Status: OR It has been a long trek from civilization to find yourselves down here in the depths of the Amedio jungle. All of you, for different reasons, have found yourselves drawn to this teeming jungle here in the tropical southern part of the Flanaess. Now drawn together by some fragments of a map found in the unforgiving jungle, near the head-hunting Atem's lands, you look an unlikely band. Two elves and a half-breed elf, a couple of humans, a gnome and a halfling, a stranger combination of companions would be hard to find indeed. Yet companions you are, drawn together by the riches promised at the end of the map you now hold in your hands. It was little trouble to find the town of Port Elizabeth on the coast of Jerlea bay and the Utdoo river gave you quick passage to this small town of Ketts' rapids. The river at Kett's rapids becomes too shallow for boats however, and you are now forced to continue your trek on foot. On both sides of the river lush vegetation stretches skywards forming an arch over the water and giving a green tinge to the sunlight. In places the greenery is broken by brilliant spashes of color from large flowers and brightly colored birds. But all is not as idyllic as it first seems; soon the hot sticky air sends rivers of sweat down your backs, faces and arms. Wiping it from your eyes, you realise that this jungle crossing is not going to be easy. Already swarms of mosquitos are gathering and buzzing around you. You are forced to chop your way through the vegetation to make any progress through the jungle, even at the river side. The jungle looks even more daunting further in from the river, thicker than seems possible. {Note : I will be giving you a few turns like this that don't have any definite decision making. You are encouraged in this time to strike up conversation, ask further questions of me about the surroundings, or do whatever you like. We'll be in the thick of it soon enough :-) } Michael. The parchment is in very good condition. Considering the weather that it has been exposed to here in the jungle, it can't be more than a few years old. Still, the elements have taken their toll on the map, and only a few sections of it remain. The following descriptions detail the sections that remain quite legible. Any writing on the map is in the common language. The first section is very small. It is the top left corner of the map and has the name "Port Elizab..." on it. The second section begins the map. It had the name "...ts...apids", which you take to be the town of Kett's Rapids. The Utdoo river is then shown leading down South into the jungle. A branch of the river is shown, followed by a picture of a feather. A few more river branches, then some squiggle in the river course (possibly rapids). The next branch shows a very large squiggle. (possibly falls). At this branch is a picture of a knife or a dagger. Mountains come up at this point. After this, a picture of a bush and a mouth is followed by an arrow that leads through the mountain to a symbol that looks like a temple. After the picture of the temple, a drawing of flat land follows into some more mountains. The next section shows a path, mountains and a handshake. The last section of map is quite strange. It depicts some stairs leading from under the ground to emerge from the western side of a string of mountains. The mountain range is shown, but the most unusual picture on this piece is that of a huge, thin mountain and a drawing of treasure underneath it. Michael. I had almost forgotten about snakes and things. The could also be spiders, hornets, other big and nasty bugs, or even apes, monkeys, etc. Te-rasti makes a thorough search of the tree before sitting down against it. He doesn't want red ants or anything else getting a midmorning snack. He sits down to contemplate the various meanings of the symbols on the map and wonders what the feather symbol in particular might mean. He tries to come up with a story or pattern to give the symbols meaning. For Example: The person making the map came to this spot and had found a giant bird nesting in a distinct tree. The dagger means he met natives or had to fight something. The big skinny mountain is probably the tallest peak in the range at that point which we leave the jungle. The symbol for a big pile of treasure is exactly what it means (I hope). I just hope that the temple symbol isn't occupied by too many mean, nasty, things: head-hunting natives, viscious jungle creatures, etc. Well, we've been sitting here long enough, haven't we? Let's get going. I don't like the humidity any more than the rest of this group and I want to find out what that feather means for sure. It could give us a clue about the thinking of