It reads roughly as follows : "My people, the Suel, were proud. We built great monuments and our armies spread like summer fire over the dry plains. Soon all we surveyed was ours. All except the land beyond the mountains. The great king, Terazel lusting after further conquests commended a great tunnel to be bored through the earth. With the aid of the dark mage Kahoatep this was accomplished, but the price was high. Under Kahoatep's influence the Suel turned to evil ways and the gods were angered. Fire poured from the earth, the heavens screamed in black anger and the mountains moved from their foundations. "Taking what little I could I led the remaining believers to safety. Here we suffered and many died, but water was ours, for I possessed the words of power and the glass of life. Finally we built this temple to our gods and prayed for forgiveness. Alas, absolution has not been granted and I fear that I will be denied the voyage to the golden shore. Keeper of the Water and Flame, I may be, but the tunnels are sealed and the land is wasted. I go to my rest a sorrowful man." The west side of the sarcophagus is carved with scenes of flowing water and shows the piranha headed man (the statue a couple of rooms back which was in front of the receptacle in the room) spouting water from his mouth into the receptacle. The east side depicts a man wearing purple robes and carrying a staff while overseeing the construction of the temple and the village outside. Engraved on the south side is a picture of the decanter that you found in the piranha headed man's mouth. It is spouting water into the air. The north side bears an inscription, again is Suloise : "Teaxacotl, saviour of his people lies here. His body rests but his soul soars on winds of vapour." The sarcophagus lid looks quite heavy. "Don't forget that it's still locked", points out Brevan. "Don't worry. I'll soon fix that up!", chuckles Te-rasti. "Are you ready to use the protection scroll yet Taufee?" "Ready. Here goes..." Taufee begins the chant from the scroll. The words flow around you, meaningless, yet you can feel their power. When the chant stops, Te-rasti gets to work on the lock. After a while it becomes apparent that the lock is beyond Te-rasti's skill. Much to Juniors dismay, the idea of breaking open the lock is brought up. "Can't we bring the box back with us and try opening it there?" Elhmo chimes in. "I'm not travelling all the way back with a box that might have a huge curse on it. If you're going to open it, do it here. Personally, I think that it's just better to leave it alone." "We can't do that", says Brevan, " because I have to find enough money to support the family. If I don't then all of this has been for nothing!" His knife hilt comes down on the lock hard, and you all hear the lock break. There is a little damage to the box, but most of the box remains pristine. With the box unlocked, Te-rasti greedily opens the lid and peers inside. "Arrrgh!" he cries out in pain. You see him writhing on the ground, clutching at his eyes. After a while, he stops thrashing, and slowly opens his eyes to look around. He is obviously relieved to find that he can still see. "Ummm, I think that the danger has passed" says Junior sheepishly. "Why don't we look into the box now?" Brevan gingerly pries the lid back open and peers in from a distance. It seems to be perfectly safe now. What you see takes your breath away however. Did >we have some sort of budget to deal with? Elhmo will place his bids >on the ring and gems once I get a reply. I collected the bid for everyone, and the highest bid got the item. I summed up the total of all the bid and then divided evenly to find out how much everyone should have gotten. Those that bid for everything owed the others gold in exchange, because they set the price for the item. So if Elhmo bid 1000 for every item, and no one else out bid him, he's set the price. Assuming there are 10 items then the value of the pile is 10000. if there is 5000 gp in the sack then the total value of all treasure is 15000. And if we have 5 people splitting the pile that mean everyone should get 3000 worth of stuff. Looks like Elhmo will have to come up with 7000 gp from someplace, cause he's got more than he can afford! :) He'll have to settle somehow and that probably means selling on of those items for something less than 1000 to one of the other characters! :) Better bid wisely. To help us out, a fair market price will be announced before bidding starts so that we know where to start from. For example the wand would fetch 500 on the open market. Well if Junior really wants it, he could bid 600, but Taufee might really want it and bid 650. It's all secret until the bids are all in though. I'll set up my bids before anyone sends me theirs that way I'm not cheating. I lost the old settle up sheet, so we can call it even for now. Is that okay with everyone? We can simply say I want this any objections? I'd hate to be ramming this down everyone throats if this isn't what anyone wants. >>This is true for specialist mages as well, but only for their class >> of spells. If you cast outside your class of specialization the cost >> is doubled. >OUCH!! But I guess specialists do need some sort of balance... This isn't really all that bad! Try a few variations. At first level a mage could cast 1 spell, an illusionist could cast 2 illusions or 1 normal spell Good if he stays in class, but the same as a regular wizard if he goes outside of class. I think that is fair, better than the standard AD&D At second level a mage could cast 2 spells, an illusions could cast 3 illusions, or 1 illusion and 1 standard spell. The illusionist isn't quite as good as the mage if he needs to be well rounded, but that's the point of specializing. But if he stays in class he's much better than the standard mage. At third level the standard mage could cast 2 2nd level spells or 4 1st. The illusionist could cast 7 1st level illusions! or 3 2nd level illusions! He could also cast 3 1st level normal spells and an illusion, which is only slightly worse than the standard mage. He's doing all right I think :) >Are we still limited to what we have in our spell books? Yes you can cast only what you have learned. You can't cast from a spell book though, but you'll find lugging around a spell book isn't all that necessary anymore, as I don't make you re-memorize the spells. As you advance in levels as a mage, I let you take your new levels worth of spells. Thus if you advance to 4th level you can choose 4 spell levels. (4-1st), or (2-2nd), or (1-4th), or (1-3rd and 1-1st). Take care, Joe Carl PS. If this causes to much heart burn we can do it the old way. I believe they weren't magical, but had some value for craftsmanship. Second, I think at least a few of us had expressed a desire NOT to loot the Sueloise corpse. That would mean the plate mail and shield won't be in the pile of loot we split up (and maybe even the staff and one of the rings). How does the party feel about that? Brevan's eying the plate mail, as the only item in the pile other than the coins he'd be interested in, but his beliefs would normally lead him to not take the armor. Third, Brevan doesn't think it makes sense to include the incense in the loot to be divided up, until we find out whether we'll need to use it to return home (unless the rest of us are willing to compensate the owner for its use). And I've heard of people who want the weirdest things, too." "This museum thing sounds like an interesting idea, actually; if I were visiting Greyhawk, I might go see it. And if Master Gasgal has some secret plan up his sleeve, well, it's not Junior's fault if he was deceived."
