesn't cancel the effect). Its cost more, and the cost increases with level as do HP's. It's better than Cell adjustment, time-frame wise. The problem of "Is it safe to use this power?" is still present but now the likelyhood of using it is greater. And even if the side effects do irk the other characters, they can interact with the Psionicist, unlike when the Psioncist is a zombie as the rules state now. And the side effect is long lasting as in the original rules. So give me your ideas on what we can do to fix this problem. But until we fix the problem I see we have with the rules, I would like to alter the Complete healing write up you did to a Cell adjustment in the morning, and I am rejuvinating at the moment but aware of what is going on and can react to it if necessary. The action is fast and furious, and everyone else is a bit nervous about joining in. "The pebble skipping champion" is challenged however, and so cannot back down. Taufee prays to Norebo for aid in healing the wounds of both herself and Elhmo, who is still badly hurt. Her prayers are answered, as her body is completely healed, and the worst of Elhmo's wounds disappears. Junior sets about the task of doing what he and Boccob can to help the wounded, and Brevans wounds are healed. Junior seems to be weakened again by the healing of Brevan, but not so badly as when Prometheus needed attention. He goes back into a trance-like meditation for most of the day. Feeling better from the curing, Elhmo goes outside again with Brevan to learn the fine art of becoming a warrior. Unfortunately, the closest Brevan has come to training with a spear is his training in the lance, so he is not much use in helping Elhmo with his new found weapon. "Here, try using it like a sword, and I'll teach you the fine art of swordplay instead..." Taufee has, of course, joined in the games of chance with the other gamblers in the party. Is is just coincidence, or do the odds seem to favour her? After a while, Prometheus makes his way outside, to help in the instruction of the latest "warrior" in the group, and to see if anyone is interested in looking for food. A quick hunt around the bog area determines that there are indeed quite a few animals who come down from the mountain areas to possibly gain water from this muddy ground. One thing that you notice about the area is that there are a very large amount of skeletons littering the floor. Why haven't the Atem come after you yet? You manage to capture what seems to be like a mountain goat, although its coat of fur is much less due to the _heat_ of this area. Carrying it back to the cave on Elhmo's spear, the spirits of the hunters are high. Junior wakes shortly after the food is brought in. Looking much better, he moves to heal Torgan, followed by Te-rasti and Elhmo. Looking very pale after this, it seems as if Junior is having his life sucked out of him! Everyone has now healed, yet Junior looks like he needs to go to bed yet again. He does stay to eat though, and this evening is the first one that could be called pleasurable for the rest of you since the beginning of this cursed trek!! When morning comes, Junior seems to be 100% again, so you set out for the end of this canyon. The canyon turns slightly every now and then, and seems to get slightly narrower. The skeletons that lie on the floor sometimes have flesh still on them, different to those at the other end which were bare. The smell is not quite what you'd call pleasant. A loud roar breaks out across the swamp. To your horror, a huge form comes around one of the bends in the canyon. The appearance is unmistakeable. A huge reptilian form, easily 30 feet long from head to tail. It's hard to say which head though, there are seven of them! The Hydra screams out in rage and runs toward you. In an instant, Elhmo disappears before you all, as Taufee utters an incantation. A large, slow, fat sheep appears amongst the party and begins to waddle off away from the conflict. The hydra looks at it for a moment with one of its heads, but the other heads remain fixed on the people who are now in front of it. Prometheus tries to slash away at one of the heads, but does not have much success. Junior fares better however, and one of his sling stones hits the monster right in the middle of one of its heads (4 points damage). Te-rasti's spell is completed, and the familiar fiery streak comes forth from his fingertips to embed itself in another one of the Hydra's heads (5 points damage). Brevan fires an arrow, but is unlucky enough to miss. Torgan is also unfortunate enough to have no luck in his attack. As the Hydra comes closer to you, a huge wound appears in its chest. ELhmo appears from nowhere, a spear in his hand sticking out of the Hydra's chest. Elhmo pulls the spear free and rolls out of the way. Before your eyes, the wound in the chest of the Hydra immediately closes up, as if nothing has happened to it! The hydra's heads all snake out and lash out at you. Te-rasti, Taufee, Elhmo, Torgan and Junior are all hit, (1, 5, 1, 2 and 1 points respectively). Brevan fires off a second shot at the Hydra and is successful! (4 points damage). This head was the one that Junior also hit and now it hangs from the body of the Hydra limply. It does not move. The Hydra now has 6 heads left, 1 having 5 points damage to it. Naturally, the Hydra reacts to this threat more and tends to pay a little less attention to you all. Torgan makes another attempt to get at one of the necks of the Hydra, but is unsucessful. Brevan manages to get his sword to strike home with deadly accuracy on the head that he already wounded (12 points damage). The head is severed from the neck, and blood pours out before the neck seals up. Although the wound has completely closed up in a matter of seconds, it doesn't look like another head will be forthcoming... Junior leans over Taufee and prays a silent prayer. He gasps in pain and goes a little limp, but his hand stays firm on Taufees body. Eventually, Taufee opens her eyes groggily, and looks around, not quite sure what has happened. Junior tries to get her to move out of the range of the fight. Te-rasti and Prometheus both try to attack the Hydra now, but are unable to get clear shots due to the Hydras combat with the 'Dragon'. Both of Te-rasti's daggers miss and Prometheus only manages to cut the air viciously. The Hydra now has four heads, one of which is wounded for 3 points. It looks like it is still concentrating on the illusion of the dragon. Now we can get back into the game!] The Hydra still seems to be preoccupied by the 'Dragon' that appears in front of it, and continues to ignore you all. Promethus lashes out with his sword, but misses. Te-rasti manages to throw the last of his daggers at the wounded head from the four remaining heads. Unfortunately the dagger sails past the beasts head and lands on the other side of it. Taufee remains out of the range of the fight, and attempts to cast a spell upon herself. Unfortunately, the shock of being knocked unconcious has made it impossible for her to draw power from Norebo. Brevan hits the wounded head heavily with his sword (5 points damage), severing the neck. There are now four heads lying limply and three that are unharmed. Elhmo is still deep in concentration, trying to control the illusion of the Dragon. The dragon makes an attempt to hit the Hydra, and the creature screams in rage as if hit. It makes an attempt to hit back though, but is too slow for the 'Dragon'. Torgan lunges with his short sword, attempting to pierce more Hydra flesh. His thrust is not long enough however, and the sword fails to draw blood this round. Junior has now re-entered the melee (don't you just love that word?) swinging his footmans flail around his head. The weapon makes no contact however. The Hydra now has three heads left. It still seems to believe that the Dragon is real, but has directed the attention of two of its heads back to you, seeing as most of its damage is coming from this quarter of the battle.