the map maker, so we might be able to figure out the rest of the symbols and be prepared for things ahead of time. I *really* don't like surprises and I would hope that the rest of you agree. Te-rasti. I just sent this message to a group that I'm a player in. Fortunately the DM sent it back to me. Shoot me if it happens again. [Administration : I've got replies from everyone except Prometheus and Taufee. I know that one of you is on holiday on the moment. If the other has posted, then please check your mailing list and include me :-) The map that Junior (it was you wasn't it?) made was quite good and only needed a couple of small corrections. The corrected ASCII map will be posted to you tonight (I hope)] Onward you trek into the Jungle, taking more and more rests as the day wears on. The heat and humidity are taking their toll already, and you find that you must constantly dip your waterskins into the Utdoo just to keep from dehydrating. As you look around you, you take a closer look at your companions. You only hope that they will be able to see you to the end of this trek. Prometheus is a Grey Elf of medium height. His ice blue eyes and Stone Silver hair seem out of place in this jungle. His skin seems to be a little to fair for the climate, however the jungle has provided a very effective screen, preventing his chances of burning. Te-rasti is probably the closest in appearence to Prometheus, being an Elf as well, albeit a High Elf. He is tall for an Elf, a goodly height even for a human, easily over 6 feet tall. Unlike Prometheus, he carries no armor. This has helped immensly in the trek through the jungle. Taufee, the only Female in your group, is a youngish looking Half elven Priestess of Norebo, if her robes are anything to go by. Still, the evidence of her spell components, found on Prometheus and Te-rasti too, marks her as one of magical abilities too. Again, she wears no armor, but is clothed by Leather pants and a vest. Brevan is taking the journey well, despite the problems of carrying his chain mail through this jungle while trying to hack his way along the river. Perhaps he is more used to weather of this sort, coming from slightly closer to the jungle than most of you. His brown hair is still soaked with sweat though, and his blue eyes seem tired. If Brevan seems to be acclimatised to this type of weather, then Torgan certainly does not. With white-blond hair and light blue eyes along with his pale skin and accent, one could not possibly be ignorant of his origin. The northern Barbarians have a distinctive accent, one which Torgan posesses. For a man who sees snow most of the year, his trek must surely be the hardest of the lot. Falling behind ar the little folk, Elhmo and Junior. Their legs not able to carry them as fast as these taller people, they have been content to follow the path that the machette has cut for them. Elhmo seems to be just above 3 feet tall, not an unusual height for a gnome. With him is his assorted spell casting paraphenalia, but strangely, he wears armor too. Still, the leather has not seen more sweat pour out of a little body since it was made, and it weighs heavily on him. Junior seems to be the only one of you who is not particularly disturbed by the weather. On his own advice, he has coated his bare skin with mud to help keep the mosquitos away as well as to reduce the water lost through his skin. He should be used to these conditions though, after all, he has worked in other areas of this vast jungle before. He wears his medallion of Boccob proudly, and is beginning to get on your nerves a little with his chatter... Just as the sun is setting, you find a clearing in which to set up a camp. Judging by the predictions made by Junior and your own estimates, you can't have travelled more than 10 miles today. The river has still not shown any sign of changing from it's southward course, and the fork in the river has not been seen yet. As it begins to darken further, you can hear the sounds of the nocturnal animals, hunters and prey, begin to sound through the jungle just out of sight... Michael. Question re: Keolands - Under exports or resources or whatever in the information you sent, there was a mention of gemstones (III). What is the likelihood that Brevan's brother's lands might be good for mining gemstones? What sort of knowledge about this subject might Brevan have - he thinks some gems are common, and there may be some on his family's lands, or he never gave it a second thought? I'm considering, after the adventure, having Brevan invite Elhmo return home with him to prospect the lands, assuming 1) Elhmo demonstrates authoritative knowledge on the subject, and 2) Brevan can tolerate Elhmo's company. -Vince/Brevan