"She might be able to tell us more about the other group of white people too, but as far as Ah'tla moo is concerned I don't think I should ask her directly. Status: OR Junior attempts a little later on to talk to Mara some more, particularly about Attlah-Mu and the other White people that came through the jungle some time in the past. She is very tight lipped about Attlah-Mu, saying nothing more about the matter other than 'We do not speak of Attlah-Mu to outsiders, I have already said too much'. Of the other white people, they passed through here a while ago (you have no idea how long 'a while' is) and the tribe attacked them. Some of their 'treasures' remain with the Atem. When asked to provide a token to claim peace with any other hunting parties, Mara laughs. 'No outsiders can claim peace when they are on our land. To invade tribal lands is to challenge us for control of them! We will not attack you again, but I say nothing for any others of my tribe!' As you settle down for the nights meal, Mara decides to leave along with her warriors. 'We will return to our village. We have no wish to stay in the company of enemies.' Apparently war features very prominently in the Atem psyche. Brevan and Torgan eat together, speaking once more of Torgans sister. They decide to keep each other company on the first watch of the evening. Everyone else settles down to another fitful sleep in the stifling humidity of the Amedio jungle. Already you are all homesick, wishing that you could perhaps be blessed with just one cool breeze through the jungle. That is not to be. Morning breaks and the warriors are nowhere to be seen. You all pack up the remains of the camp and resume your trek. Late afternoon sees you reach a fork in the river, which you follow according to the map. By all accounts, the dagger symbol should be arrived after the next set of rapids, possibly the next day. You have been travelling Southerly again, but the river now curves south west, toward the Huge mountain that you could see from the tree tops yesterday. It is now your seventh day in this hellish jungle. You set out early, hoping to reach your objective of the dagger symbol today. The large set of rapids greets you at about mid-morning, and you all agree to take a break and bathe in the refreshing water, letting it cascade over your tired bodies. The river seems to be following more of a slope now, possibly the base of the Hellfurnaces. By just after lunch, you reach a set of cliffs. This is the first real sign of the mountain range that you must now be so close to. The cliffs are reasonably small, probably about 50 feet in height, and could easily be climbed. Two rivers fall from the top of the cliffs and join at the bottom in a small pool which feeds the river. Next to the pool, the sunlight flashes on the hilt of a jewelled dagger thrust into the trunk of a dead tree. Michael. Climbing a tree, Torgan looks again to see how far you have all progressed. The smoking mountain that seemed so far away only a few days ago now looms before you. You can see that the foilage around here thins out a little, probably before stopping altogether a short way up the mountain. The mountain probably starts its steep ascent not more than 5 miles away. As the sun is quite low at this time, you decide to make camp here and begin again in the morning. Setting out early, you follow the left river, following the map. The rest of the day is fairly uneventful. Toward the end of the day however, you notice that the jungle thins out dramatically as you reach the base of this huge mountain. The river comes out of a box canyon, which you enter. A gnarled and twisted tree stands alone in this rocky valley. Nearby, a spring bubbles and froths, giving life to the watercourse you have been following. Around you sheer walls rise vertically for hundreds of feet completely blocking your progress. Michael. Then it showed a dagger, and we found a dagger. Next it shows a bush with a mouth. - "The dagger we found, right where it was supposed to be, had been placed there relatively recently, and the mouth symbol scratched on it. "Now, it makes me wonder. If there's a fabulous treasure at the end of this trail, who in their right mind would deliberately (and recently) mark the trail to the treasure? If that party ahead of us was seeking to take the treasure and run away, wouldn't they have taken away the dagger so that other groups couldn't follow them? And if I knew the secret path to fabulous riches, would I go out and mark the trail to my front door? "What I'm wondering is, does anyone think that maybe there's something at the end of this map we're following OTHER than just a big treasure? If the path to our destination is marked, and if people are deliberately maintaining the markings, then whoever is already at the end of the trail must want somebody to follow the trail to them. Who are they, and who are they expecting? Are they crazy thieves who get their jollies from luring dumb treasure hunters into a trap? Or is there something else going on? Assuming that there really is a treasure up ahead, then we could also assume that whoever maintains the trail is uninterested in robbing poor parties of treasure hunters, since they're already rich. There may be something more going on here than appears at a glance. "Were any of the markings on the map more recent than the others? Perhaps some of the landmarks were added in later. "I'm just commenting on this, to give us all something to think about. My current financial situation really gives me no choice but to follow this map to its end, come what may. But I personally don't expect there to be any fiendish traps or nasty guardian monsters along this trail, since obviously it is marked out so that people WILL follow it. Unless the trail is for someone other than us..." "Anyway, to the current situation. If by some chance, that tree is alive and can talk, then I don't think we should aggravate it by shooting it full of arrows. Taufee and Torgan are willing to go in and check out the tree and surrounding area. I'll go in also to protect them from any physical dangers. The rest of you should stand by in case you're needed, and meanwhile watch our backs and the tops of these cliffs to look for spies or potential attackers. If a secret entrance were to be found there, it would certainly be very hard to get into. Junior and Elhmo approach the tree, Junior absently