To: All That Glitters -- Brevan , Elhmo , Junior , Michael Wright , Prometheus , Taufee , Te-rasti , Torgan , Watcher Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: OR Elhmo fires his hand crossbow at the warrior, aimimg at his legs. The quarrel shoots forth from the crossbow, but misses. Prometheus leaps forward, covering the distance between the fleeing warrior and himself in a huge bound, and brings his sword down. The blade of the longsword strikes the warrior on his arm as he runs, and opens up a large gash (3 points damage). The warrior continues to run however. Te-rasti's magic missile shoots past Brevan as he moves in to try to tackle the fleeing warrior. The missile hits, and you are all greeted with the smell of burned flesh (3 points damage). The warrior cries out, and slows a little, but still seems to be healthy enough to run. Brevan tries to catch up to him and leaps out to make a grab. He succeeds in catching the warrior, pulling him to the ground. The warrior is then soon surrounded by the rest of you, and stops trying to escape. Just as you are beginning to get settled, a huge eagle lands on the path and shimmers back into the shape of Junior. There is a squat building in the middle of the top of the wall, guarded by two guards, who are playing with pebbles at the moment. To your right, the ground below is a bog, and leads into a large canyon in the mountain. To the left, the village described by Junior rests around a small river that comes from the bottom of the wall. The huts are of wooden and grass make, and you can see the activity of the village below. A wooden staircase runs from your immediate left down to the village below, hugging the wall of the canyon on its way down. That's right. But it makes the situation now _very_ dangerous for the group. There is no sneaking anymore to past the village. The Atem know about the group to come in peace from the first encounter (at least the group was not trying to kill the warriors) so the path guards should have known about the group too. The wall is about 40-50 feet high] [Up is North] The prospect of combat is not one that you relish, but you realise that the warlike tendancies of the Atem tribe will give no quarter in this conflict. You brace yourself, ready for the fight. Prometheus casts his last sleep spell, dropping 3 of the warriors attempting to climb the staircase. At the same time, Elhmo throws his ball of fire down on the stairs and they begin to 'ingnite'. You can see the concern on the faces of the Atem, but also puzzlement. Junior stands concentrating for a while next to the steps. He mumbles a while, then seems to slump his shoulders. He makes no other move. The priestess on top of the wall finishes chanting and a fiery ball appears in her hand. She hurls this ball at Junior, and it hits, searing his skin badly (5 points damage). Fortunately, his clothing does not ignite. At the same time, Torgan lashes out at one of the guards with his sword, hitting the shoulder of the warrior and bringing a spray of blood (3 points damage). The warrior and his counterpart both stab out at the same time, one at Torgan and the other at Brevan. Both miss with their clumsy stabs. Te-rasti casts a spell and a magic missile streaks from his hand straight toward the woman. The missile strikes dead on target and burns into her thigh. The woman cries out in pain, but stands firm (4 points damage). Taufee whirls her quarterstaff around and hits the uninjured warrior. [The stairs are about 70-80 feet long. The wall is about 40-50 feet high] [Up is North] Junior and Torgan check out the door at the base of the wall carefully. Everything seems to be safe, so Torgan slowly opens the door, revealing a spiral staircase that apparently leads to the building on top of the wall. Elhmo lets off his spell, and a dazzling array of colors spring forth from his outstretched hands. The warriors at the front of the group are met head on with this display of light, and six of drop down unconcious. The light fades quickly however, and the warriors continue their surge up the stairs. Some of the warriors who have not made it to the stairwell yet have put the ladders up on western section of the wall, and are beginning to climb.. The woman at the doorway throws the flame that is still in her hand at Brevan. Brevan quickly brings his shield up, trying to deflect the blow. He is sucessful, and the flame sputters in the thick wood for a moment before dying out. Another flame appears in the womans hand. Prometheus fires his bow into the surge of warriors that are almost at the top of the staircase. His aim is off however, and the arrow strikes the rock of the canyon wall and bounces off. From the doorway behind the woman comes a growl, and two leopards spring from the opening and pounce! One moves toward Brevan and the other toward Taufee. Brevan's leopard paws at him, but misses. Taufee is equally as lucky, as the other leopards strike does not find its target. Taufee makes a whirling attack with her quarterstaff, and