From gt6441c@prism.gatech.edu Wed Mar 24 21:44:58 1993 Received: by hydra.gatech.edu (5.67a/3.1) id AA12643; Wed, 24 Mar 1993 15:44:50 -0500 Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1993 15:44:50 -0500 From: gt6441c@prism.gatech.edu (Jon Edwards ) Message-Id: <199303242044.AA12643@prism.gatech.edu> To: IO01108@MAINE.maine.edu, alex, gt6441c@prism.gatech.edu, jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com, le_gued@euterpe.cert.fr, sinari@vinkku.hut.fi, thedm@leland.Stanford.EDU, vjg@cblph.att.com, wright@latcs1.lat.oz.au Subject: Elhmo: blah blah blah Status: OR "Gnomes Bones!! He then slips it into his tent and sets up for a good night sleep. "Could someone please wake me around Midnight for my snack. So, how are you this morning ? Junior, did you hear Boccob this night ? I think he was howling at the moon... No ? Get's up Ehlmo, we go, come on ! Oh, I have an idea... I'll climb up to this big tree to see what I can see... As you climb one of the larger trees, you suddenly find yourself above the carpe t of greenery that you have been living in. The bright light hurts your eyes at first, but as you get used to it you take in a gasp of wonder. You can see for m iles here. To the North you can see the slightly less dense jungle that Kett's r apids is situated in and off in the far distance to the West is a range of Mount ains. These must be the famous Hellfurnaces... The distance seems staggering, so it must be the Mountains great height that makes it possible for you to see any thing of them from here. Some of them are smoking. It looks as if your journey i s going to take a while before you reach those Mountains! To the South all you can see is the Green forest. Birds occasionaly fly above th e canopy and soar in the clear skies. They aren't anything like you've seen bef ore. Most of them are very brighly colored and have fantastic plumage. Some rese mble parrots, some are also like Eagles, yet less tough, if you know what I mean . There seems to be no end to the variety of birds in the air. You feel something against your leg. Something is crawling up your leg! It is about 4 inches in diameter, and looks a bit like the spiders that you have seen elsewhere. It is a lot bigger than you thought spiders could get though. I don't move !!!! Your eyes of the eagle are at a sufficient distance to work on the beast, whose every detail you can see clearly. Notable is the abscence of poison sacs. But th ose nippers look very mean! You vaguely remember something Junior said about bir d eating spiders. Birds ??? I look up Nothing there at the moment. I think that this spider had better be very patient if it's going to catch something. Hopefully he won't try for a finger or two!! Well... can I catch it ? It's facing toward you, so if you want to try to grab it, you'll need to move yo ur arm around behind so it doesn't get in the path of the fangs. If you make a g rab at it just straight, you'll get bitten. It may not be venemous, but then it may be. The spider eventually crawls over your chest and onto a nearby branch, o bviously thinking that you're too much trouble. Of course... who will bother the mighty Torgan...? A quick movement catches your eye and you see that the spider is gone. In in its place is the head of what looks to be a large snake. It's jaw is distended. Now you know where the spider went... How big is the snake ? You can't tell clearly by the way it's coiled around the branches, but it is eas ily 10 feet long. At the moment it is digesting its meal. But it is still eying you. It is moving slowly toward you. It brushes your chest. You can feel it agai nst your back now. You can feel it against your chest again. It is curling aroun d you. It hasn't got a grip yet though. Damn !!!!... I try to escape... You have got your dagger... Letting go of the branches, you let gravity take its course. The lower branches soften your fall, so you are not injured by your rap id descent, but you are a little sore from the slap of the branches of the tree against you on the way down. The snake is nowhere to be seen. The others comment on your skin seeming whiter than usual... Taufee checks to see if you are allri ght. Thanks, thanks Taufee... You know, hard is the fate of heroes... Hey, I know what is first creature we've met : a spider, and then a snake... Come on... Birds are waiting for us... Status: OR By the time you have finished building the raft it looks quite impressive. You know that it is going to be ha hard slog _upriver_ (yes, you are walking upriver) but decide to try out the raft. Now you know why you haven't seen any more outposts of civilization since Kett's rapids. The river is now too shallow and fast moving