looking at the dagger. As they approach about 10 feet from the tree, a large mouth appears on the trunk and speaks : "To open the southern path, push the slab of grey at its peak." The voice speaks in modern day common tongue with a slight accent from the central Flanaess. The mouth then disappears. For a few moments you all stare at the tree, expecting to see something else happen. Nothing does. Torgan cries out "Ah!" and points to a large, grey, granite boulder on the southern section of the canyon. Moving over to it, you push at the top of it. The boulder pivots, revealing a dark passageway behind it. It goes in perhaps twenty feet before curving out of sight. Michael. It had paths that led up from its base, sort of like this ledge, and the terrible slope of the paths caused many in his band to tire rather quickly. On this path they walked, and they were ambushed by these Massive Giants. Boulders flew down the path, and the Giants seemed as though they stuck to the sides of the mountain. Cornelius lost a good friend that day. He often told me that he learned to be better prepared since that day. And I think we should be cautious, one bad strike on this ledge, and one better hope they grow the wings of eagles, or else they become the food of those creatures of the jungle, or maybe a trophy for some Atem. So I would recommend that we continue using scouts. That way, AT least we might be spared the devastation of an ambush on our entire party. But for right now, which way shall we go?" Thus a character could tell that someone was in front of him, but not who, because everyone pretty much gives off the same heat. Similarly, a character could tell where solid wood or stone is, but not determine if there are any cracks in the stone or sectret entrances. Reading is absolutely impossible. Undead are invisible to infravision, because they give off no heat, and do not exude and form on unnatural cold either. Naturally, a skeleton or a zombie might be spotted, but it would be very hard to do so. Distances, of course, can be determined with infravision, but not detail. BTW, the skeleton and zombie might be spotted because they have solid components to them.] You all decide to go into the cave without a torch, relying on those of you who can see in the dark. The tunnel twists off slightly after about 20 feet and you are plunged into darkness. As the infravision of the members who have it comes into effect, the passage is described to those who do not posess the ability to see in the dark. The passage is about 10 feet wide and 8 feet high. You could fit 2 people side by side, but wouldn't be able to swing a large weapon in combat. The walls and floor are slightly warmer than stone or rock normally is, probably because of the heat from the smoking mountain combined with the tropical climate. Nevertheless, you feel very cool inside the tunnel, a pleasing sensation after the week of jungle that you have just left behind. The passage twists very slightly a few times , but generally keeps a straight course south for about 200 feet. Here you come to a spiral staircase. You mount the case, and begin your ascent. It takes a long time to reach the top of the staircase, but you eventually make it. You must have climbed hundreds of feet. Just as you reach the top, you can see the dusky sky through the exit of the short passage that lies at the top of the staircase. Stepping through, you are taken aback. You now stand on a ledge, about 10 feet wide, that runs along the mountainside at what must be just under 500 feet above the jungle floor! From your vantage point here you can see the river that you followed disappear into the box canyon that you left not long ago. The ledge looks very old, and is well worn by the elements. Boulders litter the path, possibly from past tremors from the mountain. As if to remind you of its presence, the mountain sends out a large rumble. Being on the mountainside, you can feel the power of the mountain shaking your bones. The ledge leads South along the mountain before disappearing around a corner. The sun has just set. Noting the cool breeze, you hope that tonight will be the first night that you may get some decent sleep. Michael. You pass the night with few troubles. Setting off again in the morning, you follow the path again for a few more miles. This ledge is obviously very old and possibly unused for quite some time, as the rocks that have fallen over the years are strewn over the path. Picking your way over them, you continue to follow the steady path south along the mountain face, noting that you are gradually coming lower and lower. Your vision ahead is obscured by a large outcrop but as you round the corner, four brightly painted warriors come into view. All hold spears and one has an ivory horn. His nose and face stretch and sharpen into a vicious looking beak. His eyes get big and round and begin to offset to either side of his head like a true eagle. His arms elongate and flatten out into large wings. Feathers sprout all over his body. After about a minute the transformation is complete. The intelligence of Junior can be seen behind the eagle eyes. Looking to the others to verify that all are ready. He hop-walks to the edge. Leaning out of the edge, the eagle (Junior) takes a powerful leap off and soars away from the mountains edge away from where the painted warriors are. To: All That Glitters -- Brevan , Elhmo , Junior , Michael Wright , Prometheus , Taufee , Te-rasti , Torgan , Watcher Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: OR Prometheus and Brevan stand side by side, waiting for the other members of the group to put a less violent end to the problem facing you in the form of this warrior. The warrior releases the horn from his hand as the illusionary spider manages to crawl out onto his hand. The horn swings loosely from the strap on his shoulder. Elhmos shouts from behind him make him spin around, looking for the enemy. This gives Te-rasti time to move up next to the warrior and make an attempt to get the horn. The dagger slices easily through the strap and the horn is now safely in the possesion of Te-rasti. He throws it back behind Prometheus and Brevan, where Torgan picks it up. Not knowing what to do, the warrior turns to run. He accidently bumps into Elhmo, who is standing in his path. Elhmo is now visible. You have only a few seconds to work out what to do, before the warrior escapes!