knocks the warrior still facing her squarely in the chest (4 points damage). The blow takes the last out of him, and sends him over the top of the wall to fall to his death in the bog. Fortunately, neither Junior or Torgan are below the area where Taufee was fighting. The bog may be softer than normal ground, but the crunch as the warriors body hits the ground can still be heard from the top of the wall. Te-rasti sees that there is no way that his dagger could reach the distance from him to the warriors this round, and so holds off his attack. Brevan swings at the woman as she sways before him. The fewer opponents to worry about the better! Pulling his blow by not putting his full strength into it, Brevan still manages to his the woman squarely with the flat of his blade in her stomach. She falls to the ground unconcious. A third leopard leaps from the doorway! This one jumps straight toward Te-rasti and swipes with its paws narrowly missing him. Prometheus fires a second arrow into the crowd, having more success this time than before. One of the warriors clutches an arrow sticking out of his chest, and leans heavily against the wall of the canyon, allowing his fellow villagers to pass him by. Brevan's leopard swipes again, and misses. Taufee manages to hold hers at bay too. Te-rasti now strikes out at the leopard that has engaged him, using his dagger. He draws a large gash against the animals chest (4 points damage). The leopard strikes back, but misses again. All three leopards try to bite their intended victims. Te-rasti and Taufee are safe, but Brevan is not so lucky. The leopard bites deeply into his left arm, leaving a deep wound which starts to bleed (3 points damage) The warriors will reach the top of the stairs in the next round... Since you're going to be on summer vacation soon, how many of you will be unable to post over your break? I won't kill off your characters if you can't post for about a month or so, so don't worry about that. Mailing you the turns can be optional. I know that there are a few of us who will still be around, but if that is only one or two we may have the game put on hold until we have at least half a party present. Depending on what happens about this, we may have to increase the frequency of turns sent out. I will probably be finished at the end of the year here (about 20th December the account will be gone) so we might have to increase to 1 turn per day or so near the end if I don't think we're going to make it. It all depends on how we go, as I said. Lastly, sorry about not posting a turn on Monday, but we've been a little swamped with work here. I'll get the next turn out later today. Prometheus backs off from the area toward the rope and fires off an arrow as he retreats. The arrow skewers one of the warriors on the stairs and he falls down (5 points damage). At the same time, Te-rasti attacks his leopard with his longsword. The sword slices harmlessly through the air, and Te-rasti curses his luck. Brevans longsword dances in his hand and strikes home, causing the leopard he faces to howl with pain (5 points damage). Taufee whirls her quarterstaff and pokes at her leopards vitals. The blow glances off the beasts body however, and does no real damage. Brevan is struck with the full force of a leopards front paw. Its claws bite deeply into his flesh as another wound is opened (2 points damage). Te-rasti also fares badly in avoiding the claws of his enemy and is caught in the side by his leopards attack (2 points damage). Taufee easily manages to skip out of harms reach when her leopard makes a hasty swipe. Te-rasti swipes across his leopards body with his dagger. Blood sprays out as a gash is opened along the beasts shoulder (3 points damage). Brevans sword strikes home again, and there is no doubt that the blow is a heavy one (10 points damage). The leopard seems to be almost stunned by the shock of the hit, and stops moving for a moment. All three leopards make another swipe at their potential victims. All three hit. (damage is Brevan : 3, Te-rasti : 1, Taufee : 3). They also attempt to bite each of the three unfortunates, resulting in further wounding for Brevan and Te-rasti (1 damage for Brevan, 5 damage for Te-rasti). It is fairly obvious to you all that Te-rasti is in a bit of trouble, though Brevan still looks to be okay. The blade flickers dangerously in the air, and strikes its target with deadly accuracy (rolls a 20 for the second time on the wall!). The thrust is indeed a deep wound (9 points damage). This leopard is by no means normal. Granted it is bleeding profusely, but a normal animal of this size would have been killed by the damage that has been inflicted! Instead the leopard looks to have a lot of fight left in it... The warriors on the steps fire their bows, aiming straight at Elhmo. A pity that Prometheus has no weapons or equipment to meet the blow with one of his own... Prometheus manages to jump back over the distance between the site of the combat and the top of the rope. "Get down!" he yells to Te-rasti while preparing for the onslaught of the now opponent-less animal. Taufee throws a handful of pepper into the face of her leopard. The beasts eyes open wide, and it begins to sneeze uncontrollably. Unable to concentrate on anything else but the _intense_ irritation of its nose, the leopard ignores the fight and concentrates on trying to clear its nose of the pepper. Taufee takes the opportunity to back up to where the rope is too. Brevan is still in the thick of the battle! As he steps out over the edge he says to Prometheus, "You are quite correct that defending the Elven Nation is difficult to do when you are dead. Besides, I still have a storm giant to find! The words that come back are a little jumbled, but you both understand their general intent... "If you say you come in peace, then why aren't our path guards with you? Why have you killed two of my guards and why are you standing on these stairs of our holy shrine with a weapon in your hand? We know what people like you want from us! And we've beaten your kind before, so don't think that we won't do it again! See for yourself the truth of my words!" With this he points at the pile of glowing weapons and items on the ground next to the shrine. The warriors close further in and begin to attack... [There are two warriors here, attacking one of you each. If you wish to retreat, you can probably do so without opening yourself up to an attack from behind due to the spiral effect of the stairs. Of course, you don't know whether or not the warriors will follow you down.] Michael Wright wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au From wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au Mon Jun 7 02:47:53 1993 Received: from latcs2.lat.OZ.AU by latcs1.lat.oz.au (5.65+/1.34) id AA23040; Mon, 7 Jun 93 10:44:06 +1000 Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1993 10:08:12 +1000 (AEST) From: Michael Wright Subject: ATG : Turn 29 (according to Prometheus). To: All That Glitters -- Brevan , Elhmo , Junior , Michael Wright , Prometheus , Taufee , Te-rasti , Torgan , Watcher Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: OR [As the battle gets more and more frantic... (and I thought that you guys might have had this module too easy!)] With a loud scream, Elhmo jumps off the wall to plummet to the ground below. However, during the fall, the muttering of a few words causes his rate of descent to slow rapidly, until he is floating down leisurely.(who needs a bungy cord?) Te-rasti and Taufee both make it to the rope and begin to climb down. The weight of the two on the rope and the movement makes the hook on the top scrape precariously close to the edge of the wall. Before they reach the bottom it will probably come loose if not held back. That is not such an easy task now though. The warriors have finally reached the top of the stairs and are making their way toward the melee. With a snarl, Brevan's leopard makes yet another swipe at the big warrior. The animal seems as frustrated in the endurance of her prey as Brevan does about how much punishment the leopard can take. Brevan's armor again makes itself useful as a claw scratches across the metal chain. To return the favour, Brevan again strikes out with his sword, now liberally coated in blood. Another heavy blow results (8 points damage). This blow seems to take the fight out of the animal, as it retreats to the doorway. A growl is all it takes to make the other leopard join it. The other leopard makes a strike at Prometheus as it leaves, missing its mark by a long way. It is now out of attacking range for prometheus [N.B. this is assuming that Prometheus is staying next to the rope to cover the retreat of Te-rasti and Taufee. He could press the attack, but I have assumed that he wants to stay here given the problem with the rope's stability and those pesky warriors]. Brevan and the leopard exchange another series of swipes as it leaves. Brevan just manages to get in another very solid hit (12 points damage!), and the beast drops to the floor, bleeding profusely. A most peculiar thing then happens. The leopard begins to change form before your very eyes. Before long, what lies before you is a small woman, dressed in the traditional style of the Atem, carrying a spear and shield. The remaining leopard (the sneezing one having retreated long ago) drags the comatose form inside the door... You don't have long to savour your victory however. Already the warriors are at your side, poking out with their spears. They surround Prometheus and Brevan, and try to poke many, many holes in the two valiant warriors... [It may be suicide to try to descend the rope without someone at the top to guard. Te-rasti and Taufee need another round to get to the bottom. After that they are safely on the ground. What you do next is up to you.] Michael Wright wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au P.S. You know, it would have been a _really_ good idea to set fire to those steps when you had the chance :-) P.P.S.