to support any type of watercraft. The raft is already scraping against small rocks on the river bed. Still, some good news does come out of this. Firstly, the river will be too fast moving to contain piranha, and it will be shallow enough for even Elhmo and Junior to ford easily (though they may need some help in keeping their equipment dry). A couple of hours travelling pass before you reach the first branch in the river. The map says to take the right branch, so with little argument you do. The temperature of yesterday has returned along with the humidity and your clothes are all completely drenched with sweat. There isn't much chance of making you cold at night though, since the temperature still stays at an uncomfortable level throughout. With Juniors help, you manage to gather up some berries that are natural insect repellants. They don't smell very nice, but that is a minor concern to you now compared to these mosquitos that could infect you with malaria or any other type of horrible tropical disease at any bite. You all take a long lunch break, taking the opportunity to rest and refresh yourselves in the river. It's water is cool and soothing, and it is with some reluctance that you continue your trek through the Amedio. By mid afternoor, the river begins to curve around to the west. You reach some rapids. White water foams over sharp rocks in the river. On both sides of the rapids, skulls hang amongst brightly colored feathers. This must be the marking symbols for the Atem. You are now in headhunter territory. Michael. But right now, I can only help one person. The spell takes a little while to cast, so I don't want to do it during combat. Please let me know ahead of time. I suppose that we don't have much choise now but to keep going and hope the Atem are off playing in another part of the jungle. One problem though, civilizations tend to be located around a source of water. This river is definitely a source of water. I thought I'd just bring that up for our "fearless" leader, Junior. You come to another split in the river and cross without much incident. Toward mid morning of your fifth day in this humid hell, Junior stops and says quietly, "There is danger just up ahead". You all have a little time to prepare yourselves (nock arrows to bows, draw weapons etc) before you catch a glimpse of movement ahead of you. The jungle parts to reveal about 8 or 9 natives. They are carrying a dead tiger on a pole. The group is lead by a woman, who seems to be older than the other members of this group. Upon seeing you, she says to the other natives : "Ak! Allu makhli tekh!" The warriors ready their spears and prepare to attack... (There are 8 warriors and the woman. If you wish to engage a particular warrior, then name him by using warrior1 warrior2 etc. If you wish, you can just engage whichever one comes toward you, and I'll tell you which number he is. This will just help work out who is attacking who. After this combat ends (hopefully you'll all be alive) I'd like as much feedback as possible about the methods used in the running of the combat. I'm seeing this first encounter as a chance to iron out the kinks in the communication system that we may use for combat. If you want, you can mail everyone with your intentions (eg, "my character will cast a magic missile") so that the players know, even if the characters don't. You can keep your moves secret through the combat, but this will be noticable by the fact that the other players won't hear what you are planning. Either way, I'll leave it up to you this combat and we'll have the chance to discuss the outcome after. I'd also like to hear Alex's comments, being a third party as it were.) Michael. At this point, Te-rasti has found an opportunity to fire his magic missile, which hits one of the natives, scorcing his badly (2 hit points). This warrior was the one harassing Prometheus, so now Prometheus only has to worry about the swarm of bees that are now surrounding him. Junior lets loose with his sling, but is unsucessful in his attempt to hit one of the warriors. The last warrior to strike tries to hit Brevan, but slashes at thin air. Status: OR The warriors have taken heavy losses, but are determined to guard their lands, like they have been trained to do all of their lives. Te-rasti strikes first, hitting the old woman with her second magic missile. The small ball of energy hits the woman square in the chest, and ruins her concentration for the spell she was obviously preparing (5 points damage). She still stands though. Torgan rushes through the fallen warriors, his short sword aimed at the woman too. She is still stunned by the wound, and Torgan manages to slice her badly with the blade (2 points). The Tiger that Taufee summoned moves in to one of the warriors. He seems to notice something strange about it though, the fact that it is making no sound, and then acts as if it is not there! He turns his attention to Taufee and makes his way over to her. Meanwhile, Brevan has engaged one of the warriors, obviously no match for Brevans skill. Brevan's blade bites deeply, and the warrior falls to the ground in a pool of his own blood (5 points damage). The same warrior was unfortunate enough to miss Brevan on his death blow, and Brevan leaves the encounter unscathed. Junior has moved over to the warrior that was hit by Te-rasti's first magic missile followed by one of Brevan's arrows and bandages his wounds. The flow of blood out of his limp body slows down considerably. At the same time, Prometheus jumps a clear 20 feet to bring his sword down on the woman as he lands. The hit is dead on, and the blade of his right longsword lands heavily on the woman (9 points !). Amazingly, she still stands. The warrior that Te-rasti set the tiger onto is now at her side and jabs at [Correction : the warrior that Taufee set the tiger onto. Sorry!] her with his spear. The tip of the spear digs into her side and blood covers the end of it (Taufee takes 2 damage). Hearing a screech in the air, the warrior turns around to see the eagle bearing down upon his. The eagles talons slash savagely into the warrior and he falls to the ground. Strangely enough, no wounds are visible on him... Brevan engages the last warrior again with his longsword. The warrior is hit very heavily (9 points) and falls. Prometheus makes another attempt at the woman with his left hand longsword. His blade slices blindly through the air, missing the woman. With all of her warrior lying on the ground unconcious, the woman turns and tries to run. Promethues and Torgan are next to her and try to hit her as she flees. Both hit her, and she falls (Torgan 6 damage, Prometheus 7). Blood flows freely from her many wounds and she looks to be near the verge of death. You have 4 sleeping warriors, 1 bandaged, 2 bleeding freely, and 1 lying unharmed on the ground. The woman is also unconcious. All eight warriors make no move or stirr. (The sleeping warriors are sperate from the other 4 I just detailed. Sorry if that sounds confusing.) Taufee has a spear wound in her side. The Tiger disappears, but the eagle is still overhead, though not doing anything in particular. A little victory drink anyone? So long as Michael keeps combat and other similiar situations this entertaining, I think it will work just Fine. ############# ## ## ######### ######### ### ### ### ## ## ## ## # ### ### ### ## ## ## ## # #### #### ### ########## ######### ## # ### # # ### ### ## ## ## ## # ### ### ### ### ## ## ## ## # ### ### ### ### ## ## ######### ######### ### ### ### Master of His Own Universe!!!! -- Marcus M. The woman, the 3 warriors felled and the one attacked by the eagle are still lying still, though they are breathing. The warriors, realising that they are tied up, stay relatively quiet, muttering amongst themselves. It is evident from their tracks that the warriors came from the North toward the river. They were travelling in a relatively straight path to the South/South West. The Tiger that they were carrying is cold, but the wounds on its underside (the pelt is undamaged on top) are still dripping. It has probably been dead for about a day. The smell coming from the tiger is quite noticeable, given the heat and humidity of the jungle. None of the warriors are carrying anything of worth, save for their spears and necklaces. The necklaces are simple in design, and would probably be worth not much more than the stones that are hung on them (adding up to probably 5 - 10 g.p. each) Some questions posed by your group to the warriors shows that the Atem warriors here have absolutely no knowledge of the common tongue. She will probably not regain conciousness for a few days. Taufee, realising the dangers of infection in the jungle, cures herself of her wound. The gash in her side closes up, leaving a red mark where the spear entered. After doing this, she casts a spell to try to communicate with the natives. "umma baadu ka .... are they doing in our territory? I wonder if Ka-dut sent us out with Mara to find these intruders? Are they going to kill us?" The natives calm down a little after Prometheus offers a drink to each of them. Their confusion is still clear though. Obviously they have never been in a situation like this before. Junior and Torgan both confirm that the natives have no knowledge of Suloise. However on speaking the tongue, Taufee relays the following comment : "Some of them speak the secret tongue of Ka-dut and the wise women! Are these people the gods? No of course not, that one was wounded, see? If they were the gods, they'd be able to speak to us. Maybe they do not wish to speak to us? They are trying, see? They are a threat. We should try to get back to the tribe!" Meanwhile, both Torgan and Elhmo climb trees to have a look at the distance to the Mountains. You have travelled quite far these past few days, and the jagged peaks loom out at you not further than 5 miles away. However, the Utdoo river seems to be winding South to run parallel to the mountains, so the trek may still be a while longer. To the South West, one of the mountains issues forth a constant stream of smoke. Te-rasti looks carefully around the jungle floor, but doesn't seem to find anything of particular importance. Upon looking at the tiger's wounds again, you can tell that these wounds were made by spear thrusts, obviously from this hunting party. The warriors have quietened down again, and are staring at you, waiting for your move... Michael. The reason I stated I wasn't going to assume what I read is what Taufee says is because Junior will not repeat exactly what he hears. I don't mind anyone seeing what is truly said, but I want everyone to role-play off of what is truly said by the other characters. You can only memorise spells during the day if you have a spare slot for them. If you cast a spell, you may not memorise for that spell slot until the next day. You may, however, opt to leave a couple of slots 'unmemorised' and then memorise spells for them during the day. For example, Karrak Djard can cast 3 1st level spells and 1 2nd level spell per day. He chooses to memorise 1 2nd level spell and 2 1st level spell. During the course of the day he uses up all of his memorised spells. He can then spend 10 minutes to memorise 1 more 1st level spell. He may not memorise any other spells though, because this would grant his the ability to cast more than 3 1st level spells and 1 2nd level spell per day. A spell not cast during the day remains memorised, although it can be discarded (I use a sort of dummy casting system here, where the spell is cast without effects or side effects. Thus a mage wishing to get rid of a wish that is memorised doesn't have to age 5 years to do so). Any questions, please mail me and I will explain this more carefully] Michael. This post is only being sent out to those of you who are capable of understanding Ancient Suloise at the moment. I'm sure that Brevan, Prometheus and Te-rasti will want to hear from you very soon. As 2 of you don't know pure Ancient Suloise, I will paraphrase most of this conversation. Junior moves back next to the woman and begins to speak. "What is your name?" "My name is Mara. I am the wise woman leading this hunting party back to our village. We have just been victorious in bringing down the mighty jungle cat." Mara comes from a village that is located about 2 days South West of here, at the foot of a mountain called "Big smoking rock". None of the villagers have ever climbed the mountain, as it is a sacred and holy place where the gods live. When asked if it has ever erupted, she says that it has not, but the earth has shaken before when the smoke was very thick. The gods were obviously angry, and sacrifices were needed. The tiger is a sacrifice to appease the smoking rock. She asks why you are trespassing on Atem land. It doesn't seem as if 'just passing through' is a concept known to the Atem. She is eventually convinced that you are not here to destroy the village. After all, you brought her back from the edge of death, as she does to all of the brave warriors. She is very pleased to see that none of the warriors are dead. When asked about Ka-dut, she replies that he is the Chieftan of her village. He rules and is helped by all of the 'wise women', of which she is one. The village numbers over 100 warriors. When asked if anyone has passed through here before, she says that there were some people 'like you, with white skin like devils' that came through some time ago. There is no calendar to mark the passage of time in Atem society, so she couldn't say how long ago it was. They fought, and the Atem managed to take some of their weapons and lives, but at a heavy loss. 'Some of them escaped, but Attla-Mu would have taken care of them'. When asked about Attla-Mu, she shuts up and will not say anything more about the matter. She agrees that if she and the warriors are released, that they will not attempt to harass your party any further. It is clear to you, even though she does not wish it to be, that this is because she knows who the victor in the next fight would be. Of course, she makes no guarantee about not telling any other Atem. [Could someone please mail this to Alex the watcher? I forgot to include him in the sendout line. Thankyou] Michael. The scouting party was fairly easy to defeat, but a whole village would be almost impossible due to the numbers. If the rest of the party wants to go to the village, then I'll go too. I just think we need to decide which way is the safest for us, not the way that *could* get us a lot of friendly natives. What does everybody think we could do? We have a few options available to us. 1. We go with them to the village. When we arrive they could be friendly or they could attack. We can't be sure which. 2. We let them go and leave, assuming they won't follow us. or 3. We let them go and get moving as a precaution incase they aren't as friendly as they appeaar to be. After all, they are head- hunters. No, I think that allowing them to have their freedom and allowing them to return to their home alone would be the best, both for our well being as well as theirs. I am not sure about the customs of their land, but I do recall stories about another bloodthirsty people, a people who once were as noble and rightous as my own, a people who fell from the Grace of Good........ The Drow. The stories I could spin would easily test the limits of the night, so it is best said in this short but frank way. Those who thirst for the kill and desire the destruction of others, and worship a foul god, whether that god be Spider- Demon or FireSpit, often have no pity for those pour souls who are weak AND beaten. Let us offer these natives a protected nights sleep, one in which we are expecting the worse, and have a strong guard, and then we will allow them to leave our camp. We have shown them hospitality and courteousness, and if they so desire to still wage war on us, then may the Gods rest their backs on their Golden Thrones, and may their servants pour them some wine, for there will be quite a sight if I must raise my swords and my ire to vanquish them with the deftness of my slice. I have compassion for these pour individuals who we obviously caught by surprise, but I will have little for their foul brothers if they try and seek our blood." She is very tight lipped about Attlah-Mu, saying nothing more about the matter other than 'We do not speak of Attlah-Mu to outsiders, I have already said too much'. Of the other white people, they passed through here a while ago (you have no idea how long 'a while' is) and the tribe attacked them. Some of their 'treasures' remain with the Atem. When asked to provide a token to claim peace with any other hunting parties, Mara laughs. 'No outsiders can claim peace when they are on our land. To invade tribal lands is to challenge us for control of them! We will not attack you again, but I say nothing for any others of my tribe!' As you settle down for the nights meal, Mara decides to leave along with her warriors. 'We will return to our village. We have no wish to stay in the company of enemies.' Apparently war features very prominently in the Atem psyche. Brevan and Torgan eat together, speaking once more of Torgans sister. They decide to keep each other company on the first watch of the evening. Everyone else settles down to another fitful sleep in the stifling humidity of the Amedio jungle. Already you are all homesick, wishing that you could perhaps be blessed with just one cool breeze through the jungle. That is not to be. Morning breaks and the warriors are nowhere to be seen. You all pack up the remains of the camp and resume your trek. Late afternoon sees you reach a fork in the river, which you follow according to the map. By all accounts, the dagger symbol should be arrived after the next set of rapids, possibly the next day. You have been travelling Southerly again, but the river now curves south west, toward the Huge mountain that you could see from the tree tops yesterday. It is now your seventh day in this hellish jungle. You set out early, hoping to reach your objective of the dagger symbol today. The large set of rapids greets you at about mid-morning, and you all agree to take a break and bathe in the refreshing water, letting it cascade over your tired bodies. The river seems to be following more of a slope now, possibly the base of the Hellfurnaces. By just after lunch, you reach a set of cliffs. This is the first real sign of the mountain range that you must now be so close to. The cliffs are reasonably small, probably about 50 feet in height, and could easily be climbed. Two rivers fall from the top of the cliffs and join at the bottom in a small pool which feeds the river. Next to the pool, the sunlight flashes on the hilt of a jewelled dagger thrust into the trunk of a dead tree. Michael